'THE PERFECT HOLIDAY READ' Evening Standard

'A JOY FROM START TO FINISH' - Gavin Extence, author of THE UNIVERSE VERSUS ALEX WOODS

There is something about Ove.

At first sight, he is almost certainly the grumpiest man you will ever meet. He thinks himself surrounded by idiots - neighbours who can't reverse a trailer properly, joggers, shop assistants who talk in code, and the perpetrators of the vicious coup d'etat that ousted him as Chairman of the Residents' Association. He will persist in making his daily inspection rounds of the local streets.

But isn't it rare, these days, to find such old-fashioned clarity of belief and deed? Such unswerving conviction about what the world should be, and a lifelong dedication to making it just so?

In the end, you will see, there is something about Ove that is quite irresistible...

The word-of-mouth bestseller causing a sensation across Europe, Fredrik Backman's heartwarming debut is a funny, moving, uplifting tale of love and community that will leave you with a spring in your step - and less ready to judge on first impressions a man you might one day wish to have as your dearest friend.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely Wonerful I origninally purchased this book for my Mom as a Christmas present, and never truly intended to read it myself. I ran out of reading material around the beginning of October and so I picked it up. It was absolutely heartwarming. Ove is a character that is much more than what he comes across as. At first, you would think of him as just another grumpy old man, but he grows on you ever the more as the story progresses. I thoroughly enjoyed everything that was this book.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Heartwarming I am so so so glad I read this book!! I remember seeing it everywhere I went last summer, and told myself I wanted to read it but I never got around to it. I finally picked up a copy recently and plowed through it. This book is a work of art. The characters and plot line are so full of life, that I was instantly hooked. There is plenty of humour, but the biggest thing I can say about this book is that it is just full of heart. And it absolutely stole mine. Keep your Kleenex box nearby!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A nice little book Not a rollercoaster of action to be sure, but my kind of comfortable read.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from REALLY not for me I had high hopes for this due to previous novels I have read of Backman but this really did not live up to them. I found it extremely slow and repetitive. I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop and understand the hype surrounding this novel but unfortunately I never got it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved it! What a great book! Heartwarming and humorous. I highly recommend it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My kind of book!!! I loved, loved Ove. He made me laugh, he made me cry, he is so real and human, very rare to find in almost any novel. I don't know if the younger generation would have the patience to dwell into the soul of a lonely man, but for me, he was real, and I understand him so very well. Perhaps the young would learn some valuable lessons from Ove and his life.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not for me I understand why people like/love this book. I got this as a gift from a friend, but unfortunately, this isn't a book for me and one that I DNFed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So happy I picked this up I rarely have time to read anymore, so when I friend recommended this book I decided I needed to find the time. That decision was one of the best I made this summer, my time was not wasted. This is an excellent book. Everyone knows someone like Ove, maybe Ove is you. Pick up this book and find out. You'll laugh as much as you cry!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I recommend this to everyone! After reading Beartown I was extremely excited to give this book a go. Well, I must say, this was also a 5 star read for me. I loved how the book switched between the current life of Ove and his neighbours to the past to give the back story of how Ove came to be the way he is. This book was so heartwarming and there were parts where I did laugh out loud. Tissue is also good to have handy for this one. I was very sad when this book ended.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not for me A coworker suggested I read this book because it is one of her favorites. I could only make it to 100 pages. I found this book extremely boring, just couldn't get into it. Didn't see the appeal of reading about a man going about his day to day life.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic!! This story is filled with love, laughter, and maybe a bit of introspection! Such a lovely story of the grumpy old man Ove. Made it to my top 10 books! #plumreview
Date published: 2018-06-28
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Read this book! Despite his extreme grumpiness, Ove is such a likable character. The book consists of a motley cast of characters that you find yourself routing for. Couldn't put this book down and was sad when I'd finished it (not because of the ending but because it was over).
Date published: 2018-06-25
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Heart Warming1 This novel made me think, cry, and laugh out loud. It was so heart worming and delightful!

