Now in paperback, the book no one can stop talking about . . .

In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the other districts in line by forcing them to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight-to-the-death on live TV.

One boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and sixteen are selected by lottery to play. The winner brings riches and favor tohis or her district. But that is nothing compared to what the Capitol wins: one more year of fearful compliance with its rule. Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who lives alone with her mother and younger sister, regards it as a death sentence when she is forced to represent her impoverished district in the Games.

But Katniss has been close to dead before - and survival, for her, is second nature. Without really meaning to, she becomes a contender. But if she is to win, she will have to start making choices that weigh survival against humanity and life against love.

Acclaimed writer Suzanne Collins, author of the New York Times bestselling Underland Chronicles, delivers equal parts suspense and philosophy, adventure and romance, in this stunning novel set in a future with unsettling parallels to our present.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Classic for Me This book is amazing. In my eyes, it's a classic already and I definitely see myself re-reading this series again. This book is great as a stand alone novel but it introduces us/sets us up for the other two books perfectly. Really intense, I couldn't connect with any of the characters but it was too suspenseful and entertaining for that to matter. Overall, AMAZING BOOK. (in my opinion, this series deserves the hype). #plumreview

Rated 2 out of 5 by from The Hunger Games (The Hunger Games #1) by Suzanne Collins I am stunned .. shocked .. I didn't find this story very enjoyable , this wasn't my favorite story of all times !! ( I know crazy right??) but the story didn't click for me .. Katniss is cold-hearted and selfish , the best thing about the story is Peeta and even he got his heart broken .. hope the next installment will be better

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing! Though I can see the connections made to Battle Royale, I found The Hunger Games to be unique, thrilling, and filled with memorable characters and scenes. It was just so much fun, especially when it came to the politics and world-building. I couldn't get enough and can't wait to see what happens next! These characters are here to stay!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not bad... Studying it in school now I loved it the first time I read it, but when I re-read it I wasn't completely satisfied. Now I am in a class that is centred around this series and I am learning a lot about the novels and it has made me realize how amazing this world of Panem really is.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Still One Of My All Time Favorites It's been over six years since I first read The Hunger Games, and yet every year this series is still one of the ones that I choose to reread over and over again. I love nothing more than getting lost in the pages of this amazing dystopian world that Suzanne Collins has created, and I foresee myself buying some of the various other editions of these novels in the future. If you're at all interested in dystopian YA, I can't recommend this series enough and I love how Katniss, Peeta, Primrose, and Gale have started to feel like old friends to me with how many times I've read these amazing novels.

Date published: 2016-12-14
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great! Aside from yet another love triangle in another story, which seems to be a common theme, the novel was great. It touched upon the importance of forming relationships with people in order to grow into your own, and also the struggles that come with breaking tradition. A good story and characters that grew on me during the entire book!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Hunger Games I was never a fan of dystopian novels. This just cemented my feelings about them. Boring, cliche heroine, cliche plot, cliche love interests.
Date published: 2016-12-05
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great! I loved this book! It is a great young adult piece of fiction - basically taking the idea of reality TV to the next level. If you are a fan of the tv show Survivor, you will definitely see some commentary. I also really enjoyed the first person narration. You can see how Katniss is young, inexperienced and confused about her feelings towards both Peeta and Gale. Includes different plot points and characters that the movie does not.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great YA While I wasn't fond of the narrative style, I did enjoy the book more than I thought I would. I quickly learned what the world was like and how the Hunger Games worked, and once the games began it didn't take long for me to be immersed in the environment of the story. One scene was a bit of a shocking and off-putting experience to me, but that was probably because I felt that it was a bit risky to put in a young adult novel. This scene was when (view spoiler) Although it was an uncomfortable scene, it was also a memorable one even though it felt out of place among the rest. This is definitely the better book of the series. The build up of the romance was slow enough for it to not interfere with the survival aspect of the story, and the characters were written well enough so that I cared for them as the games progressed. The book also moved in such a way that it was not a bore to go through, and once it was done I was ready to read the next one. Although the other books are not as good, The Hunger Games series is still a worthwhile read. The themes that emerge later on are good ones to think through, and the plot drives the story in such a way that it deserves a read even if only to find out what happens to the characters and the world in the end. #plumreview

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I really enjoyed this story! This is one of the best dystopian stories I've read before (and I've read quite a lot). However, I feel that Suzanne Collins' vocabulary or choice of words could be improved. There were quite a lot of "'Okay,' I say,"s and "'(blank),' I say"s in there, and it got bland pretty quickly. Still, I enjoyed it :) #plumreview

