about

Read A Christmas Carol, The Easy Way!

* This edition of A Christmas Carol contains the original text with Easynotes. Easynotes are unobtrusive footnotes which explain subtle references and sayings within A Christmas Carol.

For example, in Stave One of A Christmas Carol Charles Dickens writes:

"But the wisdom of our ancestors is in the simile..."

Unless you have an extensive knowledge of Victorian politics, you mightn't have picked up that Dickens is making a dig at a speech made by a conservative political philosopher named Edmund Burke. Burke is arguing that our ancestors were wise to colonize the world and to give the natives back their land would be utter madness! Dickens obviously disagrees.

It may seem a little geeky, but these are phrases Dickens expected his audience to understand and knowing what they mean can add a whole new element to the story.

Easynotes are designed to be as unobtrusive as possible: whenever there's an unusual phrase it'll be underlined and if you want to check out the meaning, you can click the link to find out more. Of course if you want to just say "Bah, Humbug!" to all of that you can ignore any underlined words and just get on with the story!
