In a land without magic, where the king rules with an iron hand, an assassin is summoned to the castle. She comes not to kill the king, but to win her freedom. If she defeats twenty-three killers, thieves, and warriors in a competition, she is released from prison to serve as the king's champion. Her name is Celaena Sardothien.

The Crown Prince will provoke her. The Captain of the Guard will protect her. But something evil dwells in the castle of glass--and it's there to kill. When her competitors start dying one by one, Celaena's fight for freedom becomes a fight for survival, and a desperate quest to root out the evil before it destroys her world.

Sarah J. Maas is the #1 New York Times and internationally bestselling author of the Throne of Glass series, as well as the Court of Thorns and Roses series. Her books are published in over thirty-six languages. A New York native, Sarah lives in Pennsylvania with her husband and

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great read This series is good. I was one of the few that didn’t enjoy the third book as much as I should have and at first wasn’t a fan of where the trajectory the series went after Heir of Fire. However, I gave it a second chance after having loved the first 2 books and enjoyed the series regardless. Although the main character can be frustrating at times because frankly, she’s a spoiled brat, I still found myself rooting for her which just shows how great a writer Maas is. Overall I really enjoyed this series.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Start I went into Throne of Glass expecting to have the same reaction Red Rising and Fangirl gave me. Both were over hyped, in my opinion, and both failed to impress me. Throne of Glass was an honestly great attempt at a first novel for Sarah J. Maas. The lead Celaena is a great character and that touch of femininity to her was nice, the story barely faltered and rarely stalled on itself, and had a great supporting cast. There was enough about the outside world to make me intrigued about future installments and where these characters will take me. However, Throne of Glass is not without it's faults. While I did like Celaena's characterization, I felt like one aspect of her wasn't given enough 'screen time'. For a ruthless, kick ass, assassin, she doesn't get to show case a lot of that side of her. We read that she's the best in her league, there's no match to her awesome powers. Celeana can kill someone with a variety of weapons from great distances, yet, we kind of just have to take the authors word for it. There's novellas that are set a year before this novel, but I wish Throne of Glass was more contained then that and I wish I didn't have to go searching for background stories or extra information on a character when it should have been given here. Not that I needed entire chapters of Celeana painting the walls red with the blood of her enemies, but more depth to that side of her would have been nice instead of just the gentle reassurance that Celaena could kill a man ten ways before his body hit the floor. I get that she had to hold back early in the competition for the sake of hiding her true identity, but it feels like much of what made her character was glossed over in favor of how good she looked in dresses and how pretty the boys were. Which brings me to my second point of where I think this book needed a little help. The competition was a little lack luster. Murderers, assassins, thieves, criminals.... all competing in a contest that could change their lives and most of it, again, felt glossed over in favor of Celaena's love interests fawning over her. It's not to say that nothing happened in Throne of Glass, there was plenty going on, but for what felt like was suppose to be the main event, the competition felt like an after thought. A task would happen and we'd hear about it in passing and how Celena did well. Then a competitor would be murdered and it'd be given page time, but I feel like there was a lot of time dedicated to the love interests instead and honestly, I didn't care too much for either one. Regarding the love interests, While I can't say I hated either one, I can't really say I liked them either. Both Choal and Dorian were pretty boring and it comes down to the two generic teams: the funny, charming, playboy or the distant, aloof, hero type. Typical Team Edward or Team Jacob business. I didn't swoon for either and was much more invested in Celaena's struggles and friendships with Nehemia and Nox. In short, a great start to the series.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Exciting start to series It can be somewhat on parallel with Hunger Games except on a fantasy setting and sans the dystopia. Celaena is quite the character to like. She’s witty, smart, she’s got the talk and has the walk to prove it, she’s everything you like in a strong female character and more. I love her sass and overall personality. The plot itself was good and engaging to read. There’s a mix of everything. Mystery, intrigue, action, and romance. I’d have to say it’s a little bit too much of a mix. I was really more into reading about the competition and Celaena’s skills. The mystery aspect did not really capture my attention and didn’t think it was very exciting. Sure, it did keep you guessing but it wasn’t filled with any twists and turns one might expect in a mystery. The romance was all right although I also didn’t think a love triangle was necessary in this one. (It was pretty hard to choose which one of the two were better. They both had their qualities that made them likable so I’m going to sit on the fence and be neutral on this) I also enjoyed reading into Celaena’s and Nehemia’s friendship. I rather liked the bond they shared and Nehemia can hold her own as well so I liked how the two of them shared some common ground. The ending was excellent and I’m going to be reading the rest of this. I hear it gets better! So I’m looking forward to getting the second.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Series Upon first reading it, I really liked it, it has a strong female lead and it's rife with action, humor, adventure, magic and a hint of mystery. However, this book is only the tip of the iceberg, this series is one of those rare ones that gets even more epic as it progresses. #plumreview

