The painted wood on this toy is very 'chip proof' ! My little guy has tossedit and dented them quite a bit but the paint has yet to budge, he can't quite get the rings onto the peg yet (he's only 8 months) but he lovesto stack, bang and roll the rings. It's a very durable and attractive toy.

My daughter is one and she is very attracted to this toy. The recommended age for the toy is 3, most likely due to the small size of some of the pieces. I've never considered this as an issue, simply because it never occurred to me until now and even though my child does like to mouth everything she has not tried to cram any of the pieces in her mouth.
I am a little concerned about the wooden dowel mounted on the base as it could hurt a child if they fell on it - supervised play is definitely required.
I gave this to her to play at 10 months and now at 12 months she is starting to stack the pieces... Its definitely a favorite with her!
One last thing - the paint has started to chip on some of the pieces...

The paint started to chip off and crack. We also removed the red ball on top and the smaller pieces. Due to the recent Melissa and Doug RECALL from Health Canada - we are not buying these painted toys again.

    Small Rings

Some of the rings are too small to be safe. The paint also is not durable. One ring broke apart right on the first day!
