If there is ever an energy shortage on par with the one in the
mid-'70s, it would behoove consumers to figure out how to harness
what Dee Dee Bridgewater puts out. In this live set from Oakland's
classy Yoshi's, one can't help but wonder if there's something that
this immensely talented lady can't do. Whether it is interpreting
lyrics of choice standards such as "Cherokee," "Stairway to the
Stars" or "Love for Sale," sounding like Ella (or a trombone!), or
doing a totally convincing version of James Brown's "Get Up I Feel
Like Being a Sex Machine," Ms. Bridgewater is both electric and in
charge. The precision with which the tasteful arrangements are
executed is nearly frightening--these are not pick-up musicians.
Listen to the groove-tambourine intro to "Slow Boat to China," the
scat-trombone stylings on "Stairway to the Stars," and the
breathtaking tempo of "What a Little Moonlight Can Do"--LIVE AT
YOSHI'S is full of surprises like these and more.
