Rated 4 out of 5 by from I would buy these and more just like them. Nice wooden blocks. Not as large in scale as the ones I bought forty years ago and remember fondly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I really like the creative aspect of this toy. This was a Christmas gift for my second grandson who is almost 4. I had purchased standard unit blocks before for my first grandson who now is 8. They both love playing with the blocks when they come to Ohio for visits. The little one mentioned he was going to ask Santa to bring him some blocks for his house. I helped Santa out. I know he will be pleased to be able to take his own set home when they come for the holidays.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Hours of creative fun My 1.5 year old son loves these blocks. We use them to talk about the different shapes, and also to work on his motor skills by stacking. This is one of those toys that grow with your child. As they get older, they can build more with them. This is one of the best toys we have purchased

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent spatial development toy for a wide age group. So heavy buteasy for a child, even a 21 month old can begin exploring with these blocks. Bought these for my great-grandson for Christmas, so he 's overwhelmed by the " massiveness " . Friend highly recommended these as being suitable even up to 8 yrs of age

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Smaller than "Standard Unit Blocks" A standard unit block is 5.5 inches long, 2.75 inches wide, and 1.375 inches thick. These blocks are (1-1/2-by-2-by-5-inches). It may seem like a minor difference, but it is significant. True standard unit blocks are twice as long as they are wide and twice as wide as they are thick. This makes them a valuable spacial learning tool because it gives kids hands on ways to explore putting two halves together to make a whole (among other mathematical concepts. I am very fond of most M&D toys. It is disappointing that they miss-label these blocks as standard unit blocks.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great blocks I had originally intended to purchase the set that contained 100 pieces, but settled on this one instead. These blocks are VERY durable! My kids (he's 4, she's 7) got these for Christmas 2011, and this is probably the most played with toy they have. They build houses and towers and castles, etc, then knock them down. With all that demolition work, only one block has a tiny chip in a corner. Plastic toys come and go, but I think these will be around for a very long time. Good, quality wood. Really gets the creative juices flowing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Deal I LOVE IT So much i have purchases another set so the kids can go BIGGER!!! I bought these blocks for my daycare as a creativity toy and found so many more wounderful uses. Being a standard Unit is great 2 small blocks make a med block 2 med blocks make a big one etc. It has even shown useful in helping my 10 year old (who has learning disabilities) the basic concepts of fractions and geometry!! This product remains the best value it takes a beating from the littest and still provides quality for everyone!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not safe for little mouths I love playing with unit blocks and so does my daughter. But I have mixed feelings about the Melissa & Doug Standard Unit Blocks. I bought three of these sets for my now three-and-a-half year old daughter back when she was about six months old, in spite of the Ages 3+ label. They're on a special bookshelf in her room. She loves to play with them. As far as a toy goes, I recommend standard unit blocks to anyone who will listen. I even purchased two more sets: one for a friend and one for my niece and nephew. That's five sets. Recently, I was dumbstruck to learn that they're REALLY not suitable for under age 3 because the wood is not considered safe for small mouths. The wood they use is a soft Asian "hardwood" that is not naturally anti-microbial. It's typically treated after it is cut down with borates or other pesticides and insecticides to prevent infestations. That's the trouble with manufacturing everything in southeast Asia. You can't be sure that you'll receive what you're expecting. You just don't know what you don't know. A few chemical additives are perhaps not such a big deal with older kids, but they're obviously a big concern for me. My daughter has been mouthing these "natural finish" blocks for several years now. I just don't feel like this is a safe enough product, particularly if you have infants and toddlers around. Questions to Melissa & Doug's customer service line received a simple, "WE don't ADD any chemicals to our blocks." Well, I knew that. M&D doesn't manufacture these blocks -- it's all outsourced -- so obviously they're not going to break open the shrink-wrapped packages and ADD anything. I'm not even concerned about chemicals ADDED during manufacturing. I'm concerned about the chemical added to the wood BEFORE manufacturing. "Oh, we'll get back to you." They never did. So I switched to buying Made-in-the-USA Hard Rock Maple standard unit blocks because of these safety concerns. I was surprised to find that the blocks made in the US were better cut and came in more (and larger) shapes and sizes. The cost is higher, maybe twice as much per block, but I feel like it's worth it, particularly when my daughter puts one in her mouth (pretending it's pizza or whatever she's decided to cook up today). Also, the extra durability of the hard rock maple unit blocks doesn't hurt when our dog decides to chew on one of the column blocks. The Melissa & Doug unit blocks turn to mush in our big dog's mouth, but his teeth marks in the hard rock maple unit blocks can be sanded out.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Very disappointing We were very disappointed when we opened the box and realized that there were only two large long blocks in the entire set. Most of the pieces are small "scrap" pieces. It was also not very honest of this company to insert Styrofoam under the blocks giving them "lift" and making it appear that there were more blocks in the crate then there actually were.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best blocks out there I bought this for my 2 year old. I was worried that since it didn't have any color that they might prove boring BUT I was WRONG. He loves them. He uses them as ramps for his little cars and builds and stacks them. He has lots of fun and he always goes back to them. I highly recommend because they are solid wood, no paint to worry about chipping or looking bad, and they come in a wood storage box. This is a heavy duty product that can stand the test of time.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Too many small blocks These are georgeous blocks. They feel so nice in your hand, no rough edges or sharp points. I am dissapointed in the selection of blocks. There are (12) 2.5x1 blocks but only (4) 5x2.5 blocks. And there (10) 2.5x2.5 blocks. I would much prefered more 5x2.5 blocks and one or two more of the 10x2.5 blocks. I am putting that I recommend them to a friend but I would also recommend to that friend to purchase another set that has more bigger blocks and fewer small ones.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love these blocks My boys(5yrs and 9yrs) got these blocks as a gift 2yrs ago and they still love them. Such a simple yet useful tool for their imagination. They will sit for hours and make flight ramps for their jets or bases for their little Army soldiers. The best toy they have ever gotten :0)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome! These are great blocks. My son has had them for three years and they continue to be his favorite toy. I'm thinking of adding another set so he can build even bigger and better things! Right now he loves to build a "mechanic shop" out of them (he's five!) and drive his matchbox cars there to get fixed. The only con I can think of? If you step on one on a tile floor, you will go sliding ;) Overall, it's a super high quality product, beautiful finish, and seemingly indestructible.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from GREAT BLOCKS I bought these for my son's second birthday and I am sooooo glad that I did. Both my son (2) and my daughter (5) love to play with these. They are very durable and great quality. I also bought the standard unit blocks to make for a bigger set.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent product This is a wonderfull product. It is fun and safe. The only reason that I didn't give it 5 stars is that in one space where there should be another block is a styrofoam block. I just don't get it. The wood quality is excellent and the box contruction is sound. I would absolutely recomend this product to friends and family while telling them about the styrofoam insert. But that might just be my peeve.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from awesome! My kids love this block set. We actually have two sets of these blocks, because we have three young kids, and so, well, we need a lot of blocks! The wood is good quality, the blocks are sturdy and very smooth, and I like the natural finish on them, so the kids are use their imagination to whatever they are building.
