They were made to forget. But they'll never forgive.
Everything about Anna's life is a secret. Her father works for the Branch, at the helm of its latest project: monitoring and administering treatments to the four genetically altered boys in the lab below their farmhouse. There's Nick, solemn and brooding; Cas, light-hearted and playful; Trev, smart and caring; and Sam . . . who's stolen Anna's heart.

When the Branch decides it's time to take the boys, Sam stages an escape. Anna's father pushes her to go with them, making Sam promise to keep her away from the Branch,at all costs.
On the run, with her father's warning in her head, Anna begins to doubt everything she thought she knew about herself. She soon discovers that she and Sam are connected in more ways than either of them expected. And if they're both going to survive, they must piece together the clues of their past before the Branch catches up to them and steals it all away.
Jennifer Rush began telling lies at the age of five and was immediately hooked. Fiction was far better than reality, and she spent most of her teens writing (about vampires, naturally). She currently lives in Michigan with her husband and two children and enjoys eating ice cream in her spare time.Alteredis her debut novel.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Your typical YA story This is a typical YA dystopian novel, filled with dramatics, government conspiracy, and teen angst. I don't plan on reading the rest of the series.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very addicting I wasn't expecting it to be a book I didn't want to put down, but it was. I had no big issues with the story (aside from Anna being okay with having people locked in a lab under her house. Totally fine with you Anna? Oh, okay then.). I also never thought I would find a story like this fun to read but I was also wrong about that. Although most of the story is just a chase, it's never boring and the mystery of who they are and why it's happening to them keeps you guessing. Also some pretty good action bits thrown in. Overall a very entertaining book and definitely worth reading.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Why don't I have the next book yet? Anna lives with her dad, a scientist who is part of The Branch's program. He's in charge of monitoring four boys who have been biologically altered. When The Branch come to pick up the boys, they end up escaping and taking Anna with them. She finds out more about this company and helps the boys find out what they have lost. I really liked how action packed this one is. Considering the boys are are supposed to altered to be assassins I'm guessing they know every way to disarm someone and it shows in the fight scenes. Something Rush does very well. As for the characters, I just like Chase so much. He has the sarcastic wit that I love, and he always wants to eat. He's pretty much the laughing track of the entire novel. As for the main character, I liked Anna, but one minute Anna wants to be strong and fierce and the next second she's bawling because her mother doesn't know her? She doesn't know the whole story yet she jumps to conclusions anyway. It bothered me a lot. But I can forgive her for being a little self-centered. Here's to hoping she will grow up. There's something about Jennifer Rush's writing that makes you want to keep going until the last page is read. Her characters are full of vibrant personalities, and the action gutted me because there was so much. The story moves along very well and I wasn't bored at all. Can't wait to pick up the next one in the series. Why don't I have the next book yet?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An Excitingly Captivating Thrill-Ride! "Altered" by Jennifer Rush is an action-packed science fiction thriller with a large dose of romance and mystery that begins in a hidden laboratory underneath a farmhouse in Treger Creek New York. Four genetically-altered boys have been incarcerated by " The Branch", a covert experimental unit of the government. With their memories erased except for the five years they've been imprisoned Sam, Cas, Trev and Nick have nothing to look forward to except their treatments, and the tests to determine the extent of their extraordinary capabilities. Or so they think. When Connor the charismatic head of the Branch decides to move them to another facility Sam plans an escape. What he doesn't expect is that Arthur Mason, the scientist in charge of Project Alpha will coerce his daughter Anna into going with them. Because of a deep connection between Anna and the teens, they vow to protect her not realizing that her past is as much a secret as theirs. In a race to find clues to the mystery of their identities and to understand the purpose behind their medical-engineering before Connor and his undercover operatives chase them down the five travel across country, seeking sanctuary in safe houses until they're betrayed