about

There is something about Ove.

At first sight, he is almost certainly the grumpiest man you will ever meet. He thinks himself surrounded by idiots - neighbours who can't reverse a trailer properly, joggers, shop assistants who talk in code, and the perpetrators of the viciouscoup d'etatthat ousted him as Chairman of the Residents' Association. He will persist in making his daily inspection rounds of the local streets.

But isn't it rare, these days, to find such old-fashioned clarity of belief and deed? Such unswerving conviction about what the world should be, and a lifelong dedication to making it just so?

In the end, you will see, there is something about Ove that is quite irresistible...

The word-of-mouth bestseller causing a sensation across Europe, Fredrik Backman's heartwarming debut is a funny, moving, uplifting tale of love and community that will leave you with a spring in your step - and less ready to judge on first impressions a man you might one day wish to have as your dearest friend.
Fredrik Backmanis a Swedish blogger, columnist and author. His debut novel A MAN CALLED OVE has been a number 1 bestseller across Scandinavia where it has sold over half-a-million copies. Fredrik's second novel, MY GRANDMOTHER SENDS HER REGARDS AND APOLOGISES, also went straight to number 1 in Sweden on publication in 2014.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Brilliant I have read many books in my life but never one like this one. I laugh and I cried. The book is so well written that I was able to live vicariously with the crusty Ove and his cat. I did not want the book to end at all. The stories are nothing less than superb.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredibly Moving I finished this book an hour ago, and immediately went online to buy every other book written by Frederik Backman. A Man Called Ove is a fantastic read; it's powerful, moving, heart wrenching, and it makes you smile and cry on and off throughout the book. I honestly loved every second. I was worried it was too hyped up and would disappoint me, but it really, really did not.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from a must read First let me explain what happened to me while reading this book aloud to my wife as she was preparing dinner. I'm 70; she's almost 70. I'd read the first page, laughed out loud and decided she'd like to hear it read. I read, we laughed and nodded knowingly, then I got to the end of chapter 4 and completely lost it---I couldn't continue through those last few sentences. My wife said I should quit since she knows that I cry at supermarket openings! Now how many books have you read that can cause that kind of a physical and emotional response?! On the other hand, this book is hilarious, insightful, touching and just plain awesome. It seems pretty simple at first but there is more depth to this book than any I've read in forever. As I got near the end, I thought that there really should be a sequel, then the plot changed-----definitely no sequel. But I'm thankful I had the opportunity to read this. You will too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Heartwarming Read This book is wonderful! I finally got around to reading it at the insistence of a friend, and am I ever glad that I listened. Ove is a fascinating character (everyone in the book is actually), and I loved how the story dipped back into the past, but not in a cheesy way. Makes one think twice about "grumpy old people".

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Ove This was an emotional read.
Date published: 2017-08-17
Rated 1 out of 5 by from meh The crankiness of Ave was well overdone and repetitious. The plot was lacking as it repeated the callousness of him to sickening extremes. I would not recommend this book to anyone over the age of 50.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Officially one of my favourite novels Ove is such a unique character. Even though he's grumpy, I now wish he was real AND that there were more people like him. Moreover, the story was sad, but absolutely hilarious. Love how Ove opens up.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from READ THIS BOOK! If I could rate this higher than 5 stars, I would. I don't say this lightly - probably one of the best books I have ever read. It had me laughing out loud and crying in equal parts.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My new contemporary favourite! "He was a man of black and white. And she was color. All the color he had." Holy cow, this book got me. I very rarely give anything 5 stars, but this novel was so lovely. Backman's carefully, lovingly crafted characters were so real, so charming, so heartrending. I quickly fell in love with Ove, a cantankerous, lonely, aging man who, from age 7 to 59, slowly had everything and everyone he had ever loved unjustly torn from him. But because of his pushy neighbours and his own hidden big heart (in more ways than one), and certainly despite himself, he finds love and life in the most unexpected places. I teared up with and for Ove. Beautifully rendered and a joy to read. I have Backman's Beartown sitting in front of me and can't wait to start.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from You'll Laugh, You'll Cry I LOVED this book! Ove is a grumpy old man whom you grow to love by learning about his past and how it's shaped who he is as a result. His interactions with his neighbours will make you laugh and the ending will make you cry. I originally purchased it for my Kobo but I enjoyed it so much that I ended up buying the book just so I could lend it to family and friends. Looking forward to reading more from Fredrik Backman.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Heartwarming Story This book was such a pleasant read. A heartwarming story about a seemingly grumpy and senile old man that is much more than who he seems to be. Prepared your hearts!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Wonderful Book! A warm, funny, serious, and sad book all at once. The book touches on a sensitive issue in an interesting way and makes you realize that before we judge someone, we should take the time to understand and appreciate what they may be struggling to deal with in their personal lives.
