Reviews

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Mother Earth and the human parasites Lovelock, one of the world's most important scientific minds, introduces us to Gaia -- the theory that Earth is a conscious self-regulating organism that strives to maximize biodiversity. Humans are parasites that are severely impeding Gaia's ability to promote more numerous diverse life-forms. Lovelock supports his theory with evidence of the virtuous and vicious cycles that fuel our global ecosystems. Humanity's addiction to fossil fuels and the destruction we have wrought on the planet are, he warns, nothing compared to the destruction that Gaia might wreak on us! Lovelock's views are controversial even among fellow ecologists. For example, his embrace of nuclear power as a "soft-landing" solution to get humanity off our fossil fuel addiction has been widely condemned. But his vision of an enduring planet serves as a useful, if dire warning.