by one of their own. The plot is well-written, the intensity mounting in a roller-coaster ride of intrigue and suspense. Skilfully meshed into diary entries, cryptic notes as well as words and numbers in the tattoo on Sam's back are clues that lead the five to unravelling the mystery. Woven into a story of violence, deceit, treachery and fear are elements of unconditional friendship, loyalty, love and deliverance. Even the ending holds a surprise that makes you yearn for the sequel. Like the narrative the characters are as fascinating as they are complex with all their flaws and strengths. Anna Mason is the kind-hearted daughter of Arthur, the lead scientist on Project Alpha. At times she seems very naive seeing no evidence of wrongdoing with the treatments and results of the tests she logs until Connor and his henchmen force her to take a side. With her strength, agility and months of combat classes Anna soon becomes an asset , her strength- of -will and confidence growing. Sam is the leader of the boys, committed to protect them no matter the cost to his own safety. Although drawn to Anna who he knows cares for him deeply, he 's secretive , wary and distant until she wins his trust. Unlike Trev, Cas and Nick, Sam is single-minded in his pursuit of the truth, tough , intense and inventive. Of his friends Cas is easy-going, playful and continually hungry; Nick the snide rebel who hates rules and Trev, clever, witty and affable. Of the dangerous antagonists in this story, Connor the head of the secret organization is ruthless, power-hungry, cold and merciless while Riley, his second-in-command is a blunt, impatient individual who's dogged in his pursuit. All these characters and more add power, drama and intensity to a plot that keeps you riveted from beginning to the end. I thoroughly enjoyed this science fiction thriller and look forward to reading the sequel "Erased."

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Review from Esther's Ever After Altered clearly fits into the science fiction & thriller category of books, and features plenty of action to keep its readers on their toes. And seeing as it features four guys among its cast of main characters, it's unsurprising that Altered also features some romance mixed in there as well! Reasons to Read: 1. Fast-paced action: This is ALWAYS a good reason for me to read a book. I love excitement, and while I'm a reader who can appreciate a thoughtful, slow-paced book I also love them amped up and heart-pounding! It picks up early on in the book and never really stops. Plenty of chase & fight scenes, plot twists, and thrilling moments. 2. Level-headed heroine: Anna is, surprisingly, level-headed and reasonable for a girl thrust into an unlikely (and honestly, pretty implausible) situation. Her entire world (as she's known it) is thrown into chaos and she's left unsure about who she can trust and how to uncover the secrets she's just beginning to uncover. People react to situations differently, but I appreciated the fact that Anna was willing and able to take a step back and tried to think things through objectively. Yet she still comes across as young and scared at times, too. That's a really tricky balance to make, but it makes Anna into a very interesting character. Altered was a fast-paced, quick read for me and although I enjoyed it, it also left me desiring more from it. I think that has more to do with me as a reader though, because I just feel like I've read similar books that won me over more. In one way or another they stood out, and I was hoping for Altered to bring something totally fresh and exciting to the table and it just felt lacking in that area. I did like that Altered was just pulsing with adrenaline (for a book) and that the whole story didn't entirely revolve around romance. There are some incredibly strong friendships in here too, and they're so important to Anna and to the story line. But I definitely wanted more from Altered, which I'm hoping will come through in the next books. ARC received from HBG Canada for review; no other compensation received.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from The Bourne Identity for YA First of all, that cover is gorgeous. The neon green jumps out at you and basically screams to be picked up from the shelf. The four boys, Sam, Nick, Trev and Cas are all such unique characters that it is impossible not to fall for them right away. Some more than other's admittedly, but a few, I won't say which, are so adorable and loveable. Each character is very well developed and the reader gets intimate interactions with each and everyone of them and develops a connection very quickly.  Rush's fast paced writing is extremely exciting and very descriptive. The lab in the basement is a clinical, cold place but the boys, and especially Anna actually make it seem almost comfortable. You almost forget that they are confined to a lab as experiments. And Anna is a really cool character. She has this sense of anonymity that has the reader second guessing everything you may know about the book. She is instinctively a badass but the boys' driven need to protect her is fantastic for the story line as everything unfolds.  