WHAT IS AN eBOOK?

An eBook is an electronic or digital version of a printed book. eBooks can be read on computers, eReading devices (such as the Kobo eReader) or on your smartphone.

WHAT FILE FORMATS ARE eBOOKS AVAILABLE IN?

eBooks come in a variety of formats, though most commonly they are found as PDFs or as ePubs. An ePub (electronic publication) is an eBook standard that allows for flexibility when displaying text on different devices or hardware, and has been embraced by many technology and publishing companies, including Sony, Google, Adobe, Random House, Harper Collins and more.

Q. Do I need an eReader in order to read eBooks?

A. No, an eReader device (like the Kobo eReader) probably provides the best eReading experience, but you can also read eBooks from Kobo on select tablets and smartphones (see the current list of supported phones here www.kobobooks.com/smartphones, your computer, and many other eReader devices, such as the Sony Reader™. There are, however, many benefits to the Kobo eReader, such as the book-like reading experience using E Ink technology on a 6-inch screen. The Kobo eReader is easy to use, slim and lightweight with 1GB of built-in storage that can store up to 1000 titles.

Q. Can I find an eBook version of any book that's available?

A. Most books that are available in traditional formats are also available as eBooks. Kobo carries over 2 million titles and this list continues to grow. Kobo continues to work with publishers to make physical books available in eBook.

Q. Can I read eBooks purchased from Kobo on the Sony Reader™?

A. Yes, you can read your Kobo eBooks on the Sony Reader™. See instructions here www.kobobooks.com/faq#9 on how to do so.

Q. Do you sell electronic subscriptions to magazines and newspapers?

A. Subscriptions will be available for some magazines and newspapers from Kobo in May 2010.

Q. Can I share my eBooks with others?

A. No, due to publisher copyright constraints, you cannot currently share your Kobo eBook purchases with others. Kobo is working with publishers on lending and family access, so it will hopefully be available in the future.

Q. Can I access and read an eBook I purchased on more than one reading device?

A. Yes, all of your eBook purchases can be downloaded on your Kobo eReader, on select smartphones where you have already downloaded a Kobo Application, and your computer using the Kobo Desktop Application. Kobo lets you enjoy reading your eBook with the device that is most convenient for you at the moment.

Q. Is the Kobo eReader enabled with wi-fi or 3G?

A. No, the Kobo eReader is not connected to the Internet. However you can use Bluetooth® technology to wirelessly sync your Kobo eReader with your Blackberry® smartphone, using the Kobo Application for Blackberry® smartphones. You cannot shop for eBooks directly from your Kobo eReader. eBook shopping is done by visiting kobobooks.com, or the Kobo store that is accessible through the Kobo Desktop Application or the various Kobo smartphone applications, including the Kobo Application for Blackberry® smartphones.

Q. What do you mean by "sync wirelessly using Bluetooth® technology"?

A. You need to enable the Bluetooth® technology on your Blackberry® smartphone to use this feature. Bluetooth® technology allows your electronic devices to wirelessly communicate with each other over short distances. Then, using the Kobo Application for Blackberry® smartphones, you first download the eBook to your Blackberry® smartphone, and then sync it with your Kobo eReader using Bluetooth® technology.

Q. Will the Kobo eReader bookmark where I left off reading?

A. Yes, the eReader will always keep track of where you left off. Additionally, if your eReader device is synced to your Kobo Desktop Application during or after bookmarking, the bookmark will transfer to other devices (like your Blackberry® smartphone or iPhone mobile digital device) where you have installed a Kobo Application.

Q. What controls are there on the Kobo eReader display?

A. You can change the font you read, by choosing from 5 font sizes and 2 font styles (serif and sans serif). You can also choose your library view to sort by book cover or title and author. For PDF files, you have five options for magnification.

Q. Are the 100 free eBooks preloaded and can I delete them if I do not want them?

A. Yes, the 100 free eBooks are loaded onto your device at the factory. You currently cannot delete the preloaded books, though Kobo will be adding that feature in the future.

Q. Can I download eBooks from any eBook provider onto my Kobo eReader?

A. As long as the eBook is in a supported format (ePub or PDF), and from an open platform provider, you will be able to download or transfer the eBook onto your Kobo eReader.

Q. Will I be able to use Indigo Gift Cards on Kobo eBook purchases?

A. Gift cards can now be redeeemd on Kobo.com for eBooks.

Q. Can I use my Indigo account and get my irewards discount on Kobo eBook purchases?

A. Since Kobo is a separate company; you will need to create a new account with Kobo to purchase eBooks, magazines and newspaper subscriptions—therefore, you will not be able to use your Indigo online shopping account or get your Indigo irewards membership discount.

Q. What is the Kobo Desktop Application?

A. The Kobo Desktop Application is software you install onto your PC or Mac computer, which allows you to manage your eBook library, shop for eBooks, transfer eBooks to your eReader, and read your eBooks on your computer. You can install the Kobo Desktop Application software when you first setup your eReader, or you can just download it from the Kobobooks.com. The Kobo Desktop Application will be available May 2010.

Q. Does the Kobo eReader come with a Warranty?

A. Yes, the Kobo eReader comes with a 1-year Factory Defect Warranty.

Q. Does the eReader come in any other colours?

A. For now the eReader is available in the colour porcelain. In the near future it will also be available in black.

Q. How do I charge the Kobo eReader battery?

A. Plugging your Kobo eReader into your computer (with the included USB cord) will charge the battery; no separate charger is required.
