about

A breathtaking thriller featuring "political and amorous intrigues, cold-blooded murder, and financial crises" (San Francisco Chronicle), from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of A Column of Fire

In 1866, tragedy strikes the exclusive Windfield School when a young student drowns in a mysterious accident. His death and its aftermath initiate a spiraling circle of treachery that will span three decades and entwine many lives.

From the exclusive men’s clubs and brothels that cater to every dark desire of London’s upper class to the dazzling ballrooms and mahogany-paneled suites of the manipulators of the world’s wealth, one family is splintered by a shared legacy. But greed, fed by the shocking truth of a boy’s death, must be stopped, or the dreams of a nation will die.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best I've read in a while This was my first dip into the literary world of Ken Follett and I'm sure glad I got on board. I tend to pursue books that teach me something, help me to better understand human nature and myself(ie. fall on your knees, shes come undone) - so when I began this book I was a bit skeptical becuase I thought it would be a book equvilant of junk food (no real nutritional value). What I soon discovered was a book that had it all-- characters to love and hate, plot twists, intrigue and a few naughty bits. This is a great book for a rainy weekend--it'll keep you page turning. I've passed this book along to friend and I'm sure she'll do the same!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Dangerous Fortune A very entertaining book, with all the elements I really enjoy -- sex, greed and power. It follows the lives of a family in the world of banking. A great read for anyone who loved As the Crow Flies by Jeffrey Archer.
