Reviews

Rated 5 out of 5 by from LOVE MWT Megan Whalen Turner never disappoints. Ever. Even when you're beginning to think that maybe she might, she turns up in a blaze of glory that has you grinning to the very end. This book diverges from Eugenides' story and focuses instead on Sophos becoming Sounis. He starts off complaining about tutors who would rather teach him swordplay than poetry, but he's quickly jerked out of his idealic life when his villa is ransacked and he's kidnapped and sold into slavery on one of his own baron's villas. He goes from that, to struggling king to be, to actual king, and it's really awesome. I don't know how I ever doubt. Turner has a gift for gritty realism and uncomfortable times where you doubt that your hero is any sort of hero at all, when you're saturated in frustration and angst at the helplessness of Eugenides or Sophos. But don't ever worry, because nearly every time, they come around with a massive twist that leaves you cheering. While I originally mourned the lack of Gen, Sophos became this powerful, decisive character that I absolutely loved. Not to mention, the romance between Eddis and Sounis was awesome. These books are just so gritty and realistic and tense and full of compromise and nuance and artistry and I seriously love all of them and I want more like, right this second.
