Rated 5 out of 5 by from My go to cook book I have had this book for years and used it so much that I am thinking of replacing it. (the cover is coming off and the pages are stained with food) Sadly I see it is no longer available. In my opinion this was one of those really great cookbooks!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My "Desert Island" Cookbook I love cookbooks....a small addiction. I really trust and use Canadian Living and America's Test Kitchen almost exclusively. However, this book is the one I go back to again and again. The recipes are perfect and so many of my families favourites. They include the Greek salad, the best Caesar salad you'll ever make, great soups and perfect pancakes. I love the charts for things like turkey soup with leftovers or roasting vegetables. So many recipes have great options. Tuna (yes, tuna) chowder is a huge family favorite and just an option for the fish chowder. The recipes are also simple and the ingredients easy to find. I've had this book for years (over 10 I'm sure) and still isn't dated. You will not be disappointed. Sadly, binding is poor but...it's the only way they publish it now. If you can get a hardcover in good shape...grab it.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Meh It's perfectly fine, but not great. As usual, it leans bizarrely heavily on two of my most hated ingredients: cinnamon and mushrooms. Someone at Canadian Living thinks that there is no recipe that cannot be improved by mushrooms or cinnamon, or for all I know, both. The previous incarnation of this book, by a different author, was far superior.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Kitchen Must Have!!! This is an amazing cookbook, a must have for anyone who enjoys cooking. I have tried many recipes from this book and have had rave reviews from my family and friends. This cookbook offers basic information and tips such as a guide on vegetables (how to and how long to roast, boil, steam and bake them) simple reciepes and some more complex ones. I also enjoy the variations that many of the recipes come with. These recipes work out all the time and I feel confident when I try a new recipe from the book. I have bought a few friends this book and they have nothing but good thins to say about it. I highly recommend it to anyone.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The most useful cookbook I own I have used this cookbook so often it is in tatters! I've bought copies for each young adult as they leave home. It has every basic recipie any family needs to eat - as well as some great ethnic ones. I always bring this book when we go to the cottage so I can still bake and cook from scratch. If you want to buy one cookbook this shoud be it.

Most recipes use ingredients that you have in your kitchen and pantry. As these recipes are 'tested til perfect' in the Canadian Living kitchens, they always turn out fabulous. I would recommend giving this book as a gift, and buying one for yourself! I use it weekly>

Two-Cheese Tomato TartCelebrate summer with a tomato-topped tart underpinned with creamy Fontina and stretchy mozzarella.Ingredients3 Sheets phyllo pastry1/4 cup (50 mL) Butter, melted1/3 cup (75 mL) Dijon mustard3 oz (90 g) Mozzarella cheese, thinly sliced3 oz (90 g) Fontina cheese, thinly sliced2 Tomatoes, thinly sliced1 Large clove garlic, minced2 tbsp (25 mL) Chopped fresh oregano (or 2 tsp/10 mL dried)2 tbsp (25 mL) Olive oilSalt and pepperPreparation1. Cut each sheet of phyllo in half crosswise; lay 1 half on tea towel, keeping remaining halves covered with damp towel. Brush sheet with melted butter. Place another sheet over the first, making sure edges are not perfectly aligned; brush with 1 tbsp (15 mL) of the mustard. Roughly layer remaining sheets, alternating butter and mustard, and ending with mustard. Gently lift into 14-3/4-inch x 4-1/2-inch (37.5 x 11.5 cm) rectangular flan form with removable bottom. Spread remaining mustard on top. Fold phyllo edges under to create ruffled effect.2. Cover with layer of mozzarella and Fontina cheese. Arrange tomato slices on top, overlapping them in long rows. Sprinkle with garlic, oregano and olive oil. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Place form on baking sheet and bake in 375 F (190 C) oven for 35 to 40 minutes or until phyllo is golden. Makes 4 servings (you can also serve this tart as an appetizer to serve 8)Creamy Pumpkin PieYes, this pie is old-fashioned, but no other dessert is so connected to the memories of romping in golden fall leaves, country drives and our beloved Thanksgiving.1-1/2 cups (375 mL)all-purpose flour2 tsp (10 mL) finely grated orange rind1/2 tsp (2mL) salt1/4 cup (50 mL) each cold butter and shortening, cubed1 egg yolk1 tsp (5 mL) vinegarIce waterFILLING:1 can (14 oz/398 mL) pumpkin purée1 cup (250 mL) packed brown sugar1 pkg (4 oz/125 g) cream cheese, softened1/2 cup (125 mL) whipping cream2 eggs1 tbsp (15 mL) all-purpose flour1 tsp (5 mL) each cinnamon and vanilla1/2 tsp (2 mL) each ground ginger, nutmeg and saltTOPPING:1/2 cup (125 mL) whipping creamIn large bowl, combine flour, orange rind and salt. Using pastry blender or 2 knives, cut in butter and shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. In measuring cup, whisk egg yolk with vinegar; pour in enough ice water to make 1/3 cup (75 mL). Drizzle over flour mixture, tossing with fork until dough holds together and adding a little more ice water if necessary. Form into ball; press into disc. Wrap in plastic wrap; refrigerate for 1 hour.On floured surface, roll out pastry to 1/8-inch (3 mm) thickness; fit into 9-inch (23 cm) pie plate. Trim edge to 3/4 inch (2 cm) overhang, reserving scraps; fold edge under and flute. Prick shell all over. Refrigerate for 30 minutes.Line pastry shell with foil; fill evenly with pie weights or dried beans. Bake in bottom third of 375°F (190°C) oven for 15 minutes; remove weights and foil. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes longer or until pastry just starts to turn golden.FILLING: Meanwhile, in food processor, purée together pumpkin purée, sugar, cream cheese, whipping cream, eggs, flour, cinnamon, vanilla, ginger, nutmeg and salt. Pour into pie shell; bake in bottom third of 350°F (180°C) oven for 1 hour or until set around edge and slightly jiggly in centre. Let cool on rack.(MAKE-AHEAD: Cover and refrigerate for up to 8 hours.)TOPPING: In bowl, whip cream. Pipe or spoon into 8 rosettes around edge.
