Fall under the spell of Wake-the first book in an achingly beautiful new series by celebrated author Amanda Hocking-and lose yourself to the Watersong.
Gorgeous. Fearless. Dangerous. They're the kind of girls you envy; the kind of girls you want to hate. Strangers in town for the summer, Penn, Lexi and Thea have caught everyone's attention-but it's Gemma who's attracted theirs. She's the one they've chosen to be part of their group.
Gemma seems to have it all-she's carefree, pretty, and falling in love with Alex, the boy next door. He's always been just a friend, but this summer they've taken their relationship to the next level, and now there's no going back. Then one night, Gemma's ordinary life changes forever. She's taking a late night swim under the stars when she finds Penn, Lexi and Thea partying on the cove. They invite her to join them, and the next morning she wakes up on the beach feeling groggy and sick, knowing something is different.
Suddenly Gemma is stronger, faster, and more beautiful than ever. But her new powers come with a terrifying price. And as she uncovers the truth, she's is forced to choose between staying with those she loves-or entering a new world brimming with dark hungers and unimaginable secrets.

AMANDA HOCKING is the author of the New York Times bestselling Trylle trilogy and six additional self-published novels. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved it I really like how she wrote a book about something that nobody would think of. I was like wow when I realized what the book was about. I really love Greek myths and that's what it was giving me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amanda Hocking This author, I LOVE HER. She has a beautiful sense of imagination and she pulled me into the heart of Jemma. I was actually in the book. She made me believe that the world was fake and her fictional world was real. Jemma goes on a huge journey. She learns about herself and about the others around her. Amanda Hocking is the best author ever. She is captivating from page one. If you are looking at this book saying. I don't know. Read it, Read it. She is the best. Rated 3 out of 5 by from Fell flat 2.5 - 3 stars I’ll be honest - the beautiful cover of Wake is what initially drew me to the book. I didn’t know much about the book before I read it, but I’d seen dozens of other bloggers talking about it, so I was curious. Unfortunately - and I really do hate to say this - the cover was one of the only things I liked about Wake. I didn’t really like Gemma or Harper, nor was I able to connect with them. I didn’t feel like there was much depth to them, and neither of them really developed as characters. Gemma’s love of the water was pretty much the only thing that defined her, and Harper’s domineering personality was a bit much to take at times. At one point Gemma called her sister ‘a bossy, know-it-all control freak’ and that pretty much sums it up. Daniel was pretty much the only character I liked, and that was really only because he had more personality than any of the others. Alex was okay, but I got tired of hearing about how he’d gone from a geek to a total hottie practically overnight without anyone noticing, as if he wasn’t worth noticing until he became hot. The pacing of the book was really slow, and I thought Hocking probably could have written one really good book instead of breaking this into a trilogy. Not much happened in Wake - in fact, it felt like the book was mostly made up of dialogue, and I found myself skimming a lot. What little there was about siren mythology was interesting, but I wish it had been expanded upon. Overall, Wake just didn’t do it for me. I wasn’t able to connect with the characters or the story, and I felt like I waited most of the book for something - anything - to happen. If you enjoy stories about mermaids/sirens or mythology, this book might be for you.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved it! When I first started reading Wake I thought I was about to start my second ever mermaid book. Note to everyone, there are NO mermaids. I also had no idea that there was going to be a mythological background story. I was so EXCITED for that!! I love mythology!! Needless to say, I throughly enjoyed reading Wake, it took me less than a day to read it and was a fairly easy and quick read. I actually hadn't read anything by Amanda Hocking before (although the Trylle series sits on my shelf, so I will get to it!!), so this was a very nice introducing into her writing style. I will be eagerly awaiting Lullaby, the next book in the Watersong series. I've very happy to see that there are 4 books planned in the series. So I just have to say it, I love the cover of Wake!! It's so pretty. I'm really a fan of the underwater covers that have been coming out lately. Maybe because I like the blue that comes with it. The font that is used is also one that