Heavier and more uncertain than their near perfect, darkly optimistic 2004 debut, the album aimed for the nosebleed section and left a red mess. Having already fled the cold comforts of suburbia on Funeral and suffered beneath the weight of the world on Neon Bible, it seems fitting that a band once so consumed with spiritual and social middle-class fury, should find peace "under the overpass in the parking lot." If nostalgia is just pain recalled, repaired, and resold, then The Suburbs is its sales manual. Inspired by brothers Win and William Butler's suburban Houston, TX upbringing, the 16-track record plays out like a long lost summer weekend, with the jaunty but melancholy Kinks/Bowie-esque title cut serving as its bookends. Meticulously paced and conservatively grand, fans looking for the instant gratification of past anthems like "Wake Up" or "Intervention" will find themselves reluctantly defending The Suburbs upon first listen, but anyone who remembers excitedly jumping into a friend's car on a sleepy Friday night armed with heartache, hope, and no agenda knows that patience is key. Multiple spins reveal a work that's as triumphant and soul-slamming as it is sentimental and mature. At its most spirited, like on "Empty Room," "Rococo," "City with No Children," "Half Light II (No Celebration)," "We Used to Wait," and the glorious R‚gine Chassagne-led "Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains)," the latter of which threatens to break into Blondie's "Heart of Glass" at any moment, Arcade Fire makes the suburbs feel positively electric. Quieter moments reveal a changing of the guard, as Win trades in the Springsteen-isms of Neon Bible for Neil Young on "Wasted Hours," and the ornate rage of Funeral for the simplicity of a line like "Let's go for a drive and see the town tonight/There's nothing do, but I don't mind when I'm with you," from album highlight "Suburban War." The Suburbs feels like Richard Linklater's Dazed & Confused for the Y generation. It's serious without being preachy, cynical without dissolving into apathy, and whimsical enough to keep both sentiments in line, and of all of their records, it may be the one that ages so well. ~ James Christopher Monger See Details

Hoping to instill some pride back to the Toronto hometown he feels is unfairly maligned, Blue Rodeo frontman Jim Cuddy's third solo album, Skyscraper Soul, is a love letter to the Ontario capital that rather appropriately eschews his usual country-pop for a more urban soft rock sound. Accompanied by his regular backing band, including producer Colin Cripps and bandmate Bazil Donovan, it's a subtle change in direction that works wonders on the cruising Eagles-esque Americana of "Regular Days," which provides a perfectly suited soundtrack to its story of a cash-strapped couple on a road trip; the gentle acoustic melancholy of "Everyone Watched the Wedding," a heartfelt tale of a man taking stock of his life after watching the recent Royal nuptials; and the lilting piano melodies and ELO-style harmonies of "Don't Know That Much." But with only the toe-tapping rhythms, honky tonk piano chords, and breezy trumpet hooks of the Billy Joel-inspired "Still Want You" and "Water's Running High," a gritty slice of old-school R&B originally intended for a comedy short featuring his wife, moving out of second gear, the record feels a little too one-note to match the obvious passion he has for his beloved city. Indeed, it's not difficult to see why the violin-led instrumental "City Birds" was rejected from a recent film score for being "too sentimental," while the stripped-back "Ready to Fall" and "With You" have their hearts in the right place, but are just too dreary to make any lasting impression. Cuddy has admitted that his solo career is for the songs that aren't cool enough for his day-job outfit, and while it undeniably contains a certain charm, Skyscraper Soul's lack of excitement ensures that no one is likely to disagree with him. ~ Jon O'Brien See Details

