A GAME OF THRONES
A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE: BOOK ONE

Long ago, in a time forgotten, a preternatural event threw the seasons out of balance. In a land where summers can last decades and winters a lifetime, trouble is brewing. The cold is returning, and in the frozen wastes to the north of Winterfell, sinister forces are massing beyond the kingdom’s protective Wall. To the south, the king’s powers are failing—his most trusted adviser dead under mysterious circumstances and his enemies emerging from the shadows of the throne. At the center of the conflict lie the Starks of Winterfell, a family as harsh and unyielding as the frozen land they were born to. Now Lord Eddard Stark is reluctantly summoned to serve as the king’s new Hand, an appointment that threatens to sunder not only his family but the kingdom itself.

Sweeping from a harsh land of cold to a summertime kingdom of epicurean plenty, A Game of Thrones tells a tale of lords and ladies, soldiers and sorcerers, assassins and bastards, who come together in a time of grim omens. Here an enigmatic band of warriors bear swords of no human metal; a tribe of fierce wildlings carry men off into madness; a cruel young dragon prince barters his sister to win back his throne; a child is lost in the twilight between life and death; and a determined woman undertakes a treacherous journey to protect all she holds dear. Amid plots and counter-plots, tragedy and betrayal, victory and terror, allies and enemies, the fate of the Starks hangs perilously in the balance, as each side endeavors to win that deadliest of conflicts: the game of thrones.

Unparalleled in scope and execution, A Game of Thrones is one of those rare reading experiences that catch you up from the opening pages, won’t let you go until the end, and leave you yearning for more.

George R. R. Martin was born on September 20, 1948 in Bayonne, New Jersey. He began writing at an early age, selling monster stories for pennies to neighborhood children. Rated 5 out of 5 by from READ IT!! long story short, if you love the show, you will looovvvveee the book! I started watching Game of Thrones first (hooked immediately) but for some reason put off reading it for a while. When I finally decided to give it a go, I never looked back! Highly Recommend!! #plumreview

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Such an amazing story Everything about this book was amazing and so well done. It is both plot and character driven, the cast of characters is amazing! Different characters having different points of views really moves the story along, and you learn which characters you really care for and who you do not. The plot of this story is also really well done, a lot goes down, obviously a lot of death. Do not get too attached to anyone! Overall such a fun read, it was perfect to read during this fall!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from The book pulls you in! Though it took a few chapters for me to feel like I was into the story, I truly enjoyed the series and couldn't set the books down. There are lots of typos and errors throughout the paperbacks, but other than that, I have no complaints about the series and I highly recommend them to anyone who, like me, watched the show first but wants more content!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from a GREAT read a little late to read these (since i already watched the shows), but this is a fantastic read. Fantasy isn't my typical genre but this is such a well written book that I couldn't put it down.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from It's not that good Being an avid Fantasy reader, I picked this book up because of it's popularity among readers. I found the plot to be all over the place with many different characters being introduced just as you are trying to understand the previous character. The plot itself is very political in nature with less world building that I typically enjoy. I would pass on this unless you are prepared for at least 2 read - throughs to properly understand the story and it's progression.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Brilliant Let me start by saying I do not read fantasy....not even the epic Lord of the Rings. But my son just kept after me to read this book, and thank-you son this is one of the best books I have ever read. The way George R.R. Martin introduces all his characters is amazing, it is intimate. His description, it is vivid. The suspense, it builds to a point were you are literally on the edge of your seat. I cannot say enough about this book, just that it will make you crave for the next in the series. To all fans of reading, do not pass up this book, it’s brilliant!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from If you like LOTR As a lifelong fan of Tolkien, I always find myself looking for the next best thing. This is it. Wondrously original and so rich in the history of Westeros. Kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I couldn't put it down! From the first pages, I was hooked. Great character development and dialogue so natural that much of it was lifted straight into the tv series. I strongly recommend this for sword & sorcery lovers.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great story Game of Thrones is great, but there is quite a bit of information to take in and almost too many characters to remember. that doesn't take away from it though- it's still a good read.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good I loved all of the different point of views and the many sides of the same story that they offered. this is more of a political book in my opinion, so if thats not your thing you should probably stick to the show.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Brillant I had read this book all the way back that many years ago when it was first published. Whenever a new book came out in the series, I would re-read the series. This first book in the series "A Game of Thrones" has continued to put me in awe on how the story can captivate us even in chapter one. It has never stopped to fascinate me again and again. Brilliant work from the master George R R Martin.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So captivating! I know understand why people are GoT obsessed!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Did not finish I enjoyed the first few chapters of this book. The story was interesting even if there was way too much detail (reminiscent of the Lord of the Rings books). The change of perspectives were OK at first as I was interested in the separate stories, but then the perspectives changed again, and again, etc. and I was just lost as to who was who and what was happening. This is a major pet peeve of mine and I had trouble following. This could have been an excellent story but so many characters and completely different viewpoints ruined it for me unfortunately.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely Amazing Everything about this book is awesome. The world building is impressive, the characters are fantastic, and I cannot stress how much I love it. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than the show George R. R. Martin really knows how to keep the reader in suspense. He doesn't give into the need to stick with one voice - and multiple voices are present in the various points of view we read from. It's something you need to stick with from beginning to end - long, but worth it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Game of Thrones Richly imagined, with a deep tapestry of history myth and magic lending political machinations that special flair, Martian's Game of Thrones offers a spectacle of promises, sorrows, desires leading to treachery all wrapped up in a neat package of sexual gamesmanship and sorcerous intrigue. I highly recommend it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Eye opening story An absolutely amazing story that rips you out of the comfort of knowing the character are immortal and will always triumph over evil.A book that's so well written half of the story isn't even on the pages but is subtly implied by the characters and the author. A book with a world so vast it contains dozens of regions, cultures, ethnicities and far more characters than you'll ever be able to keep track of. Read it and realize what a small world fantasy used to be.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best fantasy book series I was initially uninterested in the book, but once I started reading it, I became more and more pulled into the stories of each of the characters. This book, like the rest of the series, is a complete work of art from start to finish. I couldn't put it down, and this book sits atop my list of all-time favorites. Definitely recommend for anyone into a dramatic, fantastical read.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great book I had already seen season one of the show when I read this which would often ruin the story. Not in this case. It is so richly told that I could hardly put it down

