"Probably the best single work on the epic battle of Stalingrad, Germany's World War II Verdun, yet written-and certainly the most revelaing. A magnificent account, comparable to Harrison Salisbury's Nine Hundred Days on the siege of Leningrad, which places its author, William Craig, in the front ranks of contemporary historians. An unforgettable and haunting reading experience." - Cornelius Ryan

"Craig has written a book with both historical significance and intense personal drama, a gripping account of a titanic struggle that was fought street by street, house by house, room by room." - James Michener

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Don't watch the movie... read the book! William Craig has written a book which brings the battle for Stalingrad to life. He puts a very human face on one of the bloodiest battles in the history of mankind. The triumphs and errors of both sides are analysed and well-explained. The military jargon gets a little confusing at times, but don't let this deter you picking this book up.