Light That Guides You Home, the second solo album from Blue Rodeo co-leader Jim Cuddy, doesn't deviate much from his band's roots rock, jangle pop sound. Which is good news for followers of the veteran Canadian band, or just admirers of their smart rock craftsmanship. The winning title track immediately alerts listeners that Cuddy's at the top of this game. The tune, an apologia for a hopeful reconciliation, is a chimey mid-tempo rocker that brings to mind the old Del Amitri hit, "Always the Last to Know." The record is rife with tales of damaged or broken relationships. The bittersweet "Maybe Sometimes" finds Cuddy lamenting "there's never the chance to say goodbye" amidst picturesque imagery of the sun rising over Lake Louise and fond memories of "quiet smiles and silent walking." On the spare "Pull Me Through," he admits, "There's messages I should return/And people I should call/I'm still tripping over echoes/Left lying in the hall." The reflective "She Gets Down" holds the telling insight: "Sometimes the world we want is different than the one we find." While literate lyrics, long a Cuddy hallmark, are in fine evidence here, this album isn't a starch dry effort in songcraft. One of the most memorable tracks is the rollicking "Married Again." A twangy duet featuring Kathleen Edwards, it contains the great couplet "Sixteen bottles and a wedding trunk/Oughta be a law about marrying drunk." Cuddy, who co-produced the CD with guitarist Colin Cripps, does a fine job of shifting moods and tempos throughout the disc. Strings and keyboards broaden Cuddy's guitar-based musical core. There's even a muted trumpet solo that punctuates "Pull Me Through." A good example of this variety comes with the stellar trio of tunes that conclude the album. The folk-poppy "Falling" flows into the quietly stirring "What She Said," which is followed by the rousing set-closer "Stagger In." While this disc might just seem like a busman's holiday from Blue Rodeo, Cuddy nonetheless has fashioned a thoroughly absorbing solo outing populated with memorable roots rock that resonates in the heart and the mind. ~ Michael Berick See Details

As the founding fathers, mothers, brothers, and sisters of the "indie rock collective" phenomenon, Broken Social Scene sure have spread their seeds since their eponymous third album in 2005. Between the commercial success of Leslie Feist and the myriad "Broken Social Scene Presents" solo outings, some feared that the Canadian supergroup's next outing would be a lackluster collection of stitched-together notebook ramblings and half-hearted demos swept up from the studio floor of previous sessions. Luckily, the endlessly creative and surprisingly fluid Forgiveness Rock Record dispels any notion of opportunism by sticking to what the group does best: crafting clever, ramshackle, occasionally soaring bedroom pop songs (listen close for sirens) in a big expensive studio. Bolstered by a handful of evenly spaced, arena-sized rockers like "World Sick," "Forced to Love," "Ungrateful Little Father," and "Water in Hell," the remaining ten tracks flip through genres like a picture book, pausing only to pencil in the occasional instrumental, one of which ("Meet Me in the Basement," with its huge strings and "guitarmonies") elicits bigger goose bumps than some of the singalongs. That's not to say that the guts of the record are filler, as some of the best moments are its most nuanced (Emily Haines, Leslie Feist, and Amy Millan's breezy, instantly engaging "Sentimental X," the easy, dusty "Highway Slipper Jam"), proving once again that an army can make a cohesive album if everyone follows the rules of engagement. The core members may be down to nine, with an emphasis on founders Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning, but the "additional members" and "guests" involved (31 strong, when all is said and done) are what make Forgiveness Rock Record unique, especially in an era where bloated membership is so often used as a gimmick. ~ James Christopher Monger See Details

Since the release of Feel Good Lost, Toronto music collective Broken Social Scene became a bit more collective, swelling from two members to ten (plus guests). As you'd expect with such a dramatic rise in membership, there's a lot more variety this time out -- the first two tracks are a case in point; in fact, the first track is a fairly airy instrumental number with a Mark Isham-like feel, but track two slams it off the rails with a driving beat and wailing guitars. Main members Brendan Canning and Kevin Drew even sing this time around (on "Cause=Time" Drew sounds almost like J Mascis); Leslie Feist and Emily Haines take their turns on other tracks. According to one of the members of this incarnation of the group, trying to determine "who did what" on this album would be almost an entire review in itself, as everyone took turns playing different instruments on different tracks and the whole thing was built from the ground up in a very collective fashion. Although listeners who found the first Broken Social Scene release a nice ambient pop treat may be put off by this one's all-over-the-map approach, it's certainly a much more accessible release overall and there's bound to be something in here that you'll enjoy. Following the success of their Springsteen-esque Juno Award-winning debut album, Jackson Square, Ontario five-piece Arkells continue to pilfer