#1 New York Times bestselling author Louise Penny pulls back the layers to reveal a brilliant and emotionally powerful truth in her latest spellbinding novel.

When an intricate old map is found stuffed into the walls of the bistro in Three Pines, it at first seems no more than a curiosity. But the closer the villagers look, the stranger it becomes.

Given to Armand Gamache as a gift the first day of his new job, the map eventually leads him to shattering secrets. To an old friend and older adversary. It leads the former Chief of Homicide for the Sûreté du Québec to places even he is afraid to go. But must.

And there he finds four young cadets in the Sûreté academy, and a dead professor. And, with the body, a copy of the old, odd map.

Everywhere Gamache turns, he sees Amelia Choquet, one of the cadets. Tattooed and pierced. Guarded and angry. Amelia is more likely to be found on the other side of a police line-up. And yet she is in the academy. A protégée of the murdered professor.

The focus of the investigation soon turns to Gamache himself and his mysterious relationship with Amelia, and his possible involvement in the crime. The frantic search for answers takes the investigators back to Three Pines and a stained glass window with its own horrific secrets.

For both Amelia Choquet and Armand Gamache, the time has come for a great reckoning.

LOUISE PENNY is the author of the #1 New York Times and Globe and Mail bestselling series of Chief Inspector Armand Gamache novels. She has won numerous awards, including a CWA Dagger and the Agatha Award (six times), and was a finalist for the Edgar Award for Best Novel. In 2017, she received the Order of Canada for her contributions ...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Detective Mystery I have read the series of Detective Gamache, and this is the latest one that I have read. This book is so incredibly good. We are treated to Louise's superb writing along with a very serious and complicated mystery. You have to pay attention as you read and you want to because the story is so good. There are lots of characters and possible suspects and I never figured it out until I read it. The book also has a stunning ending, and who knows where Gamaches and Bouviers lives will go next, but I will definitely read the next one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Great Reckoning by Louise Penny I must say that A Great Reckoning is definitely one of my favourites. To say she has done it again is an understatement. if you're a fan, this is another great addition to the series. I very seldom rate mysteries five stars but in this case it is well deserved.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Engaging and character driven This is an engaging character driven mystery crime novel. It follows a man who is trying to clean up a corrupt system. Murder ensues. But, it also includes a few extra bits of intrigue, including an historic mystery that feels a bit like a Agatha Christie. I enjoyed the characters, I enjoyed trying to guess the answers to the various mysteries, and I enjoyed the book. This is the first of the Gamache series I've read (picked at random, because the first wasn't available at the time). I can't wait to read more of the series.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great writing #plumreview What does it say about a Canadian writer that this is #11 in the series and readers are still raving about her stories and clamouring for more. Louise Penny is absolutely the best! While I prefer the stories set in Three Pines, those that stray afield never disappoint. Eagerly awaiting #12.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My Favourite Canadian Author This one was so different than some of the others in the series and quite serious but I enjoyed the slight change in setting and the new characters. The series itself is utterly fantastic and I can't wait for the next one now. Gamache is such a wonderful character and the community of Three Pines is so cozy. Louise Penny's writing rivals anything I've ever read.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Canadian Author Louise Penny writes prose like poetry. Every word seems so carefully chosen, every character so fully realized. If you are looking for a wonderful Canadian writer then look no further. Each book stands alone but you should start with the first and read your way through the series. I cannot say enough good things about this series - I wish I could find Three Pines and retire there!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Another excellent book by Louise Penny! To put it simply, Louise Penny is a brilliant writer. The latest book in the Armand Gamache series, A Great Reckoning, takes us on a journey of discovery about an old map discovered in the wall of a bistro. As with all the other books in the series, the village of Three Pines and the people who live there are major features in the story. Three Pines is a fictional, almost mythical, village that Louis Penny has placed in the Eastern Townships. What Penny does so skillfully is to weave together major plot lines with current issues and fascinating historical sub-plots. While the search for the meaning of the map is exciting, even more compelling is the main story involving the training academy of the Sureté du Québec. Four of the cadets are given the task of researching the map, which ends up drawing them into a more serious crime investigation. Each book in the series can stand alone as a great crime novel, but they are best read as a series. But whether you’re already a fan or you just want to read one book, don’t miss A Great Reckoning. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a better book!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved it! I really enjoyed this story. Louise Penny wove a wonderful story, with plenty of sub-stories. I like the new characters and Clara's new picture. This story is one of the stronger in the series. It's got twists, turns, uncertainties. It has our favorite characters and town. I liked the themes of forgiveness and redemption and how these concepts were interwoven within the plotline. A very touching story on many levels.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Another great read I could not put this book down. I look forward to each new book much the same way I do with friend and family annual letters in the Christmas card. After eleven books, I feel the characters are like old friends and I enjoy " catching" up with them. A great plot that kept me guessing right til the end. Where does she get the plot ideas?
Date published: 2016-11-04
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful as always I discovered Louise Penny last year and have made my way through the entire series. This installment is one of the best. The characters are relatable and feel like old friends. One would think that it could become boring after eleven books, but that is not the case. Penny holds our interest with the plot and the authenticity of her characters keep the stories interesting. I already want to read another one but guess we will have to wait a year for it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better and BETTER with every book! I have been following Louise Penny since I discovered the first book in the series and I am now marking my calendar in anticipation for August when a new one is due. This August was not different and I have to admit, her books are getting better and better as she writes them. One would think that with a series of 11, that you would expect some predictability... nope. Just great writing from an experienced writer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of her Best I was very excited to get my copy of Louise Penny's latest Gamache novel. She is a marvellous story teller. I couldn't put this book down. I kept reading to find out who had committed the murder. She dedicated this book to her husband. Read her notes at the back of the book. A very brave lady and a true love story.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding Series! Louise Penny gives us an array of "Vivid" characters and scenery that are central to her all her books. Some you love, some you hate, but they all make Three Pines a place I would love to live in. She gives Anglos and Francaphones an identity that comes to life, with words, gestures and tag lines, and in the end camaraderie. Her mysteries keep you wanting more. As an avid reader of many topics and subjects, Louise Penny is in my top ten authors residing on my bookshelves. You can read the books out of order but I highly recommend you do not, read them in order to get the most out of all the characters. I am anxiously awaiting book #11