Sam, as the leader, is unbelievably badass. A lot clinical but justified in his actions. Trev, as Anna's best friend is the calm one. He thinks things through and can be a voice of reason. Cas is the goofy, fun loving guy who puts a smile on your face every time he comes up in the book. Nick is the character who is the least friendly and the most bitter. He is this great cause of tension- along with almost everything else in this book- between the group that creates a great dynamic. The non-stop action and memory loss throughout the book makes this story into a cool YA Bourne-like novel that was impossible to put down. It was clever and the romance wasn't the dominant factor in the book, which was a refreshing change. In Altered, it is all about the action and the plot twists.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good characters, Great story! One word: swoon. There were WAY too many hot boys in this book that it practically gave me heart palpitations from page one. It was almost too distracting, but in a good way. The premise of the book was initally off-putting for that reason. It just seemed like a way for an author to put a bunch of crazy attractive boys in one room together and have them compete for Anna’s love. Plus the setting seemed like some sort of fetish fantasy. How wrong I was. Even though I liked Nick from the start (I’m so weird, I know), Sam was a great character. He was confused but driven, and still wanted to protect his pseudo-family, comprised of himself, Trev, Cas, Nick, and Anna, the protagonist. Anna constantly wants to prove herself to these boys, as a friend, as someone they could trust, as someone who could defend herself, and could defend them as well. She was willing to help them escape the laboratory in her father’s basement and pursue the answers behind the boys’ amnesia and their genetically altered abilities. The mysteries behind Sam, Nick, Cas, and Trev’s tattoos and other clues are what drives the story forwards. The suspense keeps building and building, and although I called a few aspects of the ending, I was pleasantly surprised where the story left off. There was enough intrigue that I was kept engaged while entertained by each of the characters’ quirks and personalities. I particularly loved reading Cas’ dialogue. He’s smart-mouthed and quick to add a hilarious remark to lighten the tension. While Trev is caring and attentive, Sam serious and brooding, and Nick angry and tense, Cas is able to downplay these clashing personalities, even while he is pegged as the “annoying” one. Anna is also able to handle the boys, even as she learns of their backgrounds as memories and answers to their questions start to surface. One of my main faults was that these personalities were too cut and dry, or too stereotypical. I wished for a little more depth for some of the boys and for Anna, who’s interest in Sam was too grade-school crushy for me. While I don’t think the story would have been as forceful without all these attractive men (who were too attractive, in my opinion), the ultimate unveiling at the end was well-worth the wait. I’m so excited to read the next books, and I highly recommend this one to anyone up for some hot guy action coupled with thrills and secrets.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic!!!! OMG this book was incredible. Go read it. Seriously, this is how I want to leave the review. I don't even know what to say other than what are you waiting for? Altered tells the story of Anna and four boys who have been a part of her life for many years. As the synopsis implies the boys are hidden in a lab run by Anna's father. She has been assisting him with the boys for a long time and they have become her closest friends. This is cause for some tension considering the boys are being held captive by a secret government corporation and all four have no memory of where they came from or who they are. When the boys finally escape and take Anna with them, they find themselves following an obscure set of clues in an attempt to figure out their life. While the concept of memory loss may not be incredibly unique in the world of YA, I believe that as long as the author knows what they are doing with it and where they are going, it can still be a thrilling concept to read about. Jennifer Rush nailed it with Altered. I had no freaking clue what was going on half the time and that was okay. Why did the four boys not know who they were? What happened to them? Were they even human? What does genetically altered even mean? All of these questions were flying through my head as I read. And every time I thought I had an answer, I would totally have it wrong. I loved that about this book. I would think that