The First Bess Crawford Mystery!

“Readers who can’t get enough of Maisie Dobbs, the intrepid World War I battlefield nurse in Jacqueline Winspear’s novels…are bound to be caught up in the adventures of Bess Crawford.”
New York Times Book Review

Charles Todd, author of the resoundingly acclaimed Ian Rutledge crime novels (“One of the best historical series being written today” —Washington Post Book World) debuts an exceptional new protagonist, World War I nurse Bess Crawford, in A Duty to the Dead. A gripping tale of perilous obligations and dark family secrets in the shadows of a nightmarish time of global conflict, A Duty to the Dead is rich in suspense, surprise, and the impeccable period atmosphere that has become a Charles Todd trademark.

“Another winner....Todd again excels at vivid atmosphere and the effects of war in this specific time and place. Grade: A.”
Cleveland Plain Dealer

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A Duty to the Dead I didn't realize that this book was going to be a murder mystery when I picked it up, but was thrilled when I found out. combining a mystery and WW1 was a great read and I can't wait to continue the series.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Another mystery series by Charles Todd I thoroughly enjoyed reading Charles Todd's Insp. Rutledge series and now I've started with Bess Crawford (related to one of my favourite recurring characters in the Rutledge mysteries). A forward thinking nurse in WW1, full of compassion and a sense of right, I'm looking forward more of her adventures.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A story that is highly believable The writing team that is Charles Todd uses history and fact in such a way that the characters of this story take on life and reality, giving the reader reason to wonder if this is truly fiction; the story is well written, the characters well crafted, and the reader comes to the end of the novel, unwilling to read the end, sad to leave the friends met along the way - a sign of a well-written novel.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Duty to the dead I liked his writing style, also his stories are very much possible close to life. This very well could have happen

Editorial Reviews

“This is a wonderful new mystery series that will let us see the horrors of World War I through the eyes of Bess Crawford, a battlefield nurse. A Duty to the Dead is a richly realistic depiction of both the era and people who lived through it.
