Rated 5 out of 5 by from Highly engaging and readable Dr. Ratey, a psychiatrist in the U.S., have written a powerful book outlining why exercise is crucial for well-being. The unique point of this book however is not what exercise does for our hearts, lungs and muscles, but instead focuses on what it does for our brains. Chapters include the effects of exercise on kids in school, the use of exercise to treat depression, anxiety, ADHD, addiction and aggression as well as the benefits to improving memory and concentration. It starts with an example from a school district in the U.S. that utilizes a daily fitness-based physical education program and has seen dramatic improvements in academic test scores, student obesity and student aggression. The author then goes on to outline patients from his own practice that have used physical activity for treatment of a wide variety of mental disorders. The science is thorough and explained in a way that is very accessible to the lay reader. Highly recommended.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Sparkling News If you have had any doubts about the necessity and benefits of physical activity you'll have the urge to get moving by the time you finish this book. The trick is to make the exercise routine a habit. 'Exercise' a day will not just keep the doctor away but will also sharpen your memory. Good workout can serve as a natural remedy for deptession, anxiety, hormonal changes and as an antidote against addiction. Aerobic exercise will make both your body and brain fit for life.