the sounds of the '80s blue-collar rock scene with their sophomore effort, Michigan Left. The Boss' influence is still very much evident throughout its ten tracks, from the "Dancing in the Dark"-ish synths of "On Paper" to the rousing heartland anthem of "Bloodlines." But second time round, the Canadians have delved much further into their vintage record collection for inspiration. Inspired by the university where the band formed, the groove-laden "Where U Goin" echoes the feel-good blue-eyed soul of Hall & Oates; "One Foot Out the Door" blends the atmospheric MOR of Mike + the Mechanics with the chiming widescreen rock of U2; while on the energetic "Whistleblower," frontman Max Kerman channels the impassioned vocal tones of Michael Hutchence against a backdrop of rumbling basslines, echo-laden guitars, and call-and-response chants. As authentic as these retro offerings are, it's only when they ditch their Now That's What I Call the '80s handbook, as on the angular indie pop of opener "Book Club" and the slow-building proggy finale, "Agent Zero" (bizarrely dedicated to NBA star Gilbert Arenas), that they avoid becoming just another generic and over-earnest guitar band. With its several skyscraper choruses and super-sized hooks, Michigan Left will no doubt continue Arkells' ascension into the upper echelons of the Canadian rock scene, but there's little here likely to inspire the next generation of stadium rock stars. ~ Jon O'Brien See Details

Bryan Adams was played a great deal on the radio in 1984/5; his music was the most radio-friendly rock to have been heard in a long time. Revisiting this album more than a decade later still confirms this; if anything, hearing him less makes you like him more. The hit singles still sound consistently good - 'Somebody', 'Summer Of '69' and 'Run To You' - but although he has a clearly recognizable style and sound all the other tracks sound fresh. Eva Avila's first release following her effortless claiming of Canadian Idol's title in 2006 didn't quite match the talent of the Quebec beauty seen on the show. Avila, whose sensual voice glimmered and soared in a mixed bag of artist samplings not limited to the Rolling Stones and Alicia Keys, fell short in terms of releasing a first album that reflected the multi-dimensional talent heard and adored by her fans. Avila's first album was stuffed with hardly satisfying midtempo numbers and ballads which filled the listener up with pure fluff and no substance; ultimately, Avila had tunes that came nowhere close to allowing her voice to be a vehicle for international success. This time around, though, that problem seems to have been tackled and fixed by the album's lead single and title track. "Give Me the Music," the first sampling of the sophomore release by Avila, is impressively infectious, sexy, and sensual, and most importantly, promising. "Give Me the Music" is the first real example of how exciting Avila is as a pop revelation; her beyond impressive vocal capacity is glorified on this bouncing beat, not hindered like many of her contemporaries. However, in terms of success, Avila's management team has not put all their eggs in one basket; using the title track of the album as a promising first single, but providing support on it. The rest of the album is plentiful in terms of solid adult contemporary pop; stuff that is much more impressive than material covered on her first release, Somewhere Else. Yet aside from "You Don't Say No," most of the slower jams blend. There are a couple of notable exceptions that may function as a possible second single in terms of quality and vibe: the album's opener "No Smoke" is quite fiery and could blaze up quite a few listeners with its sultry sound, and the fresh, dramatic "Like a Bullet" stands out as a truly spunky vocal display; yet a huge chunk of the album doesn't match the promise of its first single. Had "My Neighborhood" been more than just a demo track, it may also have had commercial success. However, Avila's management seems stuck on giving her music that doesn't let her shine on all accounts. A large part of the second album is middling filler that Avila simply doesn't deserve. There is certainly more artistic merit on this release, with Avila's "Damned" providing angry sounds that seem to complement her voice quite well. Give Me the Music is hardly a bad album, and Avila sounds nearly as wonderfully delicious as she did when her fan base first grew to love her on Canadian Idol. When the tunes are good, the potential is magnified and glorified, the musical support, however, is just not always there. Technically, Toronto's Our Lady Peace have been around for more than a decade, but nonetheless, their 2006 