Reviews

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Classic YA Experience with a Sprinkle of Romance I thoroughly enjoyed reading the novel Airborn from beginning to end! The author, Kenneth Oppel took me along a thrilling adventure from when the son of the Aurora airship’s owner steals Matt - the protagonist’s - position in the Aurora airship, to where Matt Cruse undeniably trips in a romance with Kate de Vries, a passenger. I also liked Kate as a character because she was a determined adolescent who strongly wished to follow her purpose and to document a new flying creature that Matt actually referred to himself every now and then in the novel. Kenneth Oppel was amazing at making characters such as Matt Cruse or Kate de Vries and antagonist Szpirglas credible. Therefore, I wasn’t really reminded of the book’s fictionality due to the characters’ actions and words nor the events that took place in the novel. I would definitely recommend this book to anybody interested in an exciting YA adventure or hasn’t really delved into YA novels in the first place, because this entire story felt realistic and simply hard not to marvel at!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This book is amazing The novel Airborn from the author Kenneth Oppel is about a boy named Matt Cruse who worked on the Aurora ship who have dreamed about becoming a cabin boy. In this book Journey, Matt Cruse has to go through the dangerous experience with the strange flying creature and the attack of pirates. There was a part when Matt Cruse was hiding in the kitchen to put the sleeping drug into the pirate’s food which the ship’s chief had made. When Matt Cruse was about to get caught by the pirate, the chief distracted the pirate and saved the little boy. I suggested this Airborn novel to readers that are interested in mysterious and journalist type of book because this book will tell you to climax that you don't expect it to happen. Overall, this Airborn novel seem to be mysterious and strange also romantic at the same time.

The audience that Kenneth Oppel want to write for is young adults from 9-12. There are a lot of adventures going on in Airborn. This book is very catchy because it talks about Matt Cruse a crew member has the life he always dreamed of as a Cabin boy on the Aurora, a luxury passenger airship that sails hundreds of feet above the ocean. Matt had a lot of adventures because one night he meets a dying balloonist who speaks of beautiful creatures drifting through the skies who are completely real and utterly mysterious. The characters in this novel mostly have the same ages. Kate de Vries is another character who is on a quest to prove that the mysterious flying creatures seen by her grandfather. Rated 4 out of 5 by from L.I.K.E Novel Airborn was a great book to read. Main characters in the novel Airborne are Matt Cruse, Kate, Szpirglas, and Bruce. Matt Cruse is a cabin boy in the Aurora. However, Bruce took Matt's junior sailmaker spot and they are going to Sydney. A lot and lots of mysterious adventure begin to happen. Like adventures to find the mysterious flying creatures, and found out how Kate's grandfather. They ran into a problem too, Szpirglas (pirate) tries to attack the Aurora. Kate was creditable to believe because there are still rich people like Kate and Kate is a woman gets discriminated, so it relates to the history too... A lot of adventures and thrills and twits happens!! Personally, I like the character Kate because she is rich and has charisma. Also, Kate has an intelligent brain and has an interesting personality. In conclusion, the book was pretty fascinating and little twist of the romance.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Best book! I read a novel called “Airborn” which is an adventure. This book is written by Kenneth Oppel and an Imprint of Harpercollins publishers. This novel book is about Matt Cruse life. The life he has always dreamed of like a cabin boy on the Aurora. One night he meets a dying balloonist who speaks of beautiful creatures drifting through the skies who are completely real and utterly mysterious. I like that this novel book was an adventure and it was really interesting. The main character is Matt Cruse who was perched atop the crow's nest, being the ship's eyes. He is 12 years old, however, he’s really courageous and weak. Matt Cruse had run into lots and several times of problems, mysterious, and adventure. My favorite character was Kate. Kate is really kind, nice, but sometimes, she's charismatic and a bit of bloodthirstiness. Before I start to read this book, I thought this book will be too long and boring, but when they fell into adventure and mysterious, it was interesting to read, and I read this book faster than other books.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I liked it! I read an adventurous novel called, “Airborn”, written by Kenneth Oppel. The novel, Airborn is about a sailmaker life in the Aurora. The book Airborn was published in 2004 and it was the top ten best book for young adults. There are lots of problems happening during traveling around the world. The main character is Matt Cruse, he is 12 years old but he is very weak and light. Matt is working as a sailmaker doing lots of supporting to the Airship( serving food, tour, holding luggage). There are lots of situation which makes your heart bump while reading the chapter. I really liked reading the novel because it is very adventurous and I also learned how life is being in the past. I really like the character, Matt because he is very brave and never gives up to achieve his goal. Not giving up was amazing to read. I felt the novel would take us long to finish the book but it was too bad that it finished fast.