Rated 5 out of 5 by from Mind Opening What's interesting about the content is that it seems like common knowledge, but I suppose it's just hindsight. I believe it's important that people learn to reflect on how they think. The way we think affects our every day lives and we don't even realize the extent. This book is a great tool to help start self-reflecting, but keep in mind that it's not there to fix all problems and that more help might be needed. I'm an anxious person mainly because I overthink, and the strategies in the book are helping me realize that some of my thoughts are irrational. It's a slow and difficult process, but it's helping.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My therapist gave this to me I have major anxiety, and coping with it is very difficult since I don't know proper strategies. My therapist recommended this book to me since she says "I like concrete answers" It's honestly terrific. Burns states that the main source of depression is negative and distorted thinking, and he gives you tons of strategies for rewiring your thought processes and catching negative ideas as we think them. I've not finished this book yet, but this book has helped me tremendously and im only on page 100. No, this book is not a cheap replacement for professional help, but it's a serious start & has been studied as creating massive improvement for depressed people. According to Burns, this book pairs best with additional professional help.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A must read for all those struggling with mental illness of any sort I've been diagnosed with depression, and this book was recommended to me by a friend who's a psychiatrist. I instantly purchased the book and began reading, because I couldn't stand being in depression anymore. While this book is not a quick fix for all one's problems (never assume that any book will be that), it has provided me with great insight into how I have been viewing myself. The book uses CBT - Cognitive Behavioural Therapy - to help the reader understand and realize the negative self-talk in which many of us engage. It's remarkable how negative self-talk has been internalized and normalized in our culture. The constant search for approval and love from others impacts the way we see ourselves. This book is not some pep talk or funny read. It is not the lightest read, either, due to the subject matter, but I cannot emphasize how important and excellent it is. It is written by a licensed, qualified, and experienced psychiatrist, and does not undermine or over-inflate matters for the sake of sensationalism or consumerism. The author is well-invested in the reader's well-being just as he is about his own clients.

This book is #1 I personally used this book to help get me through my last major depression and suggest it to all my clients who suffer mood and anxiety, self-esteem, etc.. problems. Although it is written for a depressed or anxious audience, (the examples relate to people suffering these problems) the book can be extrapolated for many other problems. This books provides very specific tools and strategies - apathy, procrastination, criticism, self esteem, anger, fears, suicidal thoughts, and many, many more. Plus there is a questionnaire mid-book with associated chapters to better manage underlying problems i.e. people pleasing, seeking approval, need to be loved, workaholism, problems with self worth, etc... Many of my clients do not suffer mood or anxiety problems but relationship issues at home or work, or many other problems. I often suggest they read chapter 3. Chapter 3 is gold. Understanding the connection between thoughts and moods. If you are a friend or family member of someone suffering mental illness - this book will also help you understand what your loved one is going through.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Feeling Good: The New Mood Therapy Among all other seemingly promising self-help books, Dr. Burn's book is perhaps the best book on overcoming depression. It has covered in details on different kinds of depression as well as effective and immediate ways to combat the disease affecting 20% of the population. It's a long book, so it may be difficult to read if under depression. Trust me, once you finish it, you will thank yourself for forwarding the very first step of self-love and self-help.