I'm a fan of. I find the cover fairly simple overall and it doesn't really give anything away in the book. So really enjoying the covers of this series, the one for Lullaby is on Goodreads and is equally as nice, they will look very nice on my shelf. Wake follows Gemma and Harper, two sisters that are very different. Gemma is a star swimmer, she is hoping to get to the Olympics someday. She's carefree, pretty and has a thing for Alex, the bor next door. Harper has given up her childhood to look after Gemma after their mom was in an accident. She is smart and reserved and Alex is her oldest friend. It's all she can do to try and keep Gemma out of trouble. Suddenly boys are going missing, but Gemma is fearless and still continues her nightly swims in the bay. One thing the two sisters can agree on it the new girsl in town, Penn, Lexi and Thea are bad news. Gemma tries to avoid them, but they won't leave her alone. I enjoyed both Gemma and Harper as characters. I would say that Harper is a lot like me, so I was really able to relate to her. Gemma was a bit harder for me to relate with, but she was still a character that I enjoyed getting to know. Both girls are great characters who try to do what is right and they are both falling for guys that they least expected to fall for. Overall this book really surprised me in that it wasn't exactly what I was expecting, in a good way. It was really enjoyable with great characters that I was able to relate with. The story was well written and had small surprises in it. If you like mythology, you should definitely add this one to your TBR. Amanda Hocking is a great author and I will be reading more by her soon! With a bit of paranormal, mythology and romance, Wake has made it's way to one of my favorite reads. It's a book that I will be highly recommending. Definitely check out this series!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful! Another 3rd person POV, score! I really liked how this book was an easy read. I was completely relax reading this (I am not saying there weren't any action or suspense, I am saying that it wasn't mind boggling hard to understand). In fact there was tons of action and suspense! Gemma seemed like any other teen girl. She was bubbly and fun. She really reminded me of Winry. WOW two Winry in the same week? (Check out my review of The Light of Asteria review). I loved Harper. I definitely think she was my favourite character within the book. She was so responsible but not the type that reek of perfection. She worried about Gemma even though she was not older by much. I really felt for her. Natalie, their mother, was one of the best characters. She was just so present and vivid as a person. She just drew you in and I couldn't help but love her. And Brian, he was awesome too. He made me laugh out loud as well. Oh this reminds me! The situation with the parents in this book was different than most YA. The parents didn't die, but they weren't perfect (let's leave it like that). And oh Alex, how I loved him. He was a total geek! He was adorable, good-looking with hints of awkwardness. I just couldn't help myself from laughing sometimes, and this was legit laugh out loud what I am talking about. He was the type of person that didn't fit into just one category (bad boy, funny guy etc). He was a mix of everything wonderful. But I'm more a Daniel girl. ;) Just think about what I said about Alex and times that by, I don't know, 10? or maybe 20? Daniel, what a dude! He was just...ugh, I can't explain it. Funny, strong, and protective. He was the perfect guy, without being too perfect that he becomes unreal. Oh I wish I can explain better but I just can't put it in words. You know that feeling when something is just so perfect that you can't pin down why it is so perfect and then you just end up feeling this: PCKWFDKMRJSKDBWKSJDWKSJ? Well that's what I'm feeling. I think one of the reasons why I didn't find him unreal was that he was not described as a hot guy with muscles under his tight shirt and with strong arms and hair that blow in the sea breeze. I mean he was definitely gorgeous but Amanda didn't mention that every second sentence. And I think a lot of the other characters are like that in this book. Amanda didn't forcefully "promote" how great her characters were. She allowed the characters to form by themselves, and in doing so, the characters became so lovable and enjoyable to read. Oh yeah! And I just want to squeeze it in there that Harper and Daniel...OTP! Gosh this book! I have sooooo much feels for this book! XOKWRBKSNFRKKCKDWK! I am definitely having a moment here. Oh god. This book! It was the same thing with Fullmetal Alchemist. The same exact feeling! Penn, Lexi, and Thea totally reminded me of Azula, Ty-Lee, and Mai, especially when they camped around the fire. Ember island much? ;) This book was a pleasure to read. I can't wait for the next instalments!
