Rated 3 out of 5 by from I can't say I was all that entertained this time around Reason for Reading: Next in the series. Not a lot happens in this volume and I can't say I was all that entertained this time around. A lot of the book is spent with Scott's friends hanging out with Envy's band and all the uncomfortable angst that brings about since Scott used to date Envy, Scott is now dating Ramona, Envy is talking trash to Ramona, Knives would like to kill Envy, Envy is dating Todd. Todd used to date Ramona. And Neil would like his date with Knives to work out tonight. During this time as they all talk and sort of prepare for the gig that evening we are given flashbacks to Scott and Envy's highschool romance; it wasn't much. She dumped him. Then suddenly out of nowhere Scott goes nuts and decides it's time to fight evil boyfriend #3, Todd. Right there and then only problem is he loses since Todd is vegan and has special vegan powers. Well this leads to other stuff and the book finally ends with Scott (not so) looking forward to evil boyfriend #4. I couldn't get into the book this time. Ramona, who I like best, just didn't do much. Scott is certainly not on any sort of track to improve himself at this stage and I think that would be wishful thinking on my part, by this point. The fight scenes were really very dumb so I didn't even enjoy the video game aspect of it this time around. I'm not trashing the book though. It did keep the plot going, kept all the characters involved, had a few good one-liners and at the back of the book Bryan Lee O'Malley includes a small list of his favourite manga at the time. I'd read one series already (Death Note, and loved it) so I looked up the others and found one to add to my "want to read" list Berserk by Kentaro Miura.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Scott Pilgrim 3: They Seek Closure Continuing from where we left off last time, Scott and Ramona were moving forward. Our young slacker hero is finally about to put the kibosh on all those troubles with his past. For those of you who came in late, Scott Pilgrim Volume 3 And The Infinite Sadness is by the esteemed Canadian writer/artist Bryan Lee O’Malley. Scott Pilgrim meet Ramona Flowers. They start dating. Her Seven Evil Ex’s come to town. Chaos and drama ensue. Picking off directly after Volume 2, our couple have to deal both physically and emotionally with Envy and her idiot boyfriend Todd. The negative aftereffects from the debris of Scott and Envy’s past relationship are still ingrained in him over a year later. Tensions that Envy continues to flame, all to watch Scott twist in the wind, punctuate this Volume. All for her sad lonely pleasure. We have all met people like Envy. Their internal loneliness and despair erupts onto everyone else with venomous hatred. They know this. But carry on with little regard to the damage they wrought. Flashbacks illustrate to us the deterioration of Envy’s psyche. A sweet girl who goes downhill and blames Scott for all evil in her life. Scott is, of course, almost totally oblivious till the very end of the relationship. He still spends far too much of his time and energy trying to please the unpleaseable Envy. And to this day, he still doesn’t understand. On the flipside of this reality is the many battles fought. Todd is by far the most formidable opponent thus far, armed with powers far beyond those of mortal men. At this point O’Malley is rapidly expanding the threat levels to Scott, and equally expanding the ingenious ways he gets our hero out of these nasty jams. Ramona joins in with the chaos again, bringing the hammer of truth down on the situation. She is so kickass. Things are finally looking up for our favourite couple by the end of this part of their journey. Happiness finally begins to take root and bloom. Maybe even flower? We shall soon see! And I never liked the the band The Clash At Demonhead. They are so yesterday. Scoopriches

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great book Definitely one of the better books in the series, the friction between Todd & Envy and Scott & Ramona is great. Todd is probably my favorite evil ex, and is one of the most developed exes. In all, great book in a great series.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Fusion Dish - Magna a la Canadian A wonderfully unique Canadian experience. I admit i've never been much of a fan of the Manga genre. I don't know if I'm older than the intended audience or if there's a cultural divide between the Japanese art form and my sensibilities. Scott Pilgrim is a different matter entirely, because I love this comic. Successfully fusing the energetic art of Manga with a North American sensibility Scott Pilgrim is full of pop cultural references galore. This series will put a smile on the face of twenty to thirtysomethings who are fans of indie rock, video games or anime. Younger folk will probably enjoy it too but may miss all the references to the late eighties and ninetiies. People that have lived in Toronto will also get an additional kick out of seeing landmarks and neighbourhoods rendered in the cartoonish but instantly recognizable style. In this volume the "existential horror" of one of the main backdrops will make you laugh out loud if you''ve been the building even once. Brian Lee O'Malley's work on this series evokes Douglas Coupland's work in its understanding of the pop cutural media and youth culture. I highly reccommend this series.
