The brilliance of the Renaissance laid the foundation of the modern world. Textbooks tell us that it came about as a result of a rediscovery of the ideas and ideals of classical Greece and Rome. But now bestselling historian Gavin Menzies makes the startling argument that in the year 1434, China—then the world's most technologically advanced civilization—provided the spark that set the European Renaissance ablaze. From that date onward, Europeans embraced Chinese ideas, discoveries, and inventions, all of which form the basis of Western civilization today.

The New York Times bestselling author of 1421 combines a long-overdue historical reexamination with the excitement of an investigative adventure, bringing the reader aboard the remarkable Chinese fleet as it sails from China to Cairo and Florence, and then back across the world. Erudite and brilliantly reasoned, 1434 will change the way we see ourselves, our history, and our world.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Gallileo only an illustrator? Magnificent truth is surfacing. My father is a hero worshipper of Gallileo, as he is old school, studying Greek even in high school as mandatory curiculum. My father thinks Alexander the great also as a hero, so when will Menzies tackle the Ashoka empire of India and its massive metal pillars throughout northern India... And Cairo. And also in Greece. My point is we think of Gallileo and Alexander as Euros. But their minds are Chinese, or Orient seekers. Alexander established Alexandria for a very good reason. Would Orient trade to Cairo maintain his planned empire? We are silenced by the Catholicism that has prevailed out of 30 or so... 'versions'. Jesus as King in the Mediterranean, with his royal wife queen of Syria as his partner in resisting Rome's is the basis for 2 annointings by oil of Jesus by Royal Mary in the Bible. Syrian Marriage anointing of the feet and not the head is another question for Menzies to let readers know about in North America, as we don't get that version over here in terrifyingly ignorant isolation. Why not a Menzies book about Mary's forearm bone encased in silver in a Paris temple? Indeed, why not a Royal Mary. I predict that USA democracy in the Middle east will also fail as it failed in eastern Europe. Russia is an Eagle again for a nostalgic reason. That is not a psychic prediction. Menzies as usual tells us we don't know truth in history and the questions are blaring to those who would study his work. For those of us tech-savy eWorlders, the prose put forth by Menzies is the equivalent of playing the game 'Civilization" by Sid Myers and encountering an advanced civilization that decides to share it's library of information with the people encountered. 'Levelling the playing field' as only us eWorlders can imagine to 'suddenly' happening isn't the Nazi -celtic version that communism claims before it kills all the farmers in ignorance. This isn't Art bell and Whitley Strieber's 'Global Superstorm', but it is the literary and historical, technological and cultural equivalent. a href=" http://www.chapters.indigo.ca/books/The-Coming-Global-Superstorm-Art-Bell-Whitley-Strieber/9780743470650-item.html The-Coming-Global-Superstorm /a The result for the Orient? Just as 2000 years of Rome weeded out and chased the Greeks to India, The anti - orient opium wars and excuses of American imperialism in Okinawa (arguably a place that wants to be independent as its' own kingdom) is the result of the Italians and Euro 'using' the Chinese delegation goodwill just as Russian goodwill uses oil in the middle of winter to enforce its' policy and its' version to people left out in the cold. So does General Winter and his Third Rome inherit only a cold history? As the Third Rome, Moscow and its' policies as a catholicism include communism as an offshoot of Catholicism, Rome, and the censorship of history by the fear of non-human behaviour. C.
