about

In a great green room, tucked away in bed, is a little bunny. "Goodnight room, goodnight moon." And to all the familiar things in the softly lit room—to the picture of the three little bears sitting on chairs, to the clocks and his socks, to the mittens and the kittens, to everything one by one—the little bunny says goodnight.

In this classic of children's literature, beloved by generations of readers and listeners, the quiet poetry of the words and the gentle, lulling illustrations combine to make a perfect book for the end of the day.

This board book edition is the perfect size for little hands.

Few writers have been as attuned to the concerns and emotions of childhood as Margaret Wise Brown (1910-1952). Rated 4 out of 5 by from A vintage feel I know it is a true classic, but I find the text a bit too repetitive. The illustrations have a very vintage feel, which I like.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great book. I remember reading this book as a kid. I remember the colours being really funky. I also remember that while I grew to love this book, I recall the older kids reading it in a spooky voice in the dead of night (at a slumber party). That made the story seem scary. When the teachers read it in class, it was a great book indeed.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Classic We love this book in our family. It's calming and just the right length. The pictures vary from black and white to coloured, which is nice and my son loves to look and see what the little bunny is doing on most pages. It's great for working on rhyming. To keep it interesting, I sometimes change the words and wait until my son corrects me. Goodnight sun and goodnight crocodile, etc. My son knows it by heart so he can confidently "read" it himself. It's also nice and sturdy and has survived SOOOO many reads.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I don't know why we like this book so much. For whatever reason, my lo wants to read this book nearly every night. I don't mind it, but don't really see the appeal either.I like reading it to him because he's starting to recite some of the pages which is cute...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from By far my boys' favorite bedtime story This is my boys' all time favorite bedtime story. We actually had to buy a 2nd as the first book fell apart after years of reading it every night! The boardbook is good quality but my oldest chewed on it and drooled on it and the spine finally let go. Although I no longer need the book to read this because i have it memorized from reading it so often, my boys love to look at the pictures as I go.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Classic This is a book I grew up reading and although I read this to my primary class, they were quick to point out how out-dated the illustrations were which actually lead into a great conversation about different types of art media. Still a classic and one that I hope to keep in my classrooms

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolute favorite and classic!!! BOTh my kids LOVE this book! They actually request it! My 2 y.,o. first words in English was Goodnight Moon! It's a cute story, and w reading it multiple times I ntoiced that the time changes on the clock. There's a mouse that's at a different spot every night, so I make my 4 y.o. read the time, or look for the mouse... and make him finish the sentences... It's truly a very smart book and great last book of the night to read!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A classic and wonderful story Our infant has always enjoyed this book. The colourful pages maintain his attention quite well. He's often anxious to move to the next page, so the concise text is great. As an adult, this is my absolute favourite children's book. The text may not seem like much at first, but the more I read the story the more detail I notice . Yes, it's simple, and yes, there are flashier more modern books. This one is beautiful due to i ts simplicity.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Every parent should have this book for their children I never knew this book as a child but borrowed at a library when my girls were little. It's so charming and sweet and has a lovely rhymic way to the words. My kids wanted it again and again so i ended up giving each one their own copy and subsequently bought many as gifts for friends when their children were small. Margaret Wise Brown is one of the most nostalgic and lovely children book writers ever!! I would definitely recommend this.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Soothing A bit odd, but perhaps that's because it is dated. The bright colours are a bit much for me but I enjoy the black and white. My baby does seem to respond the story itself, I suppose because it is snothing and repetitive, it makes her sleepy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great book Received this as a gift for my son when he was born. To be honest I wasn't interested in it. Maybe because of the illustrations. BUT my son LOVES it! I think it does have something to do with the alteration of colour and black & white of the illustrations. We both really enjoy the wording.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Goodnight Moon (Over the Moon #2) by Margaret Wise Brown, Clement Hurd (Illustrator) The baby bunny is oddly un engaged with a temperamental grandma bunny as he (or she) watches the room grow darker (even though the moon rises). Despite these inconsistencies and occasional strange reading cadences (goodnight nobody? what does that mean), I would recommend book to anyone interested in going to bed at night and suffers from separation anxiety with inanimate objects.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for toddlers! At first I was skeptical about this book, the illustrations were not my taste and I did not think it would appeal to my then 18mos old and 3 year old. I was so wrong. They love it. There are so many things going on in the illustrations and they love pointing things out and seeing the bunny go through a similar bedtime routine as them. The simplicity of language works so well, since now my 3.5 year old has the book memorized and thinks he is reading it. The lap-size board book is perfect since its large size allows both my kids to sit with me in a chair and see exactly what is going on. A classic book and must have for every home.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A classic for a reason! I had heard of this book for years, but didn't remember it from my childhood. When I had my son, I was excited to check it out. On my first read, I didn't love it. But it seemed to soothe him to sleep. So I kept reading it. After a while, I noticed there is a calming rhythm or something to it that works at putting babies to sleep. In fact, as my son got older, he would get upset if I started reading that. (I think he realized it would make him sleep, and like most little ones, he wanted to stay up all night partying!) It became one of my favourite bedtime books.
Date published: 2017-01-31
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great for toddlers This was a first time read when my little one was 2; she ended up memorizing it! It's a good read for the kiddies but you eventually get tired of it..

Rated 1 out of 5 by from A classic that shouldn't be I actually know this one by heart. It's become a part of our family. But it's actually a terrible book - bad rhymes, uninspiring illustrations. On the other hand, it's short. At the end of a long day, I think we chose to read it so often because it was short. But I wish we hadn't - we really could have done better.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Both of my kids love it. My son is now two and he asks for it frequently. My daughter is now five and she doesn't mind reading it with her brother but she did outgrow it when she turned four. She loved it for three years. That's pretty good for a board book.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Skip it. Sweet but a little boring I find this book a little boring although I hear some children love it. It doesn't really have any story or plot, it is really just a series of images/observations in a room. More of a picture book than a real story. Good for very small children/babies.

From Our Editors

Hand picked by our Panel of Experts the IndigoKids Recommends program offers book suggestions designed to help you find the perfect book easily and confidently. In the tradition of the most classic bedtime stories, Goodnight Moon captures the magic of sleepytime with its mesmerizing story and dreamy illustrations. Finding all of the items mentioned throughout the book within the pictures is a good bedtime activity - a reappearing little mouse is particularly pesky. By the end of the little rabbit's goodnight poem, the story has quieted to a whisper, and the drawings have darkened with nightfall. As you turn the last page, you can expect a sleepy smile and at least a happy yawn or two.

Editorial Reviews

"A little rabbit bids goodnight to each familiar thing in his moonlit room. Rhythmic, gently lulling words combined with warm and equally lulling pictures make this beloved classic "an ideal bedtime book." (The Christian Science Monitor)
