Editorial Notes
Byron Arnold was a music professor at the University of Alabama
who, over a period of three years in the 1940s, went out in the
field to "catch" the songs, lullabies, games, and field chants of
the everyday folks of Alabama. He eventually published articles and
books about the experience, and released some of the music on
78-rpm discs.
This 2007 CD culls almost 50 of those recordings, particularly the
kid-friendly ones, and comes with a 72-page booklet with lyrics and
information. In an era when children's music can sound prepackaged,
precocious, and soulless, this collection is a breath of fresh air.