Rated 5 out of 5 by from BEST SERIES Best series I've ever read, hands down. Such intense character development that it almost felt like it all just blew by in a huge gust of wind, it was surprising, yet not sudden; there were huge plot twists, yet it was well constructed so that it was always underlying, it didn't upend the entire story line when it became apparent. The beginning of this series and the beginning of even the third book are worlds apart and the series took an ENTIRELY new path, yet it wasn't sloppy, rushed or lazy writing, it was crafted by a mastermind that must've took immense planning that is still hard to comprehend after reading it 10 times over. I personally think this first book is mediocre, same with the second, but LORDIE if you pick up this series and follow through, right around Heir of Fire you will start questioning your place in the world, the ground around you will shake and it'll feel like your brain is melting; in the best way possible. Do not underestimate me when I say, overtime you will re read this series, you will find even MORE clues that you passed by 10 times the first million times you Rea it. She sets up the plot for the fourth book in book 0.5. Your mind will be blown everytime. I t is crazy. Sarah J Maas is some kind of Godlike mastermind for being able to create this series. The years of plotting and planning she must have taken before even picking up a pencil to write seems overwhelming. PLEASE for the love of everything holy, read this series and just wait until heir of fire, where your socks (even if you aren't wearing any) will be knocked off. Best. Piece. of Literature. Ever.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Horrible From the book description, I was hoping for a cool assassin. This is not that. Instead, this is a story of a delicate flower pining after two men, while obsessing over her wardrobe.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A must read for any! When I had first read this book, I wasn't into fantasy or unrealistic fiction and had gone into this with zero expectations. Immediately after finishing Throne of Glass, and the rest of the series, I was taken on a fantasy journey throughout these books. A very well written first book to a series. An amazing, fun, exciting page-turner for any teen.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Biased and Loving It I remember reading this back when it was posted online at fictionpress with frequent updates that left readers always wanting more, so I am completely biased in my love for the series. This is a series that's full of romance, intrigue, mystery, and action. The reader is introduced to characters that they will quickly love or hate as they frolic through the chapters. Definitely something that romance and fantasy fans should try, this novel is a great start to a series that offers a gripping hold over readers as the story progresses.

Date published: 2018-06-13
Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of my favourite first novels in a series I immediately loved this book! It got me excited and it was so intriguing. It gave me everything I've been wanting in a book: a strong, female protagonist, a fight to the death, assassins (!), a love triangle, and a hint of magic. I highly recommend this novel as well as the rest of the series. If you enjoy high fantasy this is the book for you.
Date published: 2018-05-27
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Overall, a good read! #plumreview Although I really love this entire series, I find that this first book is usually the one that turns my friends off, its a bit slow and not as well written as the rest (its to be expected, she wrote it when she was a teenager, I believe). If you pull through this first one, the series only gets better and better! If you're interested in reading an epic fantasy series, definitely read this so you can get to the good stuff!
Date published: 2018-05-26
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Somewhat Enjoyable The book was all right, but a bit dry in terms of typical characters and overused story arcs. Still didn’t stop me from buying the entire series, though.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from For way more than just young adults! A clerk at the local Coles told me that the series started a little slow, but would eventually go full "Game of Thrones" in terms of epicness and action. She was not wrong. I was back in the next day to pick up the next couple books, and they got better with each one! I highly recommend this series to anyone looking for their next fantasy, or anyone looking for a series with a phenomenal female lead!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from LOVE this is soooooo amazing! I couldn't get enough. Couldn't put it down!!! Love all the different perspectives! this series is amazing
Date published: 2018-05-14
Rated 3 out of 5 by from 3.5* The story line is interesting, the protagonist is amazing, but aside from that the book felt flat to me. The weakest part is definitely the writing. However, I've read Sarah J. Maas' later series (A Court of Thorns and Roses) and LOVE the writing and love the stories. The Throne of Glass series is her first work. I'm optimistic that the writing will get better. I'm currently reading the 2nd book and already liking the writing better. I surprisingly didn't care for the romance element in this book (which is not like me at all!). I didn't feel like the romance grew, it was almost like insta-love and way too fast and the way she ended the romance at the end of the book felt random. I'm hoping it's because the author is setting something up for the second book. I've heard this is the weakest book of the series and that it only gets better, so I'm excited to see what will happen next.b

