From the author of The Star-Touched Queen comes a beautiful lush fantasy, Roshani Chokshi's A Crown of Wishes.

Gauri, the princess of Bharata, has been taken as a prisoner of war by her kingdom's enemies. Faced with a future of exile and scorn, Gauri has nothing left to lose. Hope unexpectedly comes in the form of Vikram, the cunning prince of a neighboring land and her sworn enemy kingdom. Unsatisfied with becoming a mere puppet king, Vikram offers Gauri a chance to win back her kingdom in exchange for her battle prowess. Together, they'll have to set aside their differences and team up to win the Tournament of Wishes - a competition held in a mythical city where the Lord of Wealth promises a wish to the victor.

Reaching the tournament is just the beginning. Once they arrive, danger takes on new shapes: poisonous courtesans and mischievous story birds, a feast of fears and twisted fairy revels.

Every which way they turn new trials will test their wit and strength. But what Gauri and Vikram will soon discover is that there's nothing more dangerous than what they most desire.

Roshani Chokshi is the New York Times bestselling author of The Star-Touched Queen. Her work has appeared in Strange Horizons, Shimmer, and Book Smugglers. Her short story, "The Star Maiden," was longlisted for the British Fantasy Science Award.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of the books that I just could not stop reading. Unpredictable right to the end, I highly recommend this novel. This is a wonderful story, full of magic, adventure, and, yes, love. Beyond the unique plot, what really shined for me as a reader were the characters. Gauri is an unconventional, strong warrior-princess, who has had to fight her whole life for what she has wanted. Vikram is a sensitive, funny prince whose happy-go-lucky persona hides a depth of feeling. On the surface, they have nothing in common and yet they are thrown together as partners in a life and death competition from which only one will ever return. One of the books that I just could not stop reading. Unpredictable right to the end, I highly recommend this novel.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved this Novel! I liked this much better than "The Star-Touched Queen". Gauri is aggressive, merciless, and in need of a break while Vikram is clever, cynical, and calm. I related to Vikram very closely -- he's my favourite character. I found Gauri refreshing -- she is so different and raw than other tough YA heroines. Even though her conflict takes place because of politics in her world, but her emotions were so well described, I found it easier to understand her. By the end of the novel, Gauri became one of my favourite characters of all-time. The love story here seems more realistic too -- first enemies, then Gauri and Vikram slowly become friends, and then they fall in love. I loved the world building and balance of action and dialogue. And of course, the prose is beautiful! If it helped me out of a year-long reading slump, it may help you too. Another note: Gauri's perspective is told from first person, but Vikram's is from third person. Maybe Chokshi couldn't get into his head properly because he's a boy, but that's fine. It doesn't detract from the plot, unless you're not into multi-POV.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from When the sequel is better than the original I really liked The Star-Touched Queen, Roshani Chokshi's first book, but I LOVE A Crown of Wishes. Gauri is merciless, aggressive, mistrustful, and cynical; Vikram is clever, empathic, and a believer. With elements of romance and comedy set against a backdrop of emotional upheaval, desperate desire, and the darkest depths of the soul, A Crown of Wishes weaves an intricate tapestry of intertexuality and foregrounds the importance of storytelling. No one story exists in isolation, and stories are how we keep memories and legacies alive.
