Rated 4 out of 5 by from Character assessments are the most important decisions in business The co-star of Dragon’s Den on CBC Television, ex-RCMP officer and co-partner of Boston Pizza, has produced a useful story about how you take a company international even if that means expanding from British Columbia in to the Province of Quebec. Any student of the theory of internationalization of firms will recognize the miss-steps and stages this entrepreneur went through to make his company a national brand. Then and only then if you are not in a distinctive niche market do you launch yourself onto the international stage where cross cultural communication is paramount even in the good ole’ USA. Texas is about as foreign as it can get in North America. I especially liked his framework for decision-making (Head, Heart, Gut) and how he put it into action. His management style is action oriented (almost impetuous) as he focuses on the people, more than the product or service the company is trying build and sell. Again a good study in angel investor attributes or any good stock picker. Invest in management, not so much the company. His whole focus on character in decision making is reminiscent of stores about J.P. Morgan when asked about his secret of success in business and how he made such good decisions. JP is reported to have replied that there were few important decisions to be made in business but the most important ones involved character. Jim Treliving seems to have learned this lesson well from his father whom he refers to often in this book. The book is an easy but worthwhile evening’s read as each section is concluded with a summary of the main ideas of what was discussed in the preceding chapter.