greatest-hits album, A Decade, arrives right on time in the course of their career. After all, the title does makes sense -- the songs here start with their 1995 debut, Naveed, and go all the way through 2005's Healthy in Paranoid Times, drawing multiple tracks from both albums and the four in between, to paint a rather representative picture of the Canadian post-grunge rockers. OLP have been around long enough that this isn't just a superfluous release, instead actually doing fans -- especially casual ones -- a favor by rounding up basically every big hit the band has ever had into one tidy package. This is all the OLP that anyone could ever really need, since they've thoughtfully trimmed away all of the excess fat to leave only the meaty, most memorable offerings on the table for maximum satisfaction. The record aptly covers the two relatively different sides of the band -- both of which share the distinct vocal stylings of Raine Maida -- and the guys can rock out (i.e. "Starseed," "Superman's Dead," "One Man Army," "Where Are You") just as easily as they can bring it down a notch for smooth and soaring reflection (i.e. "4AM," "Thief," "Life," "Angels/Losing/Sleep"). The album cover to Fefe Dobson's third studio album, Joy, is most likely symbolic. Picturing the young performer collapsed on her own stage, it's likely representative of the five years of drama that Dobson endured after her second album, Sunday Love, was ultimately shelved days before its release and Dobson was dropped from her label. In the time that Dobson was label-less, she was certainly keeping busy, still occasionally touring and songwriting, most prominently with Disney teen prodigy Selena Gomez. Though Dobson saw her career halt and found herself forced to work with artists who can hardly touch her in terms of talent, she never gave up -- and neither did her fans. After releasing two singles independently -- the ever so spunky "I Want You" and the slick and spicy "Watch Me Move" (very clearly a big f-you to her former label) -- she was re-signed to Island Records, and got an independent distribution deal with Universal at the same time. Dobson had gone from has-been to hot commodity. The question remains, is Joy a great album? The answer is an unequivocal yes. The album could have been a sappy collection of moody ballads, a collection of all the dark tunes that Dobson penned during her time without a label. However, if Dobson was ever not producing top-quality, charismatic pop/rock radio smash tunes, we would never know the difference. Dobson had a hand in writing each of these power numbers, which represent her strongest body of work to date. From lead single "Ghost" (co-written by Kara DioGuardi and produced by Kevin Rudolf) to the follow-up midtempo chart burner "Stuttering," Dobson proves she's on top of the pop market, with some immaculate writing and production that keep her fresh with the contemporaries who sprang up while she was away from the game. However, the strength comes in the non-singles, which slide farther from radio fodder and into a greasier, grittier set that is often too absent in pop music these days: Dobson bites back against her vices on "Thanks for Nothing" and sends a rival woman running on the Howard Benson-produced "You Bitch"; it's these tracks where Dobson's fire blazes strongest, and she catapults herself into the ranks of spitfire pop artists like Kelly Clarkson and P!nk. Not to mention, just when you think she's kept herself guarded, Dobson rips herself open on "Set Me Free," making it clear that the hardships she's endured because of the music business have truly left her scarred; it's these scars, however, that make her ballads so bruising and her spunk and charm so fresh and believable. Joy may not be such a cheerful album, but it stands to be an epic comeback for a genuinely talented pop artist who was shafted by the industry that would welcome her back with open arms, and that is definitely a joyous story. ~ Matthew Chisling See Details

