Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic I could not put down this book Silver Linings by Kate James. Her descriptions of the characters and the surroundings were so fantastic. It was a story that had you feel like you knew the characters personally & you also made you feel for them. It was a combination of sad, happy, smiling & tears. Tears of sadness & tears of happiness. I can not wait for her next novel. I don't mean to compare her to another author, but it was almost like reading a Danielle Steel novel.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Man's View I'm a guy, okay. So, chick lit isn't my go-to genre. But, here's my guilty little secret - I really enjoyed this book (shhh, don't tell my shooting buddies)! Here is what I like about Silver Linings. First, Kate James is an excellent writer. She made it easy for me to visualize the locations and surroundings, which is an important part of the story. Kate made the tropical island of St. Lucia come alive. I could feel the salty air tingle my nostrils, as we sailed across the blue Caribbean. I've been to the Bahamas, and Kate did a great job of helping me relive that experience. As a business traveler, I've stayed at the Plaza Hotel in New York city, and I could feel the dampness in the air as she described the snowflakes falling to the city street below. See what I mean? Kate James has the uncanny ability to put the reader into the scene! But, there's more. James has mastered her craft to be able to put you in the head of her characters. That, my friends, makes for a fun read. On a slightly lighter note, as a man, I had no idea just how important it is for women to nail just the "right look" for the occasion. To borrow and butcher a phrase, I don't know much about style/fashion, but I sure know what I like when I see a female form of beauty. Kate James helped me understand the trials and tribulations my wife must go through on date night! Kate develops her protagonist, Katlyn Monroe, expertly and if I wasn't married already, I would want to start working out again in the hopes of capturing Monroe's attention. But there would be more to this challenge, because Katlyn is a complex, talented and intriguing woman. It was fun to get to know her better, and understand her challenges, attractions and weaknesses. But, there's real trouble in paradise. Katlyn has some big issues to deal with and I took them to heart. Candidly, I was a little pissed-off on how she handled one key relationship, but that made the story realistic, since no one is perfect, and Kate James doesn't give us a cardboard cutout of a character in Katlyn. Maybe it was a bit too realistic, but apparently it struck a chord in me because here I am writing this review. The story touched me in some way, and it will probably touch you too. That's a sign of great writing. And, it isn't too hard to imagine this book being transformed into a movie. Most important, at least to me, is that people like Kate James still write love stories. In this age of hyper-sarcasm and cutting cynicism, James' book was a breath of fresh air. I'm tired of reality TV and our coarse culture filled with shouting and vain indulgence. Silver Linings was a great escape and brought me some perspective. Let's face it, most of us work so damn hard in this life that sometimes we forget what makes life worth living. And, then comes along Kate James and Silver Linings to remind us. Bravo, Kate! Please write another.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This book is perfection! ** spoiler alert ** Wow, this truly is a stunning book which is beautifully written. I read this book in one go because I could not put it down, it has the reader engaged from the first page right through to the last. This is the first book I have read by Kate James and it definitely will not be the last. This story will make you cry tears of joy and tears of sadness over again. The story does not start well for Katlyn, with the tragic death of her fiance you really feel for Katlyn from the beginning. The relationships between the characters are written well, of course the relationship between Ben and Katlyn is the most beautiful one, however, the relationship Katlyn has with Myra and Jolene are lovely too. The setting the story is told in is simply stunning, the author describes the beautiful surroundings well and it makes you want to be there. The part in the book where Katlyn and Ben take the boat trip to Martinique is simply stunning, I should imagine most readers would be very envious of Katlyn at that moment as I was. I also fell completely head over heels in love with Ben, I would imagine he would be everybody's "Mr Right". The story is not your usual sickly sweet love story, the beginning and end balances the story out well. One character I truly despised was Nigel, there were parts in the book I worried he may ruin the perfect relationship between Ben and Katlyn, I was relieved he didn't. There are so many things I could write about this book that I enjoyed but I don't want to ruin it. This book for me was perfection, I loved it so 5 stars from me. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful, stunning book Sliver Linings is a debut novel by Kate James, and follows the loves and losses of Katlyn. The story begins in a sad way, as Katlyn learns about the sudden and unexpected death of the love of her life. The story follows Katlyn as she takes residence in St Lucia to begin to rebuild her life. It is here that she meets the tall man with the dog on the beach one morning and her life takes on new developments in terms of her artistic work and love life. This book is everything you would expect from a romance novel, a character who’s life you wished you lived, a man you wished you’d met and a setting that is delightful. The writing is stunning, and Kate does a superb job of creating her characters, her settings and her story. The descriptions of Katlyn, and the man on the beach are just stunning and the day trip to Martinique is beautiful – I almost felt like I was there – which is no mean feat given it’s been wet and grey in Manchester this weekend! The book twists and turns into the unexpected, and Kate does a brilliant job of bringing a real depth to her characters; demonstrating to us the bond between Katlyn and her best friend Myra. We meet Jolene who is described exquisitely, and you really do feel on the side of Katlyn as she learns to love again. At the end of the book Kate has included an ‘about’ section – I wasn’t surprised to read through this and see some of her own life had been portrayed in the main characters – the bit about living abroad as a child struck me in particular. Also, from the way that Kate depicts Zach, the dog, you can tell she is a dog lover, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Zach was a dog of Kate’s; the attention to detail in describing Zach and his mannerisms and behaviour are exquisitely perfect. This is a simply beautiful book, that portrays a beautiful love story in a superb way. Credit must also go to the publishers, General Store Publishing House, as the finish on this e-book is second to none – the quality of the editing and tight story line and character development demonstrate not only what a superb writer Kate James is, but what a great partnership she must have developed with her publishers – it’s great to see ebooks being treated in such a professional way – and I for one can’t wait for the next instalment from Kate James!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Silver Linings by Kate James Katlyn Monroe was the happiest woman in the world. Recently engaged to a man she saw as her other half, she was planning for the future. Then tragedy struck. Katlyn was sure her world would never be the same again. It wasn't the same, it was changed though. Her life took turns no one could have seen coming and prepared her for the biggest challenge of her young life. A move to St. Lucia and some time to heal make all the difference in the world. Katlyn's life, it would seem, is full of Silver Linings. This is a wonderfully written book you'll want to share with your friends. It reminds us not to give up because just around the next corner, things may be even brighter. It's warm, caring and loving message is one that will carry through the years. This would be a terrific book for a book club. Much discussion can be made about the different areas of Katlyn's life. I couldn't find anything wrong with this book. It delivered on all counts.

In others words I would get lost in the story and couldn't put it down. The author's writing style reminds me of a favorite author of mine from a while ago. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel.