I had something figured out but Rush would through something in that would leave me reeling. I was never ever bored with this book. In fact I didn't want it to end. I LOVED the characters of Altered and I absolutely loved how they interacted with one another. Anna was a great protagonist, and while some may find her annoying, juvenile, immature, I did not. I thought for the situation she was in her response was pretty reasonable. The boys- Sam, Nick, Trev and Cas, were all great as well. Sam was broody, Nick was moody, Cass was hysterical and Trev was Anna best friend. My favourites (cause of course there are going to be favourites) were Sam- for obvious reasons and Nick. I really liked how Anna and Nick would bicker,I don't know why. Nick would pick on Anna and it would drive her insane and I loved it. I also liked how loyal he was to her in the end. It wasn't that he genuinely did not like her, but in his eyes, she was the enemy's daughter which in retrospect that made her the enemy. Sam, whoa, Sam. I had SUCH a crush on Sam as I was reading this book. He was an alpha male to the max, but he also had a softer sweet side (but it wasn't pathetic). However, Sam was scary. He could snap a guy's neck without even blinking and feel no remorse about it afterwards. It was fantastic. I could totally see why Anna had the hots for him. The romance between the two of them was definitely not the focal point of Altered, but it sure did add to absolute amazingness of it. Over, Altered by Jennifer Rush was an action packed novel that never had a dull moment. I adored this novel and I cannot wait to see what's in store next for Anna and the boys. Read this books guys, you will not be disappointed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Suspenseful & Thrilling from Start to Finish! It's very hard to believe that Altered is only Jennifer Rush's debut novel! Altered was fast-paced and action-packed from start to finish, and played out like a suspenseful movie in my head. It's definitely an amazing and thrilling novel you don't want to miss reading! Sam, Nick, Cas and Trev have been genetically altered by the Branch, and for years, they've been kept in separate rooms in the lab below Anna's farmhouse while her father studies the effects of administered treatments. When the Branch suddenly sends agents to take them away, Anna helps the boys escape and flees her home with them. With no memories of their lives before the lab, Anna aids the boys in finding clues about their past and learns she's more connected to them than she could have ever imagined... Sam is the leader of the group who has also captured our heroine's heart (and mine!). There's a quiet intensity about him which I found just as mesmerizing as the fact that he always has his guard up. Anna regards Trev as her closest friend, and he's a source of comfort to her when she doubts herself. Cas is playful and bursting with energy, and also breaks tense moments with comic relief. Nick may be pessimistic and begrudgingly accepts Anna's presence, but he's very loyal to his friends. If I had to be on the run from a secret, dangerous organization, then there's no better company than four smoldering hot boys such as Sam, Nick, Cas and Trev who I would want around to protect me. Anna was fortunate to have them watching her back! There's an important reason why her father insisted that Sam hide Anna away from the Branch, and I was driven mad with curiosity to learn the answer. Everything Anna believes in will be shaken as the truth is revealed and shocking betrayals are discovered. I really didn't want the book to end and even attempted to read it more slowly so I could prolong turning to the last page. Oh, who am I kidding? I totally rushed through Altered because it was too addicting to put down! I absolutely cannot wait to read the sequel. Jennifer Rush's Altered will no doubt remain among my best reads of 2013 by the end of the year. You can also read this review at:

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Action Packed Hotness In this Amazing debut by Jennifer Rush, Altered was fast paced, romantic, thrilling and you will not be able to put this book down. I loved all the boys in this book, and it made me want my own Sam, Nick, Cas, and Trev!! This is an amazing book which will make your heart go crazy because of how Jennifer, constructed her characters as well as the plot. Altered is definitely a must read for 2013! It was also one book I love because throughout the entire book, it made me think of why this group wants to test these groups of boys for experiments. From the cover to the book itself it was amazing! Altered is taken from Anna point of view whose father works for the Branch who is taking care of the boys whom are the projects. Sam, Cas, Nick, and Trev, who are both attractive and smart. Each one is different than the other, but they also want to escape the Branch. Anna discovers them at a young age and befriends