Not one of Nelly Furtado's albums sounds like the one that came before -- an admirable trait in an artist but not one that lends itself easily to a hits compilation. The Best of Nelly Furtado, released for the holiday season of 2010, doesn't hide this freewheeling eclecticism, probably because it'd be impossible to do so, but the changes in sound don't quite cause whiplash either, because similar-sounding singles are grouped together. Her earliest hits ("I'm Like a Bird," "Turn Off the Light," "....On the Radio [Remember the Days]") are gathered at the beginning while her dynamic collaborations with Timbaland ("Promiscuous," "Maneater") anchor the collection at its middle, the three newer songs ("Girlfriend in the City," "Stars," the single "Night Is Young") appearing at the end with selections from Folklore and Mi Plan acting as bridges between these clusters. As she's prone to do every four years or so, Celine Dion released a French-language album called D'Elles in 2007, her first since 2003's stripped-down, folky 1 Fille & 4 Types. To be fair, Pallett's last release, the superb He Poos Clouds was an "an eight-song cycle about the eight schools of magic in Dungeons & Dragons" adorned with a cover that included a hand-drawn rendering of the action described in the title. As with all of his works, Heartland wears its absurd premise high and proud, allowing its creator the freedom to explore the entire spectrum of human emotion without ever succumbing to hipster irony. Pallett, the shifty, strung-out composition major in the back of the class, bored to tears and three steps ahead of the professor, chose to go the orchestral route this time around, utilizing the talented Czech Philharmonic in Prague. Fans of He Poos Clouds' long, dissonant motifs, odd, symphonic percussion, and slightly skewed, indie-prog-rock vibe will find Heartland a bigger, better, and more streamlined collection than the latter was, boasting more than its share of left-field singles ("Midnight Directives" and "Tryst with Mephistopheles" are instant keepers) -- think Grizzly Bear, Patrick Wolf, and Rufus Wainwright attempting an alternate universe mash-up of the Beach Boys' Pet Sounds and the Flaming Lips' Soft Bulletin. Andy Kim's first four albums managed to escape CD reissue until 2006, when Collectors Choice released a pair of two-fers containing his three albums for Steed and his sole effort for Uni. The first of these contained his 1968 debut "How'd We Ever Get This Way" and its 1969 follow-up, Rainbow Ride, two records that showcased Kim's knack for commercial pop music, pitched partway between bubblegum and Brill Building tradition, often recalling both the effervescence and moodiness that marked Neil Diamond's '60s work for Bang. Brill Building mainstays Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich produced those recordings, and after their partnership soured, Barry started writing with Kim on a regular basis, eventually signing Kim to his fledgling label, Steed. "How'd We Ever Get This Way" was Kim's debut, consisting entirely of material he co-wrote with Barry, and it's an excellent example of hooky mainstream pop from the late '60s: bright, melodic, and well-constructed, from its composition to its productions. At times, it may sound strikingly like Diamond -- "Just Like Your Shadow" recalls "Solitary Man," right down to the mournful horns that come in on the second verse; "Love That Little Woman" bounces along on handclaps and maracas just like "You Got to Me" -- it does so without ever sounding imitative; it sounds like the work of a singer/songwriter with similar gifts, sharpened and honed by Diamond's producer. That producer also happened to be a producer for the Monkees, and there are echoes of that group as well; it's easy to imagine "Circus" as sung by Micky Dolenz and the skipping "Shoot 'Em Up Baby" is just gimmicky enough to work well on TV. At times, the music edges toward the middle-of-the-road (the swelling strings on "Pretty Thing"), and sometimes it bears traces of psych-pop, but it never goes too far in either direction. With the exception of the dreamy, dramatic closer "Resurrection," which is notable and excellent in its own way, this is late-'60s pop at its lightest and brightest, and cut for cut it's one of the strongest records of its kind, thanks to songs as irrepressibly catchy as "How'd We Ever Get This Way" and sweetly understated as the McCartney-esque "Ordinary Kind of Girl." If How'd We Ever Get This Way established the Andy Kim sound -- as catchy as bubblegum, but with a distinct foundation in Brill Building-styled mainstream pop not far afield from Neil Diamond -- on his second album Rainbow Ride he expanded that sound without essentially altering it. Again, most of the album was devoted to Andy Kim and Jeff Barry compositions -- there was one cover here, the Everly Brothers' "I Wonder if I Care as Much" -- but that doesn't necessarily mean they were co-compositions. Five of the cuts are credited to Kim alone, two are Barry solo works, with the other four being joint efforts by these collaborators, but this level of detail is only apparent when the credits are studied: their work fits together so comfortably: there are no seams between the songs, they derive from the same sensibility. This sensibility remains commercial pop at its core, but Rainbow Ride, as Richie Unterberger astutely points out in his