Rated 3 out of 5 by from It was good Everyone had been raving about this book, so I thought I would pick it up and give it a try. It was good, but not over the top good. The premise was great and had a lot of potential, although I really dislike the love triangle going on in here. It could have been better
Date published: 2018-05-07
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Meh Celaena is a very unlikable protagonist, I can't get past that.
Date published: 2018-05-06
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Start! Such a good start to a new series. I fell in love with Chaol instantly and I love how there isn't exactly a love triangle (at least, the book doesn't revolve around it).
Date published: 2018-05-05
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love YA fantasy I'm a huge fan of YA fantasy novels, especially ones with female lead characters, and I absolutely fell in love with this series. If you don't end up being a huge fan of the first book, please give the others a chance when you're done. You'll clearly see Maas' development as an author in each book of the series.
Date published: 2018-05-03
Rated 3 out of 5 by from It was okay but wasn't worth the hype This book was okay. I honestly didn't understand the hype around it. To be quite honest, the plot is kind of meh and the characters are okay. I understand that many readers like the character Chaol but I found him quite annoying. Overall, the characters are quite forgettable. But the book itself was decent. Not the best or greatest, but not the worst either. It has potential. I have the next couple of books in the series, but I don't know when I'll get to them. I prefer Sarah J. Mass's A Court of Thorns and Roses over this series for sure.
Date published: 2018-05-03
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth the Hype If you're looking for an exciting, fantasy read, this is the one for you. There are tons of badass characters in this series, awesome fight scenes, and a lot of unique, mystical elements. I recommend this book a lot more than A Court of Thorns and Roses (also by Sarah J. Maas). This is a much better series, and there is still plenty of romance and drama and comedy among the violence and war.
Date published: 2018-05-01
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love IT this is my new all-time favourite book series in the world, the first book is amazing but you need to keep reading because they only get better as you go. honestly, celaena has taught me so much and is my motivation for going to the gym and working out every day! she's such a strong individual and to see how she grows is amazing the character development is phenomenal throughout this book and all the others
Date published: 2018-04-20
Rated 4 out of 5 by from If you had to read one YA fantasy book this year, make it this one. This book, (and the entire serie) is such an epic bad-ass read. It is a bit slower than the others, but even after a couple of chapters you'll be hooked. Celaena is such a strong female character, she is just amazing. READ IT.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Throne of Glass is my favourite book I was introduced to this series around 5 years ago, and I'm so glad that it happened! I really wish I could buy all the books instead of borrowing them from the library. Celaena Sardothien is a badass assassin who goes on an epic journey of love, hate, and killing

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great from the start all the way to the end The story starts off with excitement. That's something that got me interested and kept me turning the pages. This book series was recommended (shoved into my arms and I was told to read it) by my friend and I am so happy that she showed me this because it helped me find my love for reading. It was entertaining from the first page to the last and continued to give me the 'feels' through the whole series.Anyways I definitely recommend this and I hope you will love it as much as I did .

