about

This is Henri Nouwen's "secret journal." It was  written during the most difficult period of his life, when he suddenly lost his self-esteem,  his energy to live and work, his sense of being loved, even his hope in God. Although he experienced excruciating anguish and despair, he was still able to keep a journal in which he wrote a spiritual imperative to himself each day that emerged from his conversations with friends and supporters.

For more than eight years, Henri Nouwen felt that what he wrote was too raw and private to share with others. Instead, he published The Return of the Prodigal Son, in which he expressed some of the insights gained during his mental and spiritual crisis. But then friends asked him, "Why keep your anguish hidden from the many people who have been nurtured by your writing? Wouldn't it be of consolation for many to know about the fierce inner battle that lies underneath so many of your spiritual insights?"

For the countless men and women who have to live through the pain of broken relationships, or who suffer from the loss of a loved one, this book about the inner voice of love offers new courage, new hope, even new life.
Henri J.M. Nouwen was a Catholic priest who taught at several theological institutes and universities in his home country of the Netherlands and in the United States. He shared the final years of his life with people with mental and physical disabilities at the L'Arche Daybreak Community in Toronto, Canada. He died in 1996. He authored...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This book really got me through some stuff When I was grieving, one of my girlfriends bought me this and his writing made things okay, I didn't feel as alone & grew closer to God as I found beauty in my human brokenness. It is recommended you don't read this all at once but jump from chapter to chapter to how *you* see fit. It's a bit of an "adventure" book that way- you choose the topic :) Highly recommend his writing & his books! #plumreview

He compares his writings to grains of salt: too much ruins a meal but a little at a time flavours it. We are asked to slowly savour the wise lessons and insights he has discovered through his own journey out of anguish to a life immersed in a heart of gratitude. Joy, peace, love and hope are the gifts of the Spirit that radiates through the heart. From Our Editors

While Henri Nouwen experienced the worst spiritual and mental crisis of his life, he kept a secret journal to pull him through. He worked through his inability to work and his loss of self-esteem by writing daily commands - insights that came from talking with friends. Although he wanted to share what he learned, he thought his journal was too raw, so instead Nouwen wove those revelations into The Return Of The Prodigal Son, a less personal book about spirituality. Eventually, he realized readers could learn more about recovering from loss and regaining courage through his very private battle and published his journal in the form of The Inner Voice Of Love.
