Reviews

Rated 5 out of 5 by from You will fall in love with Beatrice Potter all over again! As a little girl I loved the Beatrix Potter books and as an elementary school teacher I always made sure my classroom contained her books. Then later as the school librarian I had a complete section of my library dedicated to her work. I found her tiny books enchanting and the creative ideas within whisked you away to a magical world that thrived behind hedges, under piles of mown grass and on the soggy brink of a pond sprinkled with lily pads. I am excited to share this book today with you as I believe Beatrix Potter books are timeless classics that everyone should have the opportunity to enjoy. Her books have graced book shelves for more than 100 plus years after she first debuted, "The Tale of Peter Rabbit", which was originally self-published. Born in 1866 and growing up in the strict Victorian era, Ms. Potter was fiercely independent and "unwavering curiosity lead her to become a cryptographer, an amateur scientist, an award-winning farmer, a political activist, and revolutionary conservationist and a forward thinking business woman." She broke many glass ceilings and accomplished so much for a woman of wealth in an era when women were expected to stay in the shadows and follow the strict rules of society. To celebrate this remarkable woman's 15th birthday is a delight for anyone who is a fan of contemporary children's book illustrators. Such esteemed illustrators like David Wiesner, Chris Haughton, Jen Corace, Renata Liwska, Brendan Wenzel, Dan Santat and Tony DiTerlizzi, to greats like Rosemary Wells, Peggy Rathmann, Wendell Minor, Brian Pinkney and Tommie de Paola. Fans of Potter will delight in their interpretation of their favourite beloved characters. Nine of Potter's books are featured, with portions reprinted, along with a brief paragraph about the origins of each book and remembrances from contributors. It was thrilling to turn page after page and and see Potter's original drawings next to new interpretations. They lead me back one more time into magical, whimsical worlds that were designed by an extraordinarily talented storyteller and artist. It is such a treat to read this book and I know you will love it just as much as I did.... guaranteed!
