#1 New York Times bestselling author Louise Penny pulls back the layers to reveal a brilliant and emotionally powerful truth in her latest spellbinding novel.

When an intricate old map is found stuffed into the walls of the bistro in Three Pines, it at first seems no more than a curiosity. But the closer the villagers look, the stranger it becomes.

Given to Armand Gamache as a gift the first day of his new job, the map eventually leads him to shattering secrets. To an old friend and older adversary. It leads the former Chief of Homicide for the Sûreté du Québec to places even he is afraid to go. But must.

And there he finds four young cadets in the Sûreté academy, and a dead professor. And, with the body, a copy of the old, odd map.

Everywhere Gamache turns, he sees Amelia Choquet, one of the cadets. Tattooed and pierced. Guarded and angry. Amelia is more likely to be found on the other side of a police line-up. And yet she is in the academy. A protégée of the murdered professor.

The focus of the investigation soon turns to Gamache himself and his mysterious relationship with Amelia, and his possible involvement in the crime. The frantic search for answers takes the investigators back to Three Pines and a stained glass window with its own horrific secrets.

For both Amelia Choquet and Armand Gamache, the time has come for a great reckoning.

LOUISE PENNY is the author of the #1 New York Times and Globe and Mail bestselling series of Chief Inspector Armand Gamache novels. She has won numerous awards, including a CWA Dagger and the Agatha Award (six times), and was a finalist for the Edgar Award for Best Novel. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this author Louise Penny had me hooked from the very first novel in this series! This novel in the series introduces us to a new character by the name of Amelia Choquet. She is pierced, tattooed, and angry and streetwise. While initially declined entrance into the Academy, Gamache admits her. It is not until the end of the novel that the connection between Gamache and Amelia is revealed which allows Gamache to put something long held to rest. Some of Gamache's choices in this novel may seem out of character; however, if one flies higher to see the bigger picture, a greater understanding is gained.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love the series I've read all of the book about Armand Gamache. He's the sort of character you always stand behind. The re-occurring Three Pines characters are all unique and well-written. I have a growing soft spot for Ruth. The cadets are ok but not the reason I pick up Louise Penny's books. Read all of them! Also I love visiting Three Pines in the books. It sounds like an amazing haven to retire to.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Reckon on a good read Louise Penny never fails to deliver a suspenseful story. In this installment of the Armand Gamache series, we see a flawed Gamache. As much as he tries to do the right thing, events don't always turn out as he would expect and people still get hurt.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from ok It was a real page turner. I couldn't put it down. it kept me guessing right to the end. The only thing preventing me from giving it 5* was that I found the ending to be a bit far fetched. I am still not sure how I feel about how it all played out....