them, especially Sam. Soon after the boys and Anna escape from a surprise visit of the Branch initiatives. Anna along the ways learns new things about the boys and even herself and how she fits into their world. I loved the twists and turns that will leave you hanging and wanting more information because you manage to piece together the mystery of the Branch as well as Anna and Sam. There of course has to be a romance and this romance is starting to grow and fall in love. Sam is a very complex character and there is so much about him and his motives and the mysteries of his tattoos. I expect more romance in the next book between these two. I did like Anna's character as she was adjusting her self and the boys. It gave her a role and a reason to be with all of them because they had a family vibe between herself and Cas, who is a total sweetie. Nick was also another complex one because he is more of the cold hearted one who wants to get revenge on everyone and wants to remember all their pasts. The twists closer near the ending were OMG moments that you never see coming! I like a book that surprises me with a plot twist. Altered is action-packed, romance, and the main characters on the run from the Branch. The secrets and mysteries will hopefully be revealed in the next books because I need more!! Overall it is definitely one of my favorites of 2013 and I will definitely be looking forward to the next books in the series!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love It! OMG what to say about Altered. It has been a long time since I was so well entertained by a book. From start to finish Altered drug me in and kept me spell bound. I loved every minute of it. The plot was well thought out and the characters full bodied. Altered will keep you guessing and put your imagination to the test. It was a roller coaster of a ride filled with mystery, action and just the right touch of romance. I can say, which I am sure you all know, I am big on romance. While Altered did not have a ton of romance , the times when there was a sexy scene it was well placed it never felt like the author was just adding it to keep us happy. Anna and Sam's relationship is not insta love. Sure Anna has feelings for him but we are left wondering if they are returned. Now that is not saying that they are not involved with each other, because they are. Just not in the OMG I WILL LOVE YOU FOREVER type of love from page one. Altered is realistic, dealing with real human emotion not buying into the soul-mate hype. Not that I don't love a good soul-mate book, because I do. But it is nice every once in a while to have something refreshing where characters are not sure where they stand with each other. And that is exactly what you will find while reading Altered. First off we have Anna, a somewhat shy, caring, lovable girl. Anna is a multi dimensional character. There are so many sides to her. One minute she is caring for "her boys" and the next she is kicking some serious butt. She definitely gives off the mama bear feeling, well except where Nick and Sam are concerned. So we have the nice sweet side of Anna but don't let that fool you into thinking she's a push over. Oh heck no, this girl can give as good as she gets. There is one particular scene in Altered where we see a different side of Anna, one that will leave you no doubt that she can take care of herself. Anna is a one bad ass heroine. Love her! Ah Sam, my my aren't you full of secrets, too bad even you don't know what they are ;) hehe. I found it very interesting that these "boys" don't have their memories. It makes for one truly great plot line when even the characters are left wondering what the heck they are doing or where they need to go. Sam is the leader of this group of trained killers, he is their strength, what holds them all together. I do see why Anna is drawn to him. Sam is an alpha from his head all the way to his toes. I think I would follow him anywhere. Now Sam and Anna, sigh. They do make a great couple, but I am left wondering if they will make it through. There is just so many things against them, including Sam's past. I believe it will all work out in the end, I just wonder how epic it is all going to be. Nick, here's your bad boy ladies! Anna and Nick are like oil and water. Though it seems to be one sided really. Nick has some serious hatred for Anna and though she doesn't hate him she doesn't treat him any different than any of the rest of the boys. Even if he does act like a jerk. I just wonder if maybe, just maybe that there is something a little more going on here than what meets the eye. Hmmmm. Cas, the easy going , make you laugh and groan at the same time guy. I loved Cas. Cas and Anna kinda remind me of having a brother and sister relationship. They care for each other but I don't feel any tension, which is something Anna really needs if she is going to survive the whirlwind. Ah, Trev... Trev is the shy bookworm. Anna's