about

Traditions, created, and subverted. Love, nurtured and destroyed. Friendships, marriages, and the wild beauty of Cape Breton Island. And above all, kin, in all its convoluted forms.

In Kin, bestselling author Lesley Crewe traces the tangled lines of loyalty, tragedy, joy, and love through three generations of families. Beginning with Annie Macdonald, an effervescent seven-year-old living in Glace Bay in the 1930s, and ending with Annie's great-niece Hilary, an idealistic twenty-year-old in Round Island in 2000, the story is complex and riveting. The cast of characters is vast and varied-some with the island's deliciously cutting wit, some dour and uptight, some frail, some resilient, and all inextricably bound by their shared histories.

Brimming with humour and poignancy, Kin is a celebration of the heartbreaking, maddening joy that is family.

Lesley Crewe is the author of, Her Mother's Daughter, Hit and Mrs., Ava Comes Home, Shoot Me, and Relative Happiness, which was shortlisted for the Margaret and John Savage First Book Award. Previously a freelance writer and columnist for Cape Bretoner magazine, she currently writes a column for Cahoots online magazine. Born in Montrea...

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Made a good effort Crewe was able to draw me into the life of her characters. She created a great sense of "place" and deep connection to family and the land. Reminded me of my own connection to the place I grew up in. Spanning four generations created alot of characters to try and keep track of. Found that tiring at times. Some of the characters I found superficially portrayed. Wanted to know more about what motivated them in some cases. Crewe left the reader to figure that out which I also appreciated but more character development would have helped me figure that out more. Realize that character development would have made the book longer too so perhaps covering only three generations would have given more time for it.
