Teaching: It's Harder Than It Looks

by Gerry Dee

Doubleday Canada | October 23, 2012 | Hardcover

Teaching: It's Harder Than It Looks is rated 4.28571428571429 out of 5 by 7.

Gerry Dee is a rising comic star whose humour has been compared to Bill Cosby's. He spent ten years working as a teacher and survived (barely) to tell his tales. Told from the honest point-of-view of a not-so-good, often-very-bad public school teacher--the kind who teaches hungover (and lies about it), loses his students' exams (and lies about it), and stages an impromptu baseball game in the middle of history class just to kill some time, Teaching: It's Harder Than It Looks is Mr. D at his best.

This book collects Gerry's funniest anecdotes about teaching, about students and about their parents. As Gerry's ode to school life, it's sure to bring back a memory or two, whether you were the teacher's pet or the class clown. Throughout, he offers tongue-in-cheek "Teacher Tips and Tricks," uncomfortable notes to parents, awkward report cards and all manner of memorabilia of school days.

He's extremely funny, on the page as well as in person, and he's the kind of personality who will reach out beyond his own core comedy audience to a broad demographic of educators, parents and students who relate to his humour and experiences.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from What A Fabulous Read I love his show and am now crazy about this book. This book was written very well and the humor is end less. What I also I liked were the memories it brought back. Its an easy read and definetly worth a 5 star rating.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from What A Fabulous Read Absolutely hilarious! This book reminded me of all of the reasons I love to teach. It tells humorous stories about the challenging aspects of being a teacher. There were several times I found myself laughing out loud as I read the pages. It is so relatable and I absolutely loved it!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Teaching - It's Harder Than It Looks I thought the book had some funny moments but certainly not anywhere as many as I was expecting. However, it was entertaining to read, especially when he shared his thoughts about what he would REALLY like to say to some of those obnoxious students or their parents.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Teaching - It's Harder Than It Looks Very entertaining and exactly how I imagine the world of teachers (grew up with a teacher-Dad). Kudos to Gerry for telling it like it really is...and doing it with such humour. Teachers should really read this one!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Hilarious I think this book is so great. I want to buy it for my dad and my cousin. I laughed out more than a few times. I couldn't put it down. The beginnings of chapters always get a laugh because they are an image of a chalk board with things written and crosses out. I makes me laugh that his current job on CBC's Mr. D, combines both his teaching carrier and comedic past.

Rated out of 5 by from This book is hilarious! For any teachers / future teachers / parents or students - this is your book! It's an easy read, full of fun tails inside and outside the classroom.

Editorial Reviews

“This book has a clear ring of authenticity. . . . Aspiring teachers would be well advised to read the book before going to a faculty of education. It contains the kinds of revelations you will never find at teacher’s college. . . . Buried in those wacky, ribald stories and lists of “off-the wall” tips, you will find shafts of light and a few undeniable truths about the teaching life.”
