about

Is it a happy ending? Define happy. Stuart Lewis, thirty-three, in love and content, wakes up one day to find his fiance has left him. Perpetually underemployed and now homeless, Stuart moves onto his mother's couch. With few connections and no ambition, Stuart is forced to rethink the choices he has made and the sincerity of the life that has just been shattered. Set against the frigid backdrop of downtown Toronto, The Year She Left casts an eclectic bunch of directionless underachievers and unlikely heroes amid the buzz of late night binges and early corporate bustle. Honest and unapologetic about the often detached nature of urban existence, this is the story of what happened in the year she left.

Reviews

Rated 5 out of 5 by from More please Kerry Kelly writes with such great empathy that you will not only believe the characters immediately, you may recognize Stuart, his mother, and others among the people in your own community. You may even understand them a little better. "The Year She Left" will fly by in hours as this very real story moves quickly with excitement and surprise. You won't want to miss a thing by putting the book down. I loved this experience so much I was elated to find Kelly's second novel, "The Family Album" - a completely different story and setting with all the same qualities. She will be my new favourite Canadian author if she keeps them coming.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Loved it!! This book was smart, witty and quick. Couldn't put it down. I read The Emperor's Children by Claire Messud right after The Year She Left and I must say I enjoyed The Year She Left way more! The book is current and so witty. Highly recommend.