Date published: 2017-06-24
Rated 5 out of 5 by from What a fantastic read! Ove had me from the beginning. I couldn't put it down as I absolutely fell in love with Ove and all his neighbours. I highly suggest this book! Made me tear up a couple times.
Date published: 2017-06-24
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Unbelievable approach to sensitive subject matter I enjoyed every moment of this book. The main character (regardless of his best efforts) will worm his way into a special place in your heart and make himself at home there by the last page. A fantastic perspective to such a heartbreaking topic. I cried (from laughter and when my heart was touched) and was reminded of the importance of all of those you love in your life (and those you do not even realise care for you from afar).
Date published: 2017-06-22
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Heartwarming and Laugh-Out-Loud Funny! I absolutely loved this book! It's the heartwarming story of a grumpy old man who, with the help of the people he begrudgingly "befriends" (such as his neighbours), he slowly comes out of his shell. It was a really funny book, I was reading it when I was camping and there were many, many parts where I just burst out laughing. Even though the main character is a super grumpy old man who thinks everyone around him are idiots, you can't help but like him. I would definitely recommend this book!!!
Date published: 2017-06-17
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Read this book Can not recommend this book or this author enough. Who knew the story of a grumpy old man could make one smile, laugh and not me, but certainly others tear up. Really I didn't tear up. Stop looking at me I'm not teary eyed its laughter eyes.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful Read! I loved everything about this book. From the way the story unraveled and all the characters in it. We all know someone like Ove, grumpy, quiet and just wants to be left alone. But he turns out to be the biggest hero in the story.
Date published: 2017-04-18
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Funny. Loved It. Ove is just like the old man living next door. You only see what he wants you to see. He's cold, annoying, not wanting to show that he's simply protecting himself from whatever. Funny, touching and sad. Good read.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Took a bit to get into it, but once you're there... this was a great read. It's a fun read, but also rather thought provoking, and leaves open the door to questioning just how we all interact with one another, how we get to know one another, and maybe how communities could be if we shifted that a bit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fell In Love From Chapter one i was hooked. Best book I've read this year! Ove is a character I think everyone can relate to and will learn to love. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Heartwarming One of the best books I've read this year! You cannot help but love Ove, a curmudgeonly old man (think "get off my lawn" type) with a hidden heart of gold. This book will make you laugh and cry. The premise may not sound like a "wow, I must read this book" type however it is well worth the read. If you don't like this book in the end, you must be made of stone ;)
Date published: 2016-11-17
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Heart warming story! "Death is a strange thing. People live their whole lives as if it does not exist, and yet it's often one of the great motivations for the living. Some of us, in time, become so conscious of it that we live harder, more obstinately, with more fury. Some need its constant presence to even be aware of its antithesis. Others become so preoccupied with it that they go into the waiting room long before it has announced its arrival. We fear it, yet most of us fear more than anything that it may take someone other than ourselves. For the greatest fear of death is always that it will pass us by. And leave us there alone." What a heart warming story! I have to admit, at the start of this book I really disliked this grumpy old man, but loved him by the end. It was so sweet to see him progress throughout the book and to learn and understand why he was the way he was. It really makes you stop and think about what shapes people's personalities and actions.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Heartwarming & intriguing; a pure delight There comes, every once in a while, a book cloaked in simplicity, but chalk-full of charm, that stays with you long after you've read the last page. This is book is one of them. Put simply, it is a rare jewel of a story, full of well-developed characters that you'll come to regard as your best friends, a bittersweet storyline, all wrapped up in a wonderful writing style that is both engaging but easy-to-read. I could barely put it down, and I would challenge anyone to do otherwise.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A favourite of the year Entertaining to read of the everyday life of Swedish neighbours seen through the eyes of a grumpy man, his character stays with me, reminded me you never know someone's story and what goes on behind closed doors and grumpy responses.