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Best of the Best Books Recently, I read a novel which was written by an author of internationally, best-selling silver trilogy, Kenneth Oppel. It was a book called Airborn, it's a book about an adolescent called Matt Cruse working and falling in love with a girl named Kate de Vries in an airship called Aurora. Matt was the cabin boy who is small and as light as air. Kate was a passenger who is curious about her grandfather’s death and the strange creature in her grandfather's diary. Airborn is a book that tells us how an adolescent experience hardships at a young age. The part when Matt gets jealous because it was humorous and Matt acted like he's not even though it can easily be spotted by how he talks. Airborn is a type of book would be perfect for someone who's an adventurous and romantic person. Airborn is a very fascinating book to read.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A review after reading this book with our class Our class really liked this book! For the past 2 or 3 months, we read the novel “Airborn”, which is the book that the author Kenneth Oppel wrote. I think this book is very good for young people to read because It has a unique story of an adventure of a cabin boy called Matt Cruse, and a passenger who is called Kate de Vries, finding a flying creature. I also like this book because this book have some characters that are pretty easy for the target audiences to relate with because the main characters have similar age with them. However, I think the book is a little bad for the target audience too because it gets a little violent at the end. I also think that the book is a little bad for kids because there are some words that are in the book which are a little bit hard for them, so they might not understand some words in the sentence. However, this book is a very good book and our class really enjoyed it, and would also like to read another book of this author if we have a chance.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great! Airborn by Kenneth Oppel. A fiction novel about a cabin boy named Matt Cruse, who met a passenger, Kate De Vries. Matt and Kate were on a journey to find the amazing creatures that Kate’s grandfather, Benjamin Molloy talked about in his book. Then, they ran into a lot of problems. Follow them on their journey and read Airborn to find out! Airborn is an incredible book, the way Kenneth Oppel wrote it made it seem very interesting and intense. I definitely recommend this book. My favorite character was Matt because he has a great personality and he can be very relatable sometimes. If you’re in the age range of 10-15 you’ll definitely enjoy the book a little more but if you’re older or younger, still give it a try!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Airborn Airborn is and will probably always be one of my favourite adventure stories. Dissatisfied with adult and young adult fiction, I tend to turn to tween books to quench my thirst for adventure stories. Unfortunately, they are sometimes too simple to truly enjoy. Airborn is more for older tweens- easy to understand, but with enough complexity that an adult can enjoy it too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One Word: Incredible Kenneth Oppel has spun a yarn that yet again exceeds my expectations! Airborn was the first book I read that Kenneth Oppel wrote and I have to say, it left me craving for more of his fantastic literature. For me, Airborn has magical qualities and holds a special place in my heart because of Kenneth's ability to blend a heap of adventure, breath-taking suspense and a pinch of romance all into an amazing story: Matt Cruse is the cabin boy of the Aurora, the 900-foot luxury airship he has called home for the past two years. While crossing the Pacificus, he fearlessly rescues the unconcious pilot of a crippled hot air balloon. Before he dies, the balloonist tells Matt about the fantastic, impossible creatures he has seen flying through the clouds. Matt dismisses the story as the ravings of a dying man, but when Kate de Vries arrives on the Aurora a year later, determined to prove the story true, Matt finds himself caught up in her quest. Then one night over the middle of the ocean, deadly air pirates board the Aurora. Far from any hope of rescue, Kate and Matt are flung into adventures beyond all imagining . . . Rated 5 out of 5 by from Another great book by Oppel It was weird going back and reading the first book in this trilogy after reading the third novel, but it was well worth it. In this story, set in an alternative world where airplanes were never developed and airships still rule the skies, Kenneth Oppel has created an amazing world, full of adventure and wonder. The story focuses around a trip from Lions Gate to Australia aboard the ship Aurora. Young Matt Cruse and Miss Kate de Vries meet on this journey. In this story we have pirate attacks, ship wreck, an uncharted island, undiscovered species and much, much more. With amazing characters and plot twists I could not put the book down. It is a great read and another awesome book by Mr. Oppel.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A new adventure- a new world... To tell you the truth, I was a little hesitant to pick up Airborn. I had seen it on the shelves in bookstores for a while now, but the cover did not appeal to me; I thought it looked like a guy's sort of "fast car chase mystery detective" novel. I was wrong, and I am so glad I was! 'Airborn' is an amazing new story set in a fascinating world that is familiar to us, yet mysterious and different. A science fiction with a dash of fantasy, this book makes for a wonderful read. Kenneth Oppel introduces us to this world and the characters slowly; like your watching a someone woodcarving, and though for some books this may be a drawback, Oppel does it correctly. The reader becomes so well acquainted with the story and the heroes, its as if we are reading our OWN story. Though I usually hate the style of writing this book is written in, Oppel yet again does it correctly, and I love it here. It is very tricky to write in the first person, but he has mastered it beautifully! Once the action picks up, all the little details that were mentioned before fall into place in your head. Soon the adventure becomes quite fast-paced with many things happening at once, yet it is easy to keep track of everything, as the story has been well-grounded. I highly recommend this book, and I cannot wait to read the second installment!