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great fantasy novel! After reading falling in love with Cassie Clare's Shadowhunter series and JK Rowling's Harry Potter books I didn't think I'd find another universe just as fulfilling until I picked up this book! Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not as good as the other books in the series Let me first say the Throne of Glass series is one of my absolute FAVORITES of all time. But this first book just isn't as strong for me. The sheer scope of the worldbuilding in this series is phenomenal, so check it out if you like fantasy! I really can’t think of many other worlds I love this much… I mean, there are demon kings, fae, witches & wyverns, pirate lords, princes, kingdoms & castles, magic, spirits with cryptic advice, swords & battles, ancient prophecies, politics, well-developed history & religion, multiple complex villains, and it spans multiple continents and cultures. It has a Hunger Games feel to it as all of the assassins train with various weapons and slowly get eliminated. But then tons of awesome stuff with Wyrdmarks and portals and fae history gets woven in and the competition becomes even more threatening... but this stuff is explained way better in the sequels. The "evil" plot in this book is just a shadow of the amazing tangled mess it turns into eventually. Oh, and I totally love the parallels between Maas characters and worlds. (Like Celaena in Heir of Fire and Feyre in ACOMAF are so wonderfully similar). Basically this first book is a fun story, but it absolutely pales in comparison with the sequels!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Enticing Celaena Sardothien is an unforgettable character that is so dynamic, that readers can relate to her on such deep levels. She has the strength of a boar and the courage of the lion. Her beauty is truly within and out, and Sarah J. Mass has done an excellent job displaying this. Love triangles, fights to the death, a powerful female lead, are just a few components to this spectacular novel. Intrigued? You should be.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Completely Enthralling! I had Throne of Glass on my bookshelf for a while but was so intimidated by the size at the time. Although, once you get past the first few chapters it captivates your mind completely. If you're a fan of action, fantasy and a little bit or quite a lot of romance then this book is definitely for you. As you move onto the other books, the story only gets better, trust me. However, take in mind there are some major plot twists and cliff hangers!!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Favorite series (of all time) Sarah J. Maas is a phenomenal writer, the Throne of Glass series is a must read for... well anyone. Fast paced action, bad ass heroines and heroes, romance, tons of world building and a writing style that will suck you into the world of Erilea. The whole series is a must read of course. The first book is about teenage assassin Celaena Sardothien who has to compete for her freedom in a competition to become the kings champion (hitman/woman). And you really need to read the whole series because the world building is INSANE (So good!).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing start to an amazing series !!! I have been trying to get back into reading for a while now and I was watching some review on fantasy and this series was one of them. So I went to the nearest book shop and read the first chapter.... I was hooked. I did not buy it for the fact that I wanted to read it on my kobo. For my first book in a long time, I had a very hard time putting down !! There is a tone of action and suspense. It is easy to fall in love with the main characters. Very very well done, I absolutely highly recommend this book !! #plumreview

