Long acknowledged as one of rock music's most intelligent and literary performers, Pete Townshend - guitarist, songwriter, singer and founding member of The Who - at last tells his wild story in this candid and immersive autobiography.

Raised in west London by an eccentric grandmother, while his parents were off living the early post-war, rock 'n' roll lifestyle, Townshend describes a frenetic childhood of displacement and abuse. Then, in high school, everything changed when he met Roger Daltrey and formed a band that would travel the world, earning fame, fortune and critical acclaim. In Who I Am, Townshend brings us from the inner sanctum of Eric Clapton's drug-ridden hotel rooms to the feet of Jimi Hendrix and his electric kool-aid guitar; from the first trial performance of Townshend's rock opera, Tommy, in a London bar to his infamous arrest (and acquittal) on child pornography charges.

With his trademark eloquence, fierce intelligence and brutal honesty, Pete Townshend has created a work of literature that stands as a primary source for popular music's greatest epoch. Readers will be confronted by a man laying bare who he is, an artist who has asked for nearly sixty years: Who are you?

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Who I Am I had a hard time getting through this book. I am not a big fan of the who to begin with but I generally enjoy the rock and roll memoirs. He wrote very personally and revealed a lot of things about himself and others that I really didn't want to know. The overall tone of the book was really depressing and I felt that he was over analyzing his feelings and playing psychiatrist for himself. I managed to finish it but overall did not enjoy it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Frank and honest Fascinating read. Less a rock star history that Townshend sharing his inner life - the ups and the many downs. It was incredibly frank -- something I expected since he's always been that way. #plumreview

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Peter Townshend Opens Up! Introspective biography that goes deep into music genius Peter Townshend's psyche. As a Who fan, I wanted to read more about the songs and albums not so much about Peter's inability to be faithful to his wife or his internal issues. Still a good read but not for the casual Who fan. At times, way too depressing and not enough joy about the Who.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Who I am OK but got tired of the stream of consciousness style of writing. I have always been a Who fan so enjoyed the stories but was glad when I got to the end.