Rated 2 out of 5 by from A Good Read, But Not For Me So I decided to join the band wagon. Everyone I knew had either read the books, or they were watching the show. So I decided to read the series. I had a few biases coming in to the book, I had heard about the show and it didn't sound very appealing to me. For the most part I enjoyed reading the first book of the series, but once I finished the book I realized I didn't particularly care about any of the characters so I didn't continue with the series. That's my take on it, but I'm sure other people would love this series. If just wasn't for me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredible read! This is exactly the type of book where you think "I'll just read one more chapter", but 2 hours later you find yourself still reading because you NEED to know what happens next. I love how each chapter is a different character - makes it much more interesting!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Epic read I loved slipping into the world of Westeros, it entranced me from the beginning. What I love about this series is that I get to see this story from a number of different characters' point of view. It makes the story that much more exciting, as the little blips of someone's story ends at an exciting moment that wants to keep reading to find out what happens next. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, which is vivid with detail.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Magical George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire is one of the best and most detailed worlds I have ever had the pleasure of reading since being immersed in the world of Harry Potter. Everyone says the book is better than the series/movie, but boy is it ever true here! So much thought went into creating this deep universe with a rich and intense history. Every character thought out wonderfully. There's so much information inside one book, it's amazing! Luckily he does give you a map and an annex for the family trees of the major houses in the books, cause you really need them! For people who have seen the first season of the show, this book will be a bit familiar, but so much better.
Date published: 2017-03-04
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing I loved the book so much! I couldn't put it down. The story was so detailed that it really brings you into the world George R.R. Martin created.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent book A great start to the series. Love how the story is told through different character POV's. If you like the TV show and want more, I suggest reading the books as they have more details.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Even Better Than The Show The book was, as always, even better than the movie (TV show). George R.R. Martin has created an intricately detailed fantasy world rivalling that of J.R.R. Tolkein. Told in enthralling detail the story expands upon what was shown in the show and only promises to get better as the series progresses. I am excited to continue the saga.
Date published: 2017-02-27
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Fantasy Starter The show follows this book closely but it gives more background detail and is just as interesting if not more so than the show.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good intro to fantasy for non-fantasy readers Admittedly, I cheated and watched the HBO adaptation of Game of Thrones before I read the book. Despite the TV series' impressive loyalty to the original text, it was 100% worth it to read the book afterwards. The page count allows Martin plenty of space for detail, and plenty of time to genuinely despise/love his characters. Game of Thrones is a great transition book for people who typically don't read fantasy. It's less about mystical creatures and more about political drama in a seemingly-real historical context. My husband (who thinks Harry Potter plays witch stick ball against Slythendor) really enjoyed Game of Thrones, especially Tyrion Lannister. If you're willing to deal with some fairly explicit (read: typical HBO) content, Game of Thrones is really a must-read.
Date published: 2017-02-24
Rated 5 out of 5 by from So good This book is an amazing first novel in the series. If you have seen season 1 of the television show, some of this might feel a bit redundant as the first season is very faithful to the first book. But reading this is an absolute must if you want to be able to follow what`s going on in the rest of the books
Date published: 2017-02-21
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Must read! The books far surpass the tv show (which is amazing itself)!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Epic! Great book. Read long time ago before the show was around. I read through very quickly. Loved the characters, story and setting. Also really enjoyed the chapters by different characters view point. Want to read Dance with Dragons but might have to go back and re-read books 1-4 since it has been so long.
Date published: 2017-02-13
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great escapist stuff, super story telling An epic tale, woven with more threads than are visible to the human eye, and it swallows you, and then spits you out hanging over a cliff by one of those threads, which, as you have learned by now, are all very fragile indeed. Keep writing George RR Martin, this is a tale worthy of rainy Sunday afternoons, long journeys, and staying up all night...
Date published: 2017-02-11
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Keep watching the show, forget about the book. This is one of the rare cases I love more the adaptation than the book. The creators of the series have done more with the story than the autor. The only thing I liked in the book was the Tyrion chapters and some Arya chapters.
Date published: 2017-02-09
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Adult Fantasy This book removes all the tropes of the standard fantasy genre and instead introduces you into a world of very human emotions and decisions that cast long shadows. For the person who is looking to expand their knowledge of the fantasy genre beyond the basics, get this. For the person who is looking for a good geopolitical thriller get this. You will not be disappointed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Big commitment but worth it So these books are big. They're dense and it takes a while to get through them. But that's what makes them so good! You get to know the world so well and the people and politics and everything! I've only seen a couple of episodes of the show and if the show puts you off because of all the nudity and sex and whatnot, don't let it influence your opinion of the book because there's actually way less of it in the books. I haven't finished the series yet but i heard it only gets better (except for book 4) so GET ON THIS BANDWAGON!
Date published: 2017-01-24
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Worth the Read So, like many people, I read "A Game of Thrones" after watching the first season of the HBO series based upon the series of novels because I was curious to see how the television series measured up. I wasn't overly surprised to discover the book was infinitely better than the show. It was a little dry in parts and the shifting from character POVs was, at times, a little broken, but overall I enjoyed the story and characters and how everything developed. If you are looking for a medieval fantasy world then Martin certainly delivers with a well plotted world, complete with in depth, detailed backstories and world histories that rival Tolkien's depth.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A song of praise I just finished reading this in the paper back form, not mass market. I felt if I had read the mass market the spine would be destroyed since the book was quite thick. I'm not usually a fan of books that go back and forth, however this was well done. Lots of characters, sometimes a little confusing since many have the same or similar names. I look forward to reading the rest. Hope you enjoy too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from You'll be hooked After watching the first season and falling in love with the show I knew I had to read the books. The books are sooo much better than the show, there a few different things that take place which makes it interesting to read and I imagined places and characters differently than on the show (in a good way). By far my favourite fantasy series.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from a different approach I've always loved fantasy books, and this one rose to popularity because of the author's different approach in the genre. he proved that fantasy novels are not just always about elves, dwarves etc that most of the others followed after tolkien