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Heartwarming How did Ove, a grumpy Swedish man, become dear to my heart in less than three hundred pages. I have to mark it down to the brilliance of debut author Fredrik Backman. When I first started reading this book, I thought the language seemed a bit stilted and unwelcoming, sort of like Ove himself. I put it down to the author writing his native language and then the translator Henning Koch, himself a Swede, putting his own spin on the words. After a few pages I grew used to the writing style and started to fall in love with the book and it's unique character. Ove is a good man, he's worked hard all his life, is true to his adored wife and diligent in meeting his own exacting standards. He never got into the habit of cultivating friends as his wife provided all the company and companionship he ever thought he needed. His new neighbour Parvaneh didn't know this and wasn't about to be told she couldn't be his friend. She didn't set out to totally disrupt Ove's life, but that's what happened with her simple neighbourly requests. I loved watching her little intrusions into his orderly life and plans. All the little nudges and tweaks resulting in cascade of change. I didn't know what to expect when I started this book; I have heard so many good reviews and recommendations though nothing specific. I'm glad I didn't let the awkward beginning scare me away as this was a most rewarding read that I would have been sorry to miss. I really hope that there are lots of Parvaneh's out there knocking on their neighbour's doors.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved this Bood A friend recommended this book, and I'm so glad I bought it. It was funny and sad all at the same time. If you liked "The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry", read this book. The story is about Ove, a curmudgeonly "older" man. He seems to dislike everything, but some new neighbours change his life.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ove - feels like I met you A delightful story of Ove, well written elderly character who I still think of 2 weeks after I finished the novel. A light read of a group of neighbours and the dynamics based in Sweden.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Can find a thing wrong with this book :) I think we've all known a person like Ove, and probably misjudged them :( so hilarious in parts - his failed attempts at suicide - and so sad in others - his love and loneliness after his wife died. Nice to know some of his neighbors looked past his grumpiness and saw the warmth in his soul. Could be a lesson to all of us, don't judge a book by it's cover - no pun intended !!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from fell in love with ove Once in a while, you just have to sit back and enjoy a simple story about love and redemption. If so, this is the book to do so. One cannot help loving Ove, despite every attempt he makes for you not to love him. I found him so human and so real. It was lovely to have spent time with him.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Poignant and hysterically funny in equal measure In my latest reading adventure I traveled to Sweden where I met “A man called Ove“. Ove is a loveable curmudgeon in late middle-age. He is ever so slightly OCD and has a problem with the machinations of society. Ove is very set in his ways and is disdainful of almost everyone he meets. He has a fondness for rules and thinks that anyone who doesn’t follow them is a harbinger of chaos. He has always driven a Saab car and thinks that what car a person drives tells a lot about a person. His story is told in a series of flashbacks which makes the reader cognizant of all the loss and sadness that Ove has encountered in his life along with all the many talents he possesses. In the present, over the course of of several months, Ove, with a little help from his friends, gets a new lease on life. Poignant and hysterically funny in equal measure, “A man called Ove” is a heartwarming novel of life, loss, and our intrinsic need to be needed. Skillfully written with charm and wit, this debut novel is a fast read – and one you will remember for a long time. You know you’ve read a good book when after the last page is turned you are already missing the characters… I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoyed “The storied life of A.J. Fikry” or “The unlikely pilgrimage of Harold Fry“. “A man called Ove” came about as a result of a blog post from Swedish author Fredrik Backman. His readers took to the character and requested more and more. The result was this novel. Like Frederik Backman’s blog readers, this reader believes that the world would be a better place with more people like “A man called Ove“.