liner notes for the Collectors Choice reissue, does find Kim and Barry incorporating many fashionable rock sounds of the late '60s into Kim's signature sound. There are swirling, phased guitars, wah-wahs pumping in the background, electric sitars, harpsichords, and other psychedelic flourishes all throughout the album, peaking in the woozy narcotic breakdowns on "I Want You" that sound nothing less than a miniature approximation of Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love" freakout, but it was recorded before that monumental metal anthem. There are also hints of serious material, best heard in Barry's "Eve of Destruction"-styled protest folk-rock "Nobody's Ever Going Anywhere," but Rainbow Ride remains as purely pop as its predecessor: it just has a broader sonic palette filled with vivid colors. That psychedelic coloring might date the album in a pleasant way, but overall it has aged well because the songs are strong beneath the production. "Wonderful You" has a soulful punch worthy of the Box Tops, the fuzz-toned "Please Be True" -- itself a slight rewrite of the themes of the Beatles' "Run for Your Life" -- has a real sense of urgency, while the title track comes across like a psychedelicized version of the early Monkees. Some of this may drift or meander -- nowhere more so than on the Latin-tinged closer "To Be Continued," an ill-fated twist on Herb Alpert -- but most of Rainbow Ride is as catchy and memorable as the music on How'd We Ever Get This Way, making this a more than worthy follow-up to one of the best overlooked mainstream pop albums of the late '60s. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine See Details

Released ten years after her debut, Superbeautifulmonster is Bif Naked's fourth album of original material. Not exactly a prolific work schedule, and her body of work isn't the most diverse, either: she's been mining an angst-ridden, confessional, metal-inflected punk-pop vein since her debut. She's stuck with the sound when it was in fashion in the mid- to late '90s as well as when it was out of fashion at the turn of the millennium, and she sticks with it in 2005, when neo-alternative rock is common, if not exactly fashionable. As they say, even a broken clock is right twice a day, and that's kind of the case with Bif Naked: she fit in when this sound was new, and she fits in again now that the sound has been revived. Of course, it helps that her lyrics are still somewhat stuck in late adolescence, whether she's writing about alienation, anger, or lust, since that arrested development gives her music a weird sense of sincerity. Musically, she's long been working power ballads and touches of metal into her alt-rock, but this isn't as big or glossy as Purge -- the music is a bit stripped-down, even when she's doing soul-searching pop like "Everyday" or anthemic rock like "Henry." At times, she can sound more like Pink than is perhaps comfortable for longtime fans, but before that impression has the chance to settle in for good, she's back to louder, tougher rock that's closer to a tuneful Courtney Love with a work ethic and sense of discipline. That doesn't mean that Superbeautifulmonster is cohesive, however. Bif Naked tries too hard to have introspective ballads, heavy rockers, and punk attitude all at once for this to really gel into a consistent LP. More sharply defined than its predecessor IF IT WAS YOU, SO JEALOUS proffers 14 strong songs with appealing, fully realized arrangements that encompass rock, folk, pop, and New Wave at once, while injecting the whole with a healthy dose of independent, punky energy. Only the dreamy "Fix You Up" has an intimate folky vibe here, and even this ends with a crashing full-band crescendo. On the rest of the album Tegan & Sara file their sensitive songwriting to a fine rock edge, channeling emo tendencies (many of the songs are about heartache and despair) through punchy guitar lines and half-sultry, half-bratty vocals (with their lovely harmonizing offsetting the edge). The pure, power-pop pleasure of "Take Me Anywhere" is balanced by the kaleidoscopic title track (complete with Moog intro), while the angular, keyboard-heavy "Walking with a Ghost" sounds straight out of early-'80s New Wave radio. Talented chamber pop troubadour Rufus Wainwright followed up his startlingly fresh debut album with the 2001 release Poses. While his self-titled first album was very much a work by Wainwright (aided by his contributing producers), Poses seems to be more of a group effort, with the young composer allowing the other performers on the album to lend their talents, creating an even fuller, more "live" sound. Both Wainwright's younger sister Martha and son of British folk near-legends Richard and Linda Thompson, Teddy Thompson contribute harmony vocals which soar above Rufus' affecting moan like the choir he must hear in his head. Produced by Pierre Marchand (Sarah McLachlan), the album continues the same outstretched, enveloping sound established by Wainwright's earlier work, but contributors like contemporary composer Damian le Gassick and Propellerheads' Alex Gifford push in different directions, adding understated drum loops and gritty beats in unexpected places. Above all of the studio gimcrackery and pedigreed guest stars floats Wainwright himself, whose introspective, wry, and heart-wrenching songwriting remains his true strength (although his leisurely operatic tenor is not far behind). The clunking, loping "Greek Song" evokes the sprawl of an impossible Ingmar Bergman spaghetti Western, while the swaggering "California" shows a sunny exterior masking the song's satirical sneer. Amidst this sonic barrage, a high point comes in the cover of patriarch Loudon Wainwright III's "One Man Guy." Performed by Rufus, Martha, and Teddy Thompson's simple acoustic guitar, these three grown children of the '70s folk movement embrace the song faithfully, basking in their own harmonies and offering a respite from the blissfully lush orchestral pop that surrounds it. While Poses shows growth and worthwhile exploration, the album's "group" feel suffers only slightly from being less intimate than Wainwright's first album. Although his contributors add much, there was something blushingly personal about his debut that may have gotten a little buried this time around. That being said, Poses is still a spectacular album, brimming over with Wainwright's trademark popera and young romantic wishes. At times the album is beautifully discordant and sonically chilling, but often hints at warm grins with mischievous winks. Picking up where Want One left off, Rufus Wainwright's Want Two is a deeply introspective, sometimes kinky and often personally critical set of mini-operettas that ruminate on his various relationships, drug abuse, and image in the media. Metaphorically liturgical and often classical in sound, Want Two touches on such inner-related themes as love, loneliness, sin and sacrifice. It's more focused than Want One and as such packs more of wallop both musically and emotionally. On the cover of Want One, Wainwright appeared as a chivalrous knight in armor bringing to mind the conquering crusader -- Sir Gawain the gay knight? Conversely, on Want Two he appears as a dark-haired maiden -- Sleeping Beauty or the suicidal Ophelia? The imagery not only speaks to the campy and loaded cliché of the male and female, yin and yang drive of the gay male persona, but more importantly how one's personal desires are often sacrificed because of public successes. Never one to shy away from personal issues, Wainwright deals explicitly with how his sexuality has affected his life and career, not merely as a gay man but as a burgeoning gay icon with a complex desire to both embrace and ignore all that entails. This is no more apparent than on the album centerpiece, the iconoclastic "Gay Messiah," in which Wainwright both mocks gay pop culture and laments his ability to live up his fan base's desire for an artistic hero in the culture wars. He sings, "He will be reborn/ From 1970s porn/ Wearing tube socks with style/ And such an innocent smile," and later, "No it will not be me/ Rufus the baptist I be." Similarly, on the opening track "Agnus Dei," he croons, "Agnus dei/ Qui tollis peccata mundi/ Dona nobis pacem." Translated, it means "Lamb of God, Who takest away the sins of the world, Grant us peace." It's Wainwright's most direct plea for both personal and public absolution and helps leave the impression of an artist attempting to find emotional buoyancy in the often perilous waters of both the music business and the dating scene. Musically, Wainwright has never seemed more in command of his muse. References to Nilsson, Brian Wilson and Randy Newman are a matter of course, but Wainwright's growth as a pop craftsman with his own unique lyrical voice -- both conceptually and literally -- makes such comparisons unnecessary. To these ends, lush string orchestras, cheery choirs and piping horn sections decorate the impeccably scored album and perfectly complement Wainwright's swooning vocals. Taken as a whole, Want One and Want Two work well together as a sprawling and ambitious double album that is camp, serious and utterly compelling. Zeus' debut owes part of its existence to Jason Collett, the Canadian roots rocker (and former Broken Social Scene member) who employed Zeus' two co-founders for years in his backing band.