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Adored I adored this book. The plot is so detailed, the character development is amazing. Although this book spends a lot of time establishing roles, at no point does it ever become boring. There is action in every chapter and characters you will fall in love with. Highly reccommend.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A Game of Thrones- Simply Amazing Went beyond my expectations while I was reading this novel. A bit slow at first, but it picks up near the middle all the way through to the end. It gave great character depth, and provided different perspectives, which I greatly enjoyed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from After watching the show, I wanted to read the series I don't read fantasy these days, so I wasn't sure if I'd be into GoT as a book, despite having devoured the series (finally catching up over the course of several weeks). I was most interested in reading how the books mirrored, strayed from and added context to the TV series. I really enjoyed the read (I don't know the last time I read 700+ pages of anything). I'm not sure if I would have been as into the book if I wasn't already dedicated to the HBO version of the characters, though. #plumreview

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good but annoying The different point of view each chapter made this book difficult to read for me. I would get heavily invested in whoever I was reading...and then it switched...which was fine...but then the character wouldn't have another point of view for another 200 pages...which bothered me. The overall story was interesting but definitely takes some time to get into.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from great high fantasy read A Game of Thrones is a fantasy book which has a very complex story. It is about knights, kings, family as well as betrayals and drama. It is told from the point of view of many characters, which can become confusing at times, especially at the beginning since you are not familiar with the characters yet. But once you get used to it, it becomes very interesting because that way you can see what every character is thinking. Just make sure to read the name of the character at the beginning of the chapter when you start another or else you will get mixed up. The descriptions were really well written even though they could be long at times and I sometimes surprised myself jumping a couple of paragraphs several times, but the writing of the author was still really enjoyable. Also, just like for the descriptions, since it is a massive book I felt like some parts were dragging on a little too long, but then just a couple of pages later, the action was starting again and it was all forgotten. My favorite characters are either Arya or Daenerys. Both girls are such independent and strong women, I just couldn’t help but admire them. For the character I hate the most, let’s say that I cannot wait for that little sh*t of Joffrey to be dead already… In conclusion, I recommend this book to everyone who enjoys a good fantasy book. I am for sure going to continue on with the series even though I am probably going to read a couple of other books in between each one. I am also watching the TV series at the same time. I have two episodes left of the first season and so far it is as good as the book. It helps to put a face on the characters since there are so many…

