Arctic Rose

Artist: Susan Aglukark

April 19, 1994 | Compact Disc

Personnel: Terry Tufts (vocals, acoustic guitar); Al Bragg (steel guitar); Don Reid (violin); Randall Prescott (harmonica); Tom Szczesniak (accordion); Steve O'Connor (keyboards); Barry Keane (drums).
Recording information: Inception Sound; Lakeside Studio.
Arranger: Susan Aglukark.
This is Susan Aglukark's first true solo album. Her real debut was in the guise of an independent cassette which was followed by a Christmas album, but this album shows off her songwriting abilities. Aglukark had been playing several years prior to this and had released a number of independent tapes and singles. For this release, producers Randell Prescott, Chad Irschick, and Jon Park-Wheeler allow her to do what she does best and they show great restraint with the production. Aglukark has very pleasant melodies and an almost angelic voice. The instrumentation is kept to a minimum here, but the arrangements allow for easy listening. The music is an interesting mix of folk/country/easy listening, but it works. The songs themselves have a tinge of sadness, exposing the plight of the Native Canadian and their ongoing struggles. But the songs are not done out anger, but out of loss. "Mama's Prayers" is an excellent example of this sentiment, without getting maudlin. It is a heartwrenching song. This is a beautiful album, that many would find enjoyable. Just remember, under those beautiful melodies are some very strong, serious statements. ~ Aaron Badgley