Date published: 2018-06-07
Rated 5 out of 5 by from I loved this crochety old man I wasn't sure when I started this book if I was going to like it. Ove is a crotchety old man who complains about everything that is a change in his life. But as time went on, the people and situations he complains about become something that brings him out of his shell and into the love of his neighbours. I recognized some of his complaints in myself, so I have to try to catch myself in a "Ove moment" and stop.
Date published: 2018-05-28
Rated 4 out of 5 by from lovely such a unique tale about how love and friendship can come where and when you least expect
Date published: 2018-05-25
Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Sweet Story This was such a sweet story. It's the fastest I've ever read a book. I could relate to the grumpiness of the character and just loved how the story intertwined the main character's past and present life and how his journey to becoming who he was in the end.
Date published: 2018-05-25
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Wasn't sure what to think Before I started reading this I had convinced myself that it was going to be dull...dull it was NOT! It was such an adorable story about a grumpy old man who slowly lets the people around him into his life (whether he wants to or not). I laughed out loud, I smiled and overall, I really enjoyed this book
Date published: 2018-05-24

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not impressed This book was recommended to me. Was a very slow start and didn't really get too much better. Although there were some funny part the story dragged.
Date published: 2018-04-07
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Sweet Message A sweet story about a man called Ove - a reminder to be kind as you may be unaware of others struggles. A bit slow to start but overall a nice heart warming story.
Date published: 2018-03-05
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Heartwarming Read The story starts off slow and was a bit hard to get into. You start by following the day to day life of Ove, I wasn't sure what the actual story was. Once you get a couple of chapters in, it's an engaging book with likeable characters, and a range of different characters. We see Ove in present day, and we get to see Ove in the past; learning about experiences and situations that shaped him. We also get to see how the characters in the present day shape and change Ove.
Date published: 2018-02-11
Rated 5 out of 5 by from I Loved Loved this story so much!! A Man Called Ove is one of those books that really grab your heart and soul, maybe because we all kinda know someone like Ove. It's a very touching story, and as someone who has worked many years in retail, the story in the first chapter called "A Man Called Ove Buys A Computer That Is Not A Computer" made me smile and chuckled to myself, because i've had many customers like Ove. As annoying as Ove is, he is a very likeable character once you get to know his heart.
Date published: 2018-02-05
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Heartwarming!!! Love!!!! This book A Man Called Ove was chosen for my book club. I Absolutely ADORED it! Ove being forced to learn to step out of his comfort zone after losing his wife was funny, yet sad and oh so heartwarming!! A MUST READ!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Glimpse Into a Microcosm Loved the structure/constraint of the townhouse complex and the intermingling of lives for the better. It really touched on the idea of the importance of community and knowing our neighbours and helping with their struggles. I loved following along through the good and the heartache. Intrigued to see the movie version.
Date published: 2018-01-29
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved this book I think most of us have someone in our life who Ove reminds us of. An old curmudgeon with a soft heart.
Date published: 2018-01-27
Rated 2 out of 5 by from not for me This book really dragged for me, I didn't get what all the fuss was about. I kept encountering moments that seemed like they were supposed to be funny, but to me they just weren't.
Date published: 2018-01-24
Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of my favourite This book got me laughing and crying. Absolutely heartwarming I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves to read. This story makes you appreciate life.
Date published: 2018-01-24
Rated 1 out of 5 by from clearly i was not the target audience I was unable to make it through this story with its paper thin plot about a "manic pixie dream family" (i'll expand the trope to include this family) saving a man from the depression arising from a personal loss.while the story allows for an important conversation regarding how we treat our senior citizens, the book just feels like cheap emotional manipulation.
Date published: 2018-01-15
Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of the best in a long time This was one of the best books I've read in a while, it was powerful and provocative but I still cried and laughed throughout. The beginning is a little slow, but don't give up! It's totally worth a read. Highly recommend!!
Date published: 2018-01-05
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Worth powering through! I've got to be honest, this book took me several tries to get through. I hated Ove at the beginning, and couldn't push through hearing how mean he was! But a friend told me to keep powering through, and I'm glad she did; throughout this book you discover the layers that can build up a person to make them who they are, through the wear and tear of life. It's a beautiful story and is truly worth all of the hype it gets!
Date published: 2018-01-02
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ove is my husband I loved this book and grumpy old Ove. So much of his personality reminds me of my husband. Highly recommend.
Date published: 2018-01-01
Rated 5 out of 5 by from MUST READ I LOVED this book. I tend to read thrillers and books with unpredictable twists. But Ove captured my heart and I couldn't put this down. Funny and heartwarming, I cried tears of happiness and joy. Very rare for a book to make me shed tears. HIGHLY RECOMMEND and will be reading the rest of Backman's novels.