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Read I really enjoyed this novel. The plot is interesting and original. The stakes are high in this novel and it is difficult to put it down. Katniss is a strong female read. The only thing that was difficult about the novel is that I didn't really identify with her as a character. She has a strong sense of self-preservation which causes her to come off as a cold/calculating character.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from WOW WOW. That is the first thing I have to say. I was originally not going to read The Hunger Games. I hated the popularity it had received. I'm the type of reader that enjoys reading for personal reasons, not because the whole world loves the book! I also hate reading the book AFTER it has reached fame because it usually takes out the personal aspect of reading for me. But wow, this book was amazing. I'm glad my friends persuaded stubborn me into reading it! Although it had many characters, they all had a personal attachment with the reader, even if that attachment was one of hate, however it was never possible to completely hate a character! Oddly, Haymitch reminded me of Morrie, from Mitch Albom's Tuesday's with Morrie (one of my all time favourite books). Rue and Cinna were two of my other favourite characters. The book was so well thought out, even if you knew what was going to happen, you still enjoyed it when it occured! It's a great read and I can't wait to get started on the next one!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great writing This book had me hooked and I couldn't stop reading. I love the political side of it where the hunger games are merely a spectator sport for the wealthy, much to the demise of the poor working class.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Beginning to the Trilogy This was definitely my favourite book in the trilogy. I loved the series, but this one was just the most fluid in terms of plot, and the character development was the clearest. #plumreview

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Well-written but I didn't enjoy it The Hunger Games is one of the most popular books to this day. I never understood the hype. I have read so many books with a similar idea and I couldn't really find myself enjoying this book or find myself being attached to any of the characters. The idea of randomly selecting people and getting them to kill each other is an overused idea in so many books and this wasn't special in any way. I can't deny that the book was written well though, and the cover art is great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from No question: SO GOOD The Hunger Games is loved because it stands as a very unique piece of teen fiction. Loved the writing/world building and the characters are phenomenal. Still enjoyable even if you have watched the movies.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great story! very much love this book.. the story is great and the cover as well... If you want to own this book series, I recommend buying the paperback instead of the hardcover... easier to bring around and you surely will read it over and over.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Total worth reading! Many people don't bother with reading the book because of the movie. However, I read this before the movie came out and absolutely loved it! There is so much more detail in the book and is absolutely worth a read.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Iconic Everyone knows about this book and the hype surrounding it. If you haven't read this book already I really recommend that you do because the book is so detailed where you can imagine yourself in that world and get yourself lost in it. The characters are very brave and are very inspiring. This book is truly about learning about yourself and standing up for what you believe in.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from LOVE If you haven't read this book yet, you need to make some time. If you loved or even liked the movie, the book is still worth reading. There is so much more information and story that you really need to know about. And once you do, the film will be even better. Do it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from May the odds be ever in your favour Young adult dystopian fiction at its best. Are the ideas totally original? Probably not. Could the writing be a bit better? Probably. Did I devour this book anyway? Absolutely. Don't. Other with the movie, just read it. #plumreview

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Better Than The Movie Bought this book before the movie came out and i am glad i did. The novel is so much better than the book and it feels as though you are more connected to the characters than in the movie. Great summer read.#plumreview

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My Favourite Books When I was 14, I was quite a shy, introverted girl who had a lot of friends but preferred, a lot of the times, to be alone. In this way, Katniss was a very relatable character to me. Let me start out by saying that this is one of the many strengths of this book. Katniss is real. I know that's said a lot about many characters, but this time, it's true. Katniss doesn't want to be a hero, she wants to keep herself and her loved ones safe. She's not a hunter because she's a badass, she's a hunter because that's how she keeps herself and her family alive. She has flaws that are genuine; they're not cute things like being utterly clumsy and having everyone think "awe, shucks, isn't she adorable?" She's can be selfish, impulsive, and frustrating, but she's also loyal, brave, and understanding. As the series progresses, she has moments where she's broken, and that seems to bother many people, but I love the fact that she's not a superhero. That's not what she wanted to be and, to be honest, I wouldn't want that for myself either. On top of that, the other characters are developed wonderfully (especially Peeta Mellark, who is the sweetest and least-douchey love interest I've ever read about in novel) and the plot is fast-paced and has a little bit of everything. 5 years after having first read the book and I still love it. Incredibly rereadable. Completely worth buying. #plumreview

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My first fandom The hunger games is easily on my top ten list on book series and has been there for me when I was little and was my first ever book series that I have read in my life, I continue to read this book series EVERY SINGLE NOVEMBER because of the movie anniversary and even though there are no more movies or books to look forward to anymore with the hunger games, It still gives me a shock every time I read it and has multiple dents on it from when I threw it across the room. Thanks Suzanne!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from OK Over all It is a good book, but the idea isn't very new or unique, it's basically like every other YA dystopian novel. But i will say it's much better then the movies and while it's nothing new it is good, nothing to rave about though.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from my fave This book is actually the one that made me discover my passion for reading, a great place to start if you never read YA novels before.
