about

Welcome to Neo-Tokyo, built on the ashes of a Tokyo annihilated by a blast of unknown origin that triggered World War III. The lives of two streetwise teenage friends, Tetsuo and Kaneda, change forever when paranormal abilities begin to waken in Tetsuo, making him a target for a shadowy agency that will stop at nothing to prevent another catastrophe like the one that leveled Tokyo. At the core of the agency’s motivation is a raw, all-consuming fear of an unthinkable, monstrous power known only as Akira.

Katsuhiro Otomo’s stunning science fiction masterpiece is considered by many to be the finest work of graphic fiction ever produced, and Otomo’s brilliant animated film version is regarded worldwide as a classic.

This edition includes a new foreword from the author and a postscript from Dark Horse publisher Mike Richardson!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exemplary. Akira is a high-water mark for sci fi manga. It was well ahead of its time and has not aged one bit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Classic Cyberpunk: Part One Akira is the embodiment of the cyberpunk genre, and is a phycological thriller that will keep you invested until the very end. The large format of these volumes is also an excellent upgrade from the norm. If you're looking for sci-fi that is gritty and real, this is a good stop. #plumreviews

Rated 5 out of 5 by from If you've seen the movie you need to read these. The movie was amazing but it was a condense version of the original. Lots of stuff was changed.. if you're a big fan of the movie you need to read the source material. This print offers the bigger pages. You can't go wrong.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Akira Volume One Akira Volume 1 Review Katsuhiro Otomo`s Akira manga series is one of the greatest ever made. There’s nothing like it Akira is a gem and a must buy (for manga fans). The story is set in a post-apocalyptic Neo-Tokyo and follows two biker gangs and their astonishing discovery of a military secret. The production of Akira is superb, sharp clean art, a deep story, and enough novels to grasp the detail Katsuhiro Otomo wanted. I can literally think of nothing that disappointed me in this series other than it ending (which is inevitable). The story telling is paced flawlessly and has fantastic synergy with the artwork. Akira was later made into an animated film which shortened the six volumes (each with around 360 pages) into one two hour film. I find the number of conversations created by Akira’s story very intriguing and well deserved. Honestly it’s science fiction at its best; if you are looking for an experience you won’t forget read it. Character development, multiple parallel plot lines, calling this a masterpiece would be an understatement. 10/10