Date published: 2017-11-14
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tugs at your heart strings When I started reading the book, I didn't know if I was going to finish it. I felt so, so bad for Ove and couldn't image reading an entire book about his struggle (I don't want to give anything away). But the more I read and learned about the characters that came into his life, the more I wanted to read. I'm so glad it didn't end the way I thought it was going to when I started the book. Ove will make you laugh and he will make you cry. Enjoy all of it!
Date published: 2017-11-13

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful story! I absolutely loved this book. Quick chapters make it easy to read. Ove's character is incredibly endearing. I loved how little bits of his past are revealed over time and make sense of why he is the way he is. I felt so attached to him during the story. I laughed out loud and cried while reading this. This is the kind of book that sticks with you!
Date published: 2017-11-04
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Groan Well I finished it. Didn't really enjoy it. The characters are far from lovable although Ove's neighbour really did look out for him even though she was obnoxious and intrusive. But I can see why people like this book. Just not for me. I lent it to a coworker and she seems to like it
Date published: 2017-10-31
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Halfway Through! I'm halfway through this book and so far I'm really enjoying it. I like seeing Ove's hard exterior break down. Can't wait to see how the rest of the book will turn out!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An entertaining read I loved this book so much. To me, it was written in a very unique way and it worked. As sad as some of the story was, it was also uplifting and humorous too. I watched the movie afterwards to see how they acted everything out, but the book was 10x better. The level of descriptiveness you get from the book is so captivating. I personally did not want to put this book down. I highly recommend this book

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Brilliant I have read many books in my life but never one like this one. I laugh and I cried. The book is so well written that I was able to live vicariously with the crusty Ove and his cat. I did not want the book to end at all. The stories are nothing less than superb.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredibly Moving I finished this book an hour ago, and immediately went online to buy every other book written by Frederik Backman. A Man Called Ove is a fantastic read; it's powerful, moving, heart wrenching, and it makes you smile and cry on and off throughout the book. I honestly loved every second. I was worried it was too hyped up and would disappoint me, but it really, really did not.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from a must read First let me explain what happened to me while reading this book aloud to my wife as she was preparing dinner. I'm 70; she's almost 70. I'd read the first page, laughed out loud and decided she'd like to hear it read. I read, we laughed and nodded knowingly, then I got to the end of chapter 4 and completely lost it---I couldn't continue through those last few sentences. My wife said I should quit since she knows that I cry at supermarket openings! Now how many books have you read that can cause that kind of a physical and emotional response?! On the other hand, this book is hilarious, insightful, touching and just plain awesome. It seems pretty simple at first but there is more depth to this book than any I've read in forever. As I got near the end, I thought that there really should be a sequel, then the plot changed-----definitely no sequel. But I'm thankful I had the opportunity to read this. You will too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Heartwarming Read This book is wonderful! I finally got around to reading it at the insistence of a friend, and am I ever glad that I listened. Ove is a fascinating character (everyone in the book is actually), and I loved how the story dipped back into the past, but not in a cheesy way. Makes one think twice about "grumpy old people".

Rated 1 out of 5 by from meh The crankiness of Ave was well overdone and repetitious. The plot was lacking as it repeated the callousness of him to sickening extremes. I would not recommend this book to anyone over the age of 50.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Officially one of my favourite novels Ove is such a unique character. Even though he's grumpy, I now wish he was real AND that there were more people like him. Moreover, the story was sad, but absolutely hilarious. Love how Ove opens up.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My new contemporary favourite! "He was a man of black and white. And she was color. All the color he had." Holy cow, this book got me. I very rarely give anything 5 stars, but this novel was so lovely. Backman's carefully, lovingly crafted characters were so real, so charming, so heartrending. I quickly fell in love with Ove, a cantankerous, lonely, aging man who, from age 7 to 59, slowly had everything and everyone he had ever loved unjustly torn from him. But because of his pushy neighbours and his own hidden big heart (in more ways than one), and certainly despite himself, he finds love and life in the most unexpected places. I teared up with and for Ove. Beautifully rendered and a joy to read. I have Backman's Beartown sitting in front of me and can't wait to start.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from You'll Laugh, You'