about

Little Heidi goes to live with her grandfather in his lonely hut high in the Alps and she quickly learns to love her new life. But her strict aunt decides to send her away again to live in the town. Heidi cannot bear being away from the mountains and is determined to return to the happiness of life with her grandfather. With a delightfully nostalgic introduction by award-winning author, Eva Ibbotson.
Johanna Spyri (1827-1902) was born in Switzerland in the village of Hirzel, which has magnificent views of the Alps. She wrote almost fifty books, but it was Heidi who brought her great fame.

Reviews

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Heidi It held my interest and I did care about Heidi but at the same time she was just a little more perfect than I want in a character. #plumreview

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Sweet I read this book for the first time this year as a 25 year old woman so my review is not based on nostalgia. I was pleasantly surprised by how cute and lighthearted everything was. My favourite parts of the book were all the scenes where Heidi is living on the mountain. The part where she lived in Clara's house in the city dragged a bit, but it was still enjoyable watching Heidi and Clara's friendship develop. This book was published in 1880 so there are things that didn't age well. Clara being referred to as an invalid throughout the book was uncomfortable and how everyone kept trying to make her walk even though it hurt her to do so. Peter's jealousy and possessiveness over Heidi was not cute. He literally broke Clara's wheelchair in anger because he felt like Clara was taking Heidi's attention from him and a quote to excuse this was, "Think, here we are... keeping Heidi away from him for weeks on end - and of course he regarded her as very much his private property - and he has been left all alone to brood on it" (page 283). Like why. And overall nice read with some questionable things that comes with over 100 years of progress.
