about

From bestselling author Lemony Snicket and celebrated illustrator Maira Kalman comes an uproarious, whimsical word book like no other.

Together, Snicket and Kalman present a strikingly beautiful journey woven from a practical introduction to thirteen wonderful words, featuring such marvels as Bird, Dog, Panache, and Haberdashery. Snicket, the notoriously clever and elusive New York Times bestselling author, pushes the boundaries of storytelling in the most fanciful of ways. Maira Kalman, renowned for her art and design, carries this madcap adventure to wondrous heights with her vision of a world populated with hats, song, and cake. This rollicking, surprising book is a true celebration of words.

Lemony Snicket is often despondent, mostly about his published research, which includes A Series of Unfortunate Events andThe Composer Is Dead.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Unexpected vocabulary builder I got this for my son because he liked "The Dark" by Lemony Snicket so much, and I was surprised by how great the language use is. The 13 words are used repeatedly, so you get lots of context out of them, and a total nearly three, my kiddo knows what despondent means! The story itself is fun and whimsical enough to keep kids entertained, and the illustrations have lots of colours, and a huge variety of things to see, even outside the main story line. I love it, and it's one my kiddo goes back to over and over. And really, more books for every age should be using words like "haberdashery"; it's delightful. #plumreview

Editorial Reviews

“A book that pushes boundaries and demands such active participation on the part of both readers and listeners to connect language and images (and Kalman’s quirky artwork is a perfect fit, littered with fun details) is to be commended.”
