Editorial Notes
All pop-punk bands are influenced by the Beach Boys in some distant way, but Canada's Marianas Trench are more upfront about their musical debt. MASTERPIECE THEATRE, the band's second album, is full of a capella harmonizing and songcraft that, if it doesn't scrape Brian Wilson levels of obsessiveness, reveal a diligent, symphonic aesthetic. The title track, veering from lone vocals to strings to scrappy stop-and-start punk, is itself a mini-suite, and it reappears twice throughout the course of the record. The rest of the album is equally diverse; "Beside You" flirts with Afropop, while "Good to You" is a touching duet between Josh Ramsay and guest Kate Voegele.
