Half Broke Horses is Laura Ingalls Wilder for adults, as riveting and dramatic as Isak Dinesen’s Out of Africa or Beryl Markham’s West with the Night. Destined to become a classic, it will transfix readers everywhere.

“Those old cows knew trouble was coming before we did.” So begins the story of Lily Casey Smith, Jeannette Walls’s no-nonsense, resourceful, and spectacularly compelling grandmother. By age six, Lily was helping her father break horses. At fifteen, she left home to teach in a frontier town—riding five hundred miles on her pony, alone, to get to her job. She learned to drive a car and fly a plane. And, with her husband, Jim, she ran a vast ranch in Arizona. She raised two children, one who is Jeannette’s memorable mother, Rosemary Smith Walls, unforgettably portrayed in The Glass Castle.

Lily survived tornadoes, droughts, floods, the Great Depression, and the most heartbreaking personal tragedy. She bristled at prejudice of all kinds—against women, Native Americans, and anyone else who didn’t fit the mold. Rosemary Smith Walls always told Jeannette that she was like her grandmother, and in this true-life novel, Jeannette Walls channels that kindred spirit. Half Broke Horses is Laura Ingalls Wilder for adults, as riveting and dramatic as Isak Dinesen’s Out of Africa or Beryl Markham’s West with the Night. Destined to become a classic, it will transfix readers everywhere.
Jeannette Walls was born in Phoenix, Arizona. She graduated from Barnard College and was a journalist in New York City for twenty years. Her books include the memoir The Glass Castle and Half Broke Horses: A True-Life Novel.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved it! Not surprisingly, Jeannette Walls has written another fantastic novel. I was really excited to read the "pre" to 'The Glass Castle', which I loved. The storytelling is incredible and completely sucks you in. As you near the end of this book, it definitely feels like you're getting closer to the beginning of Glass Castle and I felt myself getting angry all over again. Don't get me wrong - I loved Glass Castle but I spent the majority of the time angry lol You should totally read both and it doesn't really matter in which order you do so.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great story and very well written! I totally forgot that this wasn't her story (it was suggested that I read this before Glass Castle - which is next to read), as she tells it from such a insightful first hand point of view. What an interesting life, and what a tough woman! Some sad realities of the times, but she never gave up - only fought harder for what she wanted. Can't wait to hear more about her daughter and granddaughter!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautifully written, and truly touching This story was so beautiful to read and bittersweet to ponder. Jeannette's memoir will stay with me for a long time. It shows the resilience and brilliance of children and blurs the line between villain/victim. Her writing style is elegant and simple- it lets her incredible story speak for itself. Simply breathtaking.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Memorable Jeannette Walls takes the life of a woman who may seem ordinary at first glance and shows that she has a very clear life and purpose. That takes skill to do.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Captivating read Another great book by Jeannette Walls. I only wish I read it prior to reading Glass Castle, though the story was still captivating and beautifully told. Author's has an outstanding tallent at painting a picture - one can almost 'live' her stories.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Insight Really enjoyed this prelude to Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls. It was a great read and the story gave some real insight into the life that shaped her mother. Really enjoyed the development of her grandmother's character, and loved that Ms. Walls portrayed her with a wonderfully balanced approach. While not as strong as Glass Castle, the author is still a superb story teller.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Another Great Book From Walls What a great novel! Another amazing book from Jeannette Walls. After reading The Glass Castle, I was excited to read this true-life novel and once again I was hooked after the first page. Walls has a way of getting the reader so involved in the story and with the characters that it is hard to put the novel down once you start. Her family stories are entertaining, funny and smart and I look forward to future novels from her. I would recommend this book to everyone, although if I were to choose now I would have read this novel before The Glass Castle (just to read the in chronological order).

The style of chapters or breaks in pages every few pages lends well to short time frames devoted to reading.