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ended up loving it I first tried reading A Man Called Ove from Swedish author Fredrik Backman. Ove is the perfect archetype for the word 'curmudgeon'. Everything is Ove's world is black and white, right and wrong. Rules are meant to be followed, signs are meant to be obeyed and Ove will let you know if you don't. I read the first bit and actually felt quite sad. I didn't want to listen to a litany of complaints. (I have to listen to a few people like this at work - why bring it home?) I just thought this wasn't a book for me. But then I started hearing how much everyone loved it - and the library ordered the audio version - so I thought I would give it another go by listening. And am I ever glad I did! The story came alive for me with George Newbern's reading. He captured the mental image I had created for Ove, but also gave him a humanity beyond the grousing. Ove's wife Sonia died four years ago and Ove has now decided that life is not worth living - suicide is on his list of things to do that day. Until a new, noisy family moves in next door. Of course they don't know how to back in a trailer. Ove will show them how to do it right. Suicide goes on the list for tomorrow. But then there's one more thing that Ove needs to oversee - and then another.... I can't believe I almost missed this wonderful tale! Backman is a gifted storyteller - I became completely invested in this little corner of the world, cheering on Ove as he rediscovers life - with a side of grumpy. If you liked The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, you will enjoy A Man Called Ove.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved it! This book surprised me. I thought when I first started reading it that I wouldn't like it and possibly not finish it, but then I was hooked on Ove. There is something about this book that touches your heart. When I was finished I actually missed the characters (especially the cat!) I recommend this book - just sit back and let it fill your heart!!!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Ahhh...the Swedes! After reading the Dragon Tattoo series, the style of Swedish writers has caught my attention. They have a remarkable sense of humour that I am thoroughly enjoying and this novel is no exception. The story follows an old man in a suburban community from his childhood into his current aged state and explains a lot of the events that have given him his dour outlook. It also unveils the innate humanity within us all and how he begins to interact with his neighbours and humans in general once again. A worthwhile read, methinks.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Warm & Quirky A Man called Ove just wants to be left alone to kill himself and he would do so if it weren’t for those idiotic neighbours interfering with his plans. When his constant vigilance isn’t needed to prevent them from breaking the neighbourhood rules, his assistance is needed to prevent one disaster after another. So what’s a grumpy old man to do when death is calling but life just keeps demanding his attention? A Man Called Ove is the debut novel by Swedish author Fredrik Backman and what a funny, sweet tale it is. It is a story of love, loss, grief, loneliness, and the importance of community and it will make you laugh and cry in equal measures. Backman has created in Ove one of the most likable curmudgeons you’ll meet in literature. It is Ove’s outward grump and inward marshmallow that keeps the story from slipping over the line from tragicomedy to schmaltz. He is rigid, opinionated, but, most of all, endearing. A Man Called Ove is a heart-warming tale of the importance of community and how diversity of all types, rather than dividing it, makes it strong. A very high recommendation from me for this warm and quirky novel.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 5 Enthusiastic Stars! A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman (Sweden) 5 Enthusiastic Stars!! You will love Fredrick Backman?s story of Ove, a cranky, miserable, and angry-at-the-world, widower who has recently been made redundant in his job. Forced out of the workforce into retirement, Ove stomps through the now even longer days since his wife?s passing with impatience and disdain. He takes it upon himself to make sure that his housing complex runs properly and in line with the rules. What Ove can?t understand is everyone?s sheer lack of respect for rules. Why is it so hard to read the posted signs? Why does everyone think that they can ignore them? One of his biggest peeves is: ?No motorized vehicles in residential areas!? and he makes it his mission to stop anyone who violates this rule. It?s a funny and poignant story with heart. Ove, while cranky, is lovable and true. His adherence to ?the way things are done? reminded me so much of my own father and had me reminiscing about my dad?s insistence that the only type of car to purchase was GM. In Ove?s case, it?s Saab. His relationships are few and strained at best. Sonja, Ove?s late wife, always knew just how to make him look past the surface of things. But since her death, Ove has had difficulty getting through the day. All he wants is to be reunited with Sonja and to be left in peace while he attempts to accomplish this. After repeated interruptions from new neighbours, old neighbours and a smattering of other annoyances, including a stray cat, Ove begins to slowly open himself up to life once again. This wonderfully written story had me laughing, crying, and reminiscing. I was unable to put it down! It?s going to take North America by storm.