With amazing action and well planned drama it's definitely not a book you would want to miss out on. The characters are all well written and there is an honesty to the reality of each one that makes the novel so very compelling.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Heroine Fantasy! This book was fantastic, although it seems to be just another run of the mill fantasy novel, it's a fantasy Tolkien would be proud of. Filled with action, courage, a little romance and paired with a strong female assassin, you can't go wrong with this intriguing book
Date published: 2017-11-28
Rated 5 out of 5 by from A must read! An amazing book with a kick-ass character who is an assassin! The writing couldn't be any better and the story was absolutely incredible. Celaena's history was explained very clearly and her pain from it was really touching. I loved the romance between her and the other characters as well as her curious side of her personality. I loved how Celaena loves chocolate like a little kid!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from My daughter couldn't put this book down! MY 13 yr old loved this book... but there were some highly intimate parts that I find inappropriate for her age. It was unnecessary and without it, the book would still be fantastic. well written. hope to read less of these scenes in the future.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Epic fantasy novel I absolutely loved it! The first few chapters I was feeling a little iffy because it seemed too similar to the fantasy novels I've read before, but then it gets REALLY interesting and from there things just go down and it's an awesome read. make sure you're willing to buy all those SJM books though. In my opinion, they are totally worth the rereads, but since i am a little bit on the cheaper side im collecting the paperbacks. (hardcovers are way too expense for collections!!!)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Second Go Around I had previously started this series but fell off the wagon after the first book (so many books so little time), but after hearing so many great comments I reread the first and am on my way to pick up the second. The plot kept me engaged and I have become invested in Celaena as a character.
Date published: 2017-10-10
Rated 2 out of 5 by from No I find my main gripe with this series is that I constantly compare it to her A Court of Thorns and Roses trilogy, perhaps it is because this book was written so long ago but it just did not do it for me as a reader. I could not back the main character and did not enjoy the way she flip-flopped from strong woman to asshole for no reason besides just "that's how she is" without any person calling her out on it. She was the assassiniest assassin that ever assassined but she didn't DO a good job at it or do ANYTHING really. I may give this series another chance when I'm not so unimpressed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from MIND BLOWING BOOK!!!! Such a great introductory novel! the world and the characters were really well developed in this first instalment. But Sarah J Maas left so much room for this story to grow! Awesome Fantasy read!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Buy it NOW This book is insanely amazing! If you have read Maas' other series before this then you will definitely love this. I would love for her to combine both stories though! I think combining the two series would be epic but anyways they are amazing regardless and I love how there are so many books so you can keep on reading so excited to read the next ones! Fairies are exactly what I'm looking for!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This series is everything This series is just outstanding. Already they are 5 books in and the series has just gotten better as it's gone along. Sometimes the problem with long series (more than 3 books) is that the story get stagnant/ unimaginative the longer it goes on. With this series that is simply not the case, I feel like every book just ups the ante from the last one. I'm eager to see how the series all comes to an end.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good series, not good start I am so lucky i was warned and started the series with assassin's blade, because starting with this one would have left me completely unhappy. But since I read this one has book two it was a great continuity and it was very fun to get to know Celeana again, after her huge trauma.

It has everything I need in a book - action, strong female, romance, mystery & incredible character development. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Re-Read by Audiobook The only issue I had was trouble adjusting to Celaena's voice because I know it as the voice of Nina in Six of Crows. Other than that, it was great getting into the world again. It's been so long, I had forgotten a lot of the minor details. For instance, how many names Celaena goes through! Already started Crown of Midnight.
Date published: 2017-08-08
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Enjoyable I'd give this more a 3.5 stars. I enjoyed it, though at times I rolled my eyes. The slight love triangle didn't really work for me because Celaena's interest in the prince seemed to pop up rather suddenly (she all of a sudden started feeling smitten around him but there were no moments that really told me why, it's like he gave her books and that was that). I believed her connection to Chaol more than her connection to Dorian.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from OH MY GOD Where do I even begin? Bad*ss female lead? Check. Lovable and well developed characters? Check. Interesting and constantly evolving plot? Check. I love this series to death. Both my lockscreen and homescreen are ToG related. I have re-read the ending to EoS more times than I should, as each time it makes me sob. (ToD please come out already) GOd I LOVE THIS SERIES. This is more of a fangirl post than a review, I've realized. Oops. This book will get you hooked, guaranteed. Give it a try, especially if you love fantasy and bas*ssery. Read this, you won't regret it.

Editorial Reviews

"Readers seeking the political intrigue of Kristen Cashore's Graceling and its sequels or the deadly competition at the heart of The Hunger Games will find both in Maas's strong debut novel. . . . The verve and freshness of the narration make for a thrilling read." -Publishers Weekly, starred review"A teenage assassin, a rebel princess, menacing gargoyles, supernatural portals and a glass castle prove to be as thrilling as they sound. . . . Celaena is still just a teenager trying to forge her way, giving the story timelessness. This commingling of comedy, brutality and fantasy evokes a rich alternate universe with a spitfire young woman as its brightest star." -Kirkus Reviews"Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas is a tale full of surprises and shadows, where deadly seeds are sown with the promise of more danger to come. A fascinating glimpse into the dark side of Cinderella." -Colleen Houck, the NYT Bestselling author of the Tiger's Curse series
