Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not Just for Intimate Relationships But Family and Friendships Too One of the most insightful relationship books I've ever read - not just for intimate relationships but also for how you can show friends and family that you love them as well. Only a short, quick read, it simply details the ways in which love and how it's shown can be misunderstood - or not communicated in the right 'language' - and how you go about speaking the 'love language' of the people closest to you. The one thing that might rub readers the wrong way with this book is that the author is strongly Christian (this isn't a religion book by any means, but it does come through) but I tended to ignore those sentiments (there's only a scattering of them) for the psychological foundation and handy case studies. I will admit I find that I appreciate most of the love languages when my partner speaks them to me (there are 5) but I do have 2 that are stronger than the rest. I promptly asked the rest of my family what their languages were and their answers really surprised me, and certainly didn't seem to be gender biased like some reviews here claim. It is very simplistic in its presentation, but I think that is part of what makes it good, it is not a challenging read but it can be transformative for those who feel like everyone should think as they do, and maybe nudge them into trying some of these methods out to see what happens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Highly recommend I absolutely love this book. I would recommend anyone reads it before getting married and truly does take the time to understand their partners love language. It is essential for communication and helps so much with happiness to know your partners and your own. The test at the back is a good touch!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Helpful The idea of having 5 love languages and needing to speak the same love language as your spouse isn't an idea that jumps to people's minds when they have relationship problems. When the excitement or the spark of a new relationship is gone, it's easy to believe the love is gone. Gary Chapman's idea of having 5 love languages and needing to speak the same language is brilliant. In this book, he breaks down each language, how to determine your own and your spouse's primary love language, and how to apply techniques that will speak to your partner. There is even a quiz at the end to help you discover your primary love language. I believe this will help with all relationships (not only for married couples).

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Thought provoking I liked this book - i enjoyed filling out the questionnaires and definately learned more about myself and my preferred "love language". I had my partner complete the questionnaire too and we had a great discussion about how we can "speak each other's love language" to better our communication and relationship. It has worked for us - we often go back to the books premise to remind each other of what is important. The only thing I didn't like is the book is infused with references to the Bible - but the book is written by a southern Baptist pastor so what else can you expect!! If you are Christian then this will be a great book for you. If you aren't, it is still worth reading if you are interested in bettering your relationships.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great read! I personally loved this book. It has real life examples to explain each of the love languages, which in turn help you discover what your love language is. I found it easy to relate to. I plan to come back to it over the years as a guide. It was a great conversation starter with my husband, and an insight as to potentially why tensions arise over the years.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A must read! This book is great and an easy read. The 5 Love Languages are so useful! The whole idea of identifying your love language and understanding it - and how it contrasts with your partner's love language - may seem like something that would have naturally already come up. However, sometimes we don't truly know what our style is until we analyze and talk about it with our partner. I have seen this book help many couples after recommending it to them. I understand my partner in a new, but simple/ easy-to-remember way. I am someone who needs words of affirmation to feel loved, so I assumed that my partner needed the same to feel my love. Thus, I would shower him in compliments despite him insisting he does not like compliments. After reading this book, and realizing that his love language pyramid is completely opposite mine, I understand better how to express love in a way that he understands/really feels.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Relationship Whisperer I had read the singles edition years ago and felt it a bit preachy and not as good...but now that I am in a long term partnership I bought this edition in hopes of improving our communication skills. Boy did this shed some light! Not only did I have my own love language misidentified, I also started to identify the good things I was missing in the throws of our disagreements. Such an important lesson especially emphasizing that real love puts the needs of our partners at the forefront in order to create a loving and respectful relationship. Highly recommended!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This book is life changing in all the right ways! I originally borrowed this book from a friend and instantly fell in love. The book offers so much thought and insight on truly being able to communicate with your spouses but also many other relationships that surround you. As a single 27 year old woman on the search for genuine and long lasting true love, I would highly recommend this book to anyone already in a marriage, getting into a marriage or just single and causally dating. It's a great read for everyone!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Gave me hope My counselor suggested this book to me regarding my problems with me spouse, and it has completely opened up my eyes. It's incredibly insightful and relatable, though as an unmarried lesbian, I wish the language were a little more gender neutral. Still, it gave me hope that my partner and I can have a more fulfilling relationship if we learn to speak our love in the right languages.
Date published: 2015-02-02
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great principles! My worn copy lives in my nightstand. When I feel disconnected from my loved one, I pull it out to remind myself to ask what I need (i.e. explain my love languages) and refresh myself on what his love languages are - and employ them!
Date published: 2014-11-18
Rated 5 out of 5 by from A must-read! I was skeptical when this book was recommended to me. There are so many relationship books out there that are not in the least helpful, but this one makes complete sense. I read the book in one sitting and immediately started putting the info to use. I couldn't believe it when I saw how quickly my husband responded to the new way I was interacting with him. It turns out I wasn't relating to him in the right "language" all this time. Our marriage is getting stronger by the day and life is far less stressful. Worth every cent!
Date published: 2014-08-01
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Really helpful! This book has given me words to use to help me in my relationships.  The examples are revealing and instructive.  This is great for more than just the marriage relationship, though the author has other specific books where all relationships are covered.  I would recommend them all!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beth I bought this a couple of weeks ago. My husband has listened to it first. I have yet too, but it has been a great discussion thus far. Every marriage needs help to work. I would recommend this one. I have read it years ago, but needed to hear it again. It's nice to have it on CD when you are on the run. I have also listened to the FIVE Love Languages of children. Very worth the money too.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Filling up the love tank. The Five Love Languages is a great read. I liked how the author split the book into sections to describe each love language and shared stories from clients who wanted to improve or save their relationship. It also made so much sense at how important it is to be in tune with each other's love language, otherwise so many conflicts arise unnecessarily. It seems like knowing what your partner's love language is really helps in how you can communicate effectively instead of just grasping at straws or being mind readers. Respect and patience go a long way when effort is displayed. This book wasn't filled with alot of jargon, but real situations that i'm sure many people have encountered. There were also easy to understand recommendations on how to enhance each partner's chosen love language at the end of each chapter. The only part I couldn't really relate to was the whole Christian religious paragraphs that Gary Chapman kept reverting back to. However, I took it into a more spiritual context for the purpose of my reading and was able to connect that way. Although I think that some people might sway from one love language to another at different stages of their relationship, one or two definitely stand out from the rest as a whole. Definitely recommend this book to foster healthy communication in relationships and to reduce the times of "go and sleep on the couch tonight."

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Valuable Resource To Understand Your Mate This book has one basic premise, that everyone communicates love differently and knowing how your partner, child, co-worker, friend communicates can help you to be a better partner, parent, etc. Very practical, and applicable. Great resource.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A must read for those requiring intimacy For anyone who has trouble expressing their feelings towards someone they truly care about, this is the book to read. It is well written and a fast read. In my opinion, you may find that caring and intimacy will return to your relationship after instituting some of the ideas presented here.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from If you're in a relationship, you need this book. I read this book years ago, before my wife and I married. It has helped us both to understand wordless expressions of love. Our oldest son is now getting married and we have suggested that he and his soon-to-be wife read it too. In my opinion, this book out does pre-marriage counselling and it will help avoid a trip to the counsellor after the wedding.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from IT'S A MUST 100% FOR A GREAT RELATIONSHIP As I have been divorced for 3 years now, I have been looking for the right person but as I was dating, I realized that working hard at a relationship instead of finding the perfect person is a must. Since I have read this book, I know what to do to be happy and to make the other person happy. Yes, of course, the other person needs to have some compabilities with you but much more is needed within a great relationship. I still have not remarried but now since I have read the book, my dates are turning into weeks and more now. This book has only about 200 pages and it's pretty fast to read and is very powerfull.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Book for Couples I really enjoyed this book. I learned a lot about myself and my husband and are different love languages. I would tell any couple who thinks their having communication problems to read this book and find out what love language they are and then communicate in your loved ones love language and watch how you life will change. This happened to me and my husband didn't even read the book. What an amazing book! I thank my sister for telling me about this book.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Five Love Languages This is an excellent book on relationships, especially with those close to you I believe our relationship has improved since both of us have read this book. My wife was always asking to go for a drive. I would say where are we going ? She would say she just wanted to go for a drive. And I would say that unless I knew what our destination was, I wasn't going, and often we didn't. I did not understand that her love language was quality time. This book has certainly helped me to understand my wife better, and we are approaching 35 years of marriage, and this book's teachings has helped us get there.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Five Love Languages of Mates The subtitle of this book is, "How to Express Heartfelt Commitment to Your Mate". This book is excellent for anyone in a committed relationship. I think it can only improve the communication that is vital to a successful partnership. The basic premise is that each of us has a primary language that we need to have our "love tank" filled. The five languages are, Quality Time, Words of Affirmation, Gifts, Acts of Service and Physical Touch. For example, if my primarly language is Quality Time and my partner's is Acts of Service, I will probably give him what I like, assuming that his love language is the same. However if it is not, we both may be just missing the mark slightly. It's an easy read and you can take from it whatever you feel is helpful. I heartily endorse it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from at the point of no return... I had initially heard about this book from a coworker, and was so intrigued by its description. Could it really be true? Are there such things as languages of love? In the heat of an argument, I had often told my boyfriend, "Why can't you treat me like I treat you?" -- I did not realize the truth and significance behind that statement. Since that time, my boyfriend and I have reached an unparalleled level in our relationship; our communication, understanding and appreciation for each other is amazing. I had no idea that love could be so sweet.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love doesn't have to be complicated I finally feel the love in my marriage that I had always hoped to find. Understanding and effectively communicating with my mate was becoming increasingly difficult until I learned about the five love languages. I knew we were completely different creatures, but I had no idea why. The wall between us has fallen and I understand what he needs to feel loved. Today, he responds to me in my own love language, and he never even read the book. I'm amazed and enlightened to find communication to be so simple.
