about

In the celebratory mood of the recently-ended Civil War, Sarah discovers her betrothed has been keeping a devastating secret.

While the tiny town of Wabash, Indiana, celebrates the end of the fighting,            Sara Montgomery attends the parties, but inside she’s fighting a deep sadness. The love of Sara’s life, Rand Campbell, didn’t come back from the front.

So her brother and ailing father persuade her to pledge herself to another man—despite her misgivings. When Sarah finds out that Rand is in fact alive—and that her fiancé Ben Croftner knew it—she indignantly breaks off their engagement.

Croftner doesn’t take rejection lightly—and a single woman with a sick father makes an easy target. He abducts Sarah, his intentions anything but honorable. Then Rand comes to her aid . . . only to reveal that he has been posted at Fort Laramie, Wyoming, and asks her to go with him as his wife.

Will Sarah leave her dying father’s side for the only man she’s ever loved? And what plans are forming in the jealous heart of Ben Croftner?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Finding Your Lost Loved One Can you imagine living though the Civil War and learning that your fiancé is dead, never to return. This is what happened to Sarah Montgomery, and she may never get over her loss. Life must go on, and her father is not about to live much longer, she lives with her brother and his wife, and they all want her to marry a well to do survivor of the horrible war. Ben Croftner appears to be a man that gets what he wants and no one had better to get in his way. This is the man her family wants her to marry, and why not she is not happy and life has been so hard since she lost her Rand. Can you imagine the surprise when Rand reappears and is shocked to find out that Sarah has not waited for him? He thought she loved him, as he still loves her, but now she is engaged to marry Ben? He knows that Ben knew he was alive, so how could this be possible. He had even sent a letter with Ben to give to Sarah. Um, I bet you can guess that Ben is not a very nice man, and he goes on to prove it again, and again, the deeper we get into the book. With the end of this page-turning book we are left up in the air, and I need to know what is going to happen. Rand is on his way to report to Fort Laramie, and he is alone. Thank goodness there is more to come, and I can hardly wait for answers. Thank you Colleen Coble, I love this story! I received this book through Litfuse Publicity Book Tours, and was not required to give a positive review.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from The War Between the States left behind lost loved ones and the hopeful expectations of those remaining at home resurfacing. Friday, March 20, 2015 A Heart's Disguise by Colleen Coble, © 2015 Journey of the Heart series A Heart’s Disguise Part 1 of 6 in the Journey of the Heart series ~ In the midst of end-of-war celebrations, Sarah discovers her betrothed was keeping a devastating secret in A Heart’s Disguise. Will Sarah leave her dying father’s side for the only man she’s ever loved? And what plans are forming in the jealous heart of Ben Croftner? --author Colleen Coble My review: This six-part novella series is a reissue of the Wyoming series, earlier works by Colleen Coble ~ Where Leads the Heart and continuing Plains of Promise, to be enjoyed by new readers and renewed by those who read them when they were first published almost a decade ago. The story begins just after the end of the Civil War in the United States, 1861-1865. The War Between the States left behind lost loved ones and the hopeful expectations of those remaining at home resurfacing. Sarah Montgomery is awaiting news of her beloved Rand Campbell from those returning home. She has not received letters from him and holds on to hope she will receive some word. Wabash, Indiana, 1865 Autumn's chill matched Sarah Montgomery's heart. The war had taken so much from her, and it seemed impossible for life to ever get to a hopeful place. The scent of turning leaves lingered in the air as she sat on a porch rocking chair beside her father, who was huddled in a blanket... --A Heart's Disguise, 1 Papa is dying. So much had transpired, so many memories holding her hopes at bay. But how is it possible to keep your private thoughts hidden away from your countenance? Five months it has been now since Ben came home, declaring that Rand is dead. Dead? How can it be? Papa says to marry Ben; to be taken care of, she and her eight-year-old brother, Joel. She has raised him since infancy when Mama died when he was born. Wade agrees. It's for the best. But whose best, I wonder? Have you made a life decision to please someone else or been unable to back down once you had spoken it? Sarah regrets pleasing others before she is certain. Her older brother Wade is like the prodigal son remaining at home ~ all of it his, but bitterness dwells in his heart. So, I have agreed to marry Ben, but my heart belongs with Rand. Dying moment-by-moment, my days go by in a blur. Soon we are to wed. How do I leave my heart behind? The train comes to a stop at the Wabash depot. A lone figure descends the steep steps, greeted by the old porter, Liam Murphy. Home. Finally home after three long years. I know the plans that I have for you, declares the LORD. They are plans for peace and not disaster, plans to give you a future filled with hope. --Jeremiah 29:11, God's Word® How will Sarah discover hopes renewed? (to be continued in next month's issue...) Rated 5 out of 5 by from Vintage Coble This is the first book in the Journey of the Heart series which includes both Where Leads the Heart and Plains of Promise (originally published in the late 1990s.) These two original titles are being re-released in a serialization format. They have been divided into six novella length books and will be released monthly March through August. So beware -- this one has a cliffhanger ending! It is vintage Coble -- danger lurking around every corner, a villainous villain, a thwarted hero and an earnest heroine who finds herself caught in the middle of conflict...and danger. Did I mention the danger? And the snake-in-the-grass villain? Grrr. You won't be able to turn the pages fast enough and when you come to the end you find that it isn't. There's still much more to come.

Editorial Reviews

This suspenseful post-Civil War historical (the first volume in a six-part series) by Coble ('Rock Harbor' series) will keep the author's growing audience on edge with its intense quick pace; the cliff-hanger ending will leave them eagerly awaiting the next installment. [Barbour originally published this series as four books (Where Leads the Promise; Plains of Promise; The Heart Answers; To Love a Stranger), the first two in 1998 and the second two in 1999. After the rights reverted to Coble, she reworked and divided the stories into six books. According to marketing director Katie Bond, Thomas Nelson is using this series to introduce readers to her early works.---Ed.]
