Part Homeless Bird and part Matched, this is a dark look at the near future told through the alternating perspectives of two teens who dare to challenge the system.

In the year 2054, after decades of gender selection, India now has a ratio of five boys for every girl, making women an incredibly valuable commodity. Tired of marrying off their daughters to the highest bidder and determined to finally make marriage fair, the women who form the country of Koyanagar have instituted a series of tests so that every boy has the chance to win a wife.

Sudasa, though, doesn’t want to be a wife, and Kiran, a boy forced to compete in the test to become her husband, has other plans as well. As the tests advance, Sudasa and Kiran thwart each other at every turn until they slowly realize that they just might want the same thing.

This beautiful, unique novel is told from alternating points of view—Sudasa’s in verse and Kiran’s in prose—allowing readers to experience both characters’ pain and their brave struggle for hope.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Gorgeous outlier of dystopian YA Set in the future where India has five boys for every girl, women have turned into a commodity - a prize to be won at a young age through a series of Tests. This book shows just a sliver of the society built from such Tests - three days with a girl who doesn't want to become a wife and a boy who doesn't want to become a husband. Sudasa's chapters are written in phenomenal free verse and take up the majority of the book. Her family rigs the Test to make sure Sudasa's cousin is one of the five boys she must choose from. Sudasa's Nani want her to marry her cousin in order to settle a debt, to keep up a certain reputation, to cage her. Sudasa does not want her cousin or any of the other boys she is presented, despite knowing their futures and their lives rest in her hands. Kiran (Five)'s chapters are in prose, and they show a boy with a purpose - to use the Test to escape the walls confining him, to find his missing amma. 5 to 1 is not about romance (but I kind of found myself shipping Sudasa and Kiran anyway), it is about listening to the one person who's voice matters the most - your own.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful, thoughtful, captivating Captivating and easy read that left me both curious and satisfied. Great book club book that will no doubt stimulate discussion around gender equality and the true meaning of power. Have read many books with alternating points of view, but this one is unique in that it also alternates between verse and prose for the two main characters. Beautifully written. Looking forward to reading more from this author!