best friend. They have a loving respectable bond that holds strong. I hope that that continues in the next installment. Anna needs these boys as much as they need her. Altered was one wicked ride. I will say that though some of the plot was obvious there was more that was not. Several times I was like OMG that did not just happen. One revelation left me totally reeling, but begging Jennifer for a hope of redemption. Please :) There is so much to Altered I just can't put it all into my review. I loved it, I mean everything about it. There is nothing I didn't like. Seriously, even the bad guys I liked, especially when they were getting their butts handed to them. Altered will leave you wondering, yes I am going to say it... just how far does this rabbit hole go ;) This book will be joining my favorites shelf. One thing though, if the next installment is anything like the previous one, I am in for one heart stopping thrill ride. I can't wait. I just hope my heart can take it! Bottom line, if you have not read Altered, do it now! Now! What are you waiting for?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from HOLY COW! this as AWESOME! Wow! OMG! Wow!! I know, that's not the most eloquent way to start a review but... WOW! This book left me speechless. It's been a while since I last read a book that made me stop everything in my life to read it and I couldn't even go to sleep without dreaming about this book. Altered by Jennifer Rush is highly addictive! Altered is an extraordinary debut novel. 2013 is the year of genetic modifications and thrillers in the YA world. Several releases on this genre are coming out this year, but Altered is the one you should be picking up. This debut novel is extraordinary! In fact, Altered sets a super high standard for this genre! The Characters Anna: The story is told from her point of view and I must say that the voice was flawless. I think she was the perfect heroine and any of the questions I had during this novel, they were perfectly answered making this character 100% believable. For me Anna was perfect! Sam: Oh sweet Virgin Mary in heaven! Sam is right up there with Dimitri Belikov! YES! I, Natalia Belikov, believe that SAM is as hot and bad-ass as DIMITRI! My dear fellow readers, here is the ultimate crush that we've been longing for! Swoon! scream! dance! jump up-and-down! drool and write Sam's name all over your dear diary because he totally deserves it! Oh! and did I say that his fighting skills and intelligence are out of this world? Yeah, he's altered and super hot! Trev: He's the best friend, the sweet guy, the shoulder to cry on and the one to share all of your secrets with. He is just amazing! He is also a kick-ass fighter and has photographic memory! Ask him a quote for any moment you are going through, and he'll always come up with the perfect one! Cas: Blond, hot and fun! Cas is the one to bring those hilarious moments when the situation most requires it. He lightens the mood and dissipates the hostility that so often we encounter in this dangerous adventure. Nick: This dude you hate him as much as you love him. He is amazing as the rest of the guys, but brings to the team the "doubt" factor. You never really know what to expect from this dude. Is he good? bad?WTH! Holy Trinity! Sam, Trev, Cas and Nick are concentrated hotness and badassery of the highest caliber! And Good God, I'm sure this manly team will gather thousands of swooning fans! These guys are totally part of the hottest things of this novel. However, I would not be fangirling (well...yes, but not that much) over this phenomenal debut novel if it wasn't for the extremely thrilling plot! The Plot Anna was only 13 years old when she discovered, in her home, the underground where her father worked . That's when she fist met the guys. Unfortunately, didn't allow her to go to the lab again, until a few years later her father asked her to help him out with the lab. Now, it's been five years since the four boys arrived to the lab and The Branch (the organization that runs test on the boys) is showing up claim them back. Then, the plot just keeps unfolding and tones of twist and turns come in the way. There is so much I never saw coming. The tension and thrilling intrigue kept me turning pages with no stop! And when I turned the last page, I immediately wanted to go back to the first one and read Altered all over again. Oh yes, it's THAT good! I think I will never get tired of recommending this book. So go read it now! Altered is pure awesomeness and badassery at its best! And believe me, the best way to start this upcoming 2013 is by picking up this book! So get ready for a huge amount action, sexyness, intrigue, and jaw-dropping twists!! Altered delivers!

"Jennifer Rush's debut had me turning pages long into the night. Thrilling and suspenseful, Altered surprised me in the best possible way."-Michelle Hodkin, author of The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer
