It is a story of oppression and fear in a world gone mad with war fever—of Munchkins, Wizards, and Wicked Witches—and especially of a gentle soul and determined survivor who is truly A Lion Among Men.

Gregory Maguire is the bestselling author of Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister, Lost, Mirror Mirror, and the Wicked Years, a series that includes Wicked, Son of a Witch, and A Lion Among Men. Wicked, now a beloved classic, is the basis for the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical of the same name. Maguire has lectured on art, literature...

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Nose dive The quality of the series took a nose dive in quality and enjoyment at this point. There was no need to continue the story; so it didn't feel natural to begin with

Rated 3 out of 5 by from A tad slow but still good I think my imagination must have nodded off half way through this volume, on the whole this tail was still enjoyable

Rated 1 out of 5 by from YUCK This so such a disappointment after loving wicked... it as crude and vulgar and painfully slow

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good read The book can seem a bit slow at times, but ultimately it is a nuanced version of events that might otherwise be overlooked. It is great to get an alternative perspective on the world of Oz, from a point of view of seemingly secondary- or tertiary-level characters. To many readers, it can provide a deeper engagement with the themes set out in previous books; to other readers, however, the slower pace (and the seemingly disconnection manner in which the book is written) may be a turn-off. I recommend the book, however, to those who want to appreciate Oz from many different points of view rather than those of the highest-profile characters.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I Enoyed it! For those who truly love the story line of the Wicked Years, you cannot finish the series without this book. Yes, this book does get slow at times, but in the end the storyline flows well. The ending, I think was great, and it really gets you caught up in the world of OZ according to Gregory Maguire. Overall, I really liked it, again it is hard to get into but if you really love the series so far, you will enjoy this one to.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from WICKED was good, SON OF A WITCH was ok, but this... Like I said, WICKED was good, SON OF A WITCH was ok... I guess. It dragged on and a lot could have been left out but good ending. Now this... A LION AMONG MEN was probably the hardest book to finish as it really dragged on and was literally quite boring. The caption on the back of the book made it seem so interesting but not so. Very disappointing. A lot of loose ends but I can only hope that this will all be wrapped up in OUT OF OZ...Maquire's 4th and final book in the wicked years. You might want to do yourself a favor and check out the library first before opening up your wallet.