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Epic Only one way to describe this novel (and series): Epic. The world-building is extensive, and the characters complex. I wish GRRM had aged up a few of the characters (something he's said himself I believe). Buckle up, this book is a long haul!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A great novel for newcomers to the fantasy genre I read this book a couple of years before the HBO series started, and it was a great experience. The world building is rich and intriguing, the characters are fleshed out and likeable, and the plot is non-stop and full of mystery. Books > TV Show.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Meh I decided to read the book before diving into the show. I found it took a lot to really get into the story and by the end of this book I still felt like I really didn't know any characters but I'll continue on and hope it improves.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from *Applause* I cannot believe I waited this long to read this masterpiece. I honestly don't know how George R.R. Martin managed to pull all of this off. Everything was so well crafted and thought of that everything just MADE SENSE. The world building was fantastic and the character developments were astounding. George R.R. Martin built an entire world and missed not a single thing. I found that nothing was redundant. Everything that he laid out in this book was necessary. Usually, I find that lengthy books like this one beats around the bush. This book was different. George R.R. Martin made it so that every little detail mattered. Just truly impressive. This deserves nothing less than a five star rating.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Hard to get into but still a great read! I initially bought this book after the show was out to see what all the fuss was all about! While I found the plots interesting and well written I found the multiple perspectives very difficult to keep up with. I couldn't get into the book and ended up watching the show - after watching the first season I started the book again and absolutely loved it! Very well written but maybe a little too detailed!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from I don't see what the big deal is I picked up this book to see what the fuss was all about and I didn't particularly enjoy it. While some of the story lines are interesting and the characters are lovely, the many, many, many characters and story lines make for a confusing read. I found myself having to constantly refer back to the family trees and to previous chapters to re-orient myself which made the book very tedious to read.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of the Best Fantasy Series Since Tolkien This book is a must read. In the field of fantasy, many many books feel (or even copy) Tolkien's formula. Not so here. Truly a breath of fresh air in the fantasy genre.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from EPIC!!!! Hate using the word but definitely an epic read. Have to admit it was a little hard to get into as there were so many characters right off the bat and different POV's to get a handle on. However once I did, it was a non stop ride. Could not put it down. The best Fantasy series I have read since the Lord of the Rings!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from In love with this book Iam in love with this book and feel that I am safe in saying I will love the whole series. I admit that I am quite surpised to how much I love this book. I don't usually read fantasy novels, or have I really been interested in reading them. I usually read mystery, suspense novels, along with the occasional happy go lucky novel. After a while, I was getting bored of these genres. I took a chance on games of thrones and wow. Iam so glad I did. I can not believe how good, no, amazing this book is. The characters and surounderings are greatly detailed and its beautifully written. The book has everything to friendship, love, revenge, betrayal, lust,. I love how the boom also has wolves as pets and also dragons. There are a lot of characters in the book and at first I found it a bit to keep track of who is who and what family they belong too. at about 100 pages, I found I knew the characters now with ease and just in case you forget, Martin has all the characters categorized under their families and rank I. The back of the boom, with easy and fast look up. This book is so good that even if you can't get to it for a few days, you know that you can pick it up and get right back into it, the storyline and then again won't want to put it down. Boom number 2, yes please.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Defining moment This book and the ones that follow are the finest fiction books written in this or any century. The detph of the saga and the story told are the stuff of legend. The multiple viewpoints, intrigue and battles that rage throughout are epic in scope, yet there is a human quality. The reader will be drawn in to this world and not wish for the story to end.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing The plot, the characters, the dialog. It's all excellent. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Game of Thrones If you like fantasy, you will love this series, Fire and Ice by George R. R. Martin! The books can be somewhat confusing and are extremely detailed, so you can't speed read them! He draws you quickly into this wondrous world he's written. I've watched the first three seasons of the HBO Series, " Game of Thrones " but I have always found reading the books a much more satisfying experience. The only complaint I have is the author is slow getting out book 6 & 7!! Be prepared, if you read this series, he really leaves you hanging at the conclusion of book 5!!! I want to call him and tell him to hurry up already :-)
