The dramatic story of Scotland - by charismatic television historian, Neil Oliver.

Scotland is one of the oldest countries in the world with a vivid and diverse past. Yet the stories and figures that dominate Scottish history - tales of failure, submission, thwarted ambition and tragedy - often badly serve this great nation, overshadowing the rich tapestry of her intricate past.

Historian Neil Oliver presents a compelling new portrait of Scottish history, peppered with action, high drama and centuries of turbulence that have helped to shape modern Scotland. Along the way, he takes in iconic landmarks and historic architecture; debunks myths surrounding Scotland's famous sons; recalls forgotten battles; charts the growth of patriotism; and explores recent political developments, capturing Scotland's sense of identity and celebrating her place in the wider world.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved this book! Just finished and loved it! I am in the middle of researching my ancestry so this book was a real treat as many members of my family were part of the great history of Scotland and written about on these pages; it felt like my family history was being brought to life for me. I have learned so much about this great land - some good and some bad but feel now that I know and better understand the history and the people so much more. Highly recommend this book.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A fun introduction to Scottish history An enjoyable and interesting introduction to Scottish history. Neil is an archeologist and historian so the book contains helpful information about Scotland's natural history and geology, he brings her ancient occupants back to life and deals fairly with the politics and issues faced by a more modern Scotland such as religion, the Clans, Scotland's relationship with England, and her own identity.
