about

Research scientist Kate Adams and her colleague Daisy are on the brink of a breakthrough for treating depression with herbal medicine when Daisy suddenly dies. Kate knows that if it hadn't been for Daisy's mentorship, she wouldn't have the job she loves or the faith she clings to. So when police rule Daisy's death a suicide, Kate is determined to unearth the truth.

Former FBI agent Tom Parker finds it hard to adjust to life back in his hometown of Port Aster. Though an old buddy gives him a job as a detective on the local police force, not everyone approves. Tom's just trying to keep a low profile, so when Kate Adams demands he reopen the investigation of her friend's death, he knows his job is at stake. In fact, despite his attraction to her, Tom thinks Kate looks a bit suspicious herself.

As evidence mounts, a web of intrigue is woven around the sleepy town of Port Aster. Can Kate uncover the truth? Or will Tom stand in her way?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Deadly Devotion A terrific murder mystery with a Christian base is hard to find and this one is very well written. The thought of a beloved Christian friend taking her own life doesn't sit well with the community but with the police not willing to investigate how far will a friend have to go to prove it was murder.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Deadley Devotion This is a nice murder mystery. I enjoyed the characters very much. It did take a long investigation but it was worth it in the end.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Kept me guessing all the way through! This is the first book of Sandra Orchard’s that I've ever read. It was fantastic. She did a marvelous job of crafting a twisting and tangling suspense-mystery novel. She had so many suspects in this story and presented just enough about each of them that they were definitely believable as the murderer. I didn't know right up until the end who was the culprit. I loved both of the main characters, Kate Adams and Tom Parker. They were incredibly well developed and presented. The secondary characters were also well developed. I thoroughly enjoyed the relationships between the different characters. I will definitely be reading more books by this author.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Read This! Tom and Kate are well developed characters. I enjoyed getting to know both of them. Tom and Kate both have a strong desire to see justice done-wrong doing brought to light even at the expense of their reputations in the town of Port Aster. The supporting characters are also well developed and have some depth to them. Storyline was interesting and moved along at a good pace. I enjoyed this book very much. Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great new supsense series! "Kate knows the truth is out there--but if she's right, that means a killer is out there too. Research scientists Kate Adams and Daisy Leacock were on the brink of a breakthrough for treating depression with herbal medicine when Daisy was suddenly found dead. Kate knows that her mentor's death wasn't suicide or a careless accident--and she's determined to do whatever it takes to unearth the truth about what happened to the woman who changed her life. Former FBI agent Tom Parker is finding it hard to adjust to life back in his hometown of Port Aster. Though an old buddy gave him a job as a detective on the local police force, not everyone approves. Tom's just trying to keep a low profile, so when Kate Adams demands he reopen the investigation into her friend's death, he knows his job is at stake. But despite his attraction to her, Tom thinks Kate may have something to hide. As evidence mounts, a web of intrigue is woven around the sleepy town of Port Aster. Can Kate uncover the truth? Or will Tom stand in her way?" I really enjoyed reading this book. There were quite a few twists and turns throughout that kept the reader guessing. I loved the character of Kate Adams. She is so full of spunk and tenacity. She's the only one in town who believes that her friend did not die by suicide and does her best to try to convince the police. Ms. Orchard did a wonderful job of keeping me guessing as to who did it. The ending left me wanting more, and I cannot wait for the next book in the series! Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent! Loved this book! Can't wait for the others in this series! I just have to know how it all turns out! I also love learning new things, and this book did not disappoint with its factoids about herbs! This book would make an excellent read for a book club! With so many suspects and home remedies, it could entice lots of conversation! I highly recommend it!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fun New Series Deadly Devotion is a murder mystery plot delivered as romantic suspense. There are at least three very plausible suspects, and they kept me guessing until very near the end. Even then, I guessed right but for the wrong reason. Sandra Orchard creates complex characters whose personalities shape how they react to the story unfolding around them. In Deadly Devotion, Kate sees the best in people—well, everyone other than the police—and she has no idea how to recognize a villain. Tom, on the other hand, deals with flashbacks and what looks like post-traumatic stress syndrome from his former FBI work. It's hard for him not to see threats and deception all around. I appreciate how Kate and Tom integrate their Christianity into the grief and suspense they encounter in the novel. Sometimes it comes up in their conversation, but usually it's just the force shaping how they view their world and how they act within that world. This is one of those novels where each chapter hooks you into the next one without stopping. Suspense balances with quieter scenes for an intriguing read without the high intensity of a thriller. It's well-crafted, with some fresh descriptions. Deadly Devotion marks Canadian author Sandra Orchard's first step into longer-length novels (she also writes the shorter Love Inspired Suspense novels). She handles the longer format well, and I prefer them. I'm looking forward to book two in the Port Aster Secrets series. The murder mystery was solved, but there are questions from Kate's past, among other things. You can find a sample chapter, deleted scenes, interviews with Kate and Tom, and more on the Book Bonus Feature of Sandra Orchard's website. You can also interact with Sandra on Facebook. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Romantic Suspense A book to be devoured with zeal! Orchard is a welcome addition to Revell's Romantic Suspense authors. She has a distinctive style that blends mystery with suspense with punches of humour mixed in. The result? A page-turning read. A clever and fresh plot kept me on my toes but I smugly admit to figuring out whodunit a tad before the intrepid heroine. Yes, I'm patting myself on the back because the author wove a complicated trail of clues and mis-clues that left me reeling. I rallied though, stoic armchair sleuth that I am. :-) Kate and Tom make a good team -- when they aren't at cross purposes, that is. There's attraction and frustration and gentle humour in their developing relationship; the beginnings of a sweet love story that has its bitter moments. Orchard has rooted her characters in reality, drawing on their painful pasts to add depth and plenty of complications to their present. An outstanding first book in the Port Aster Secrets series, Deadly Devotion wraps up one mystery while hinting at more to come. Kate and Tom's relationship solidifies but the author promises much more to their romance. We just have to be patient until the second book in the series comes out sometime next year. I can't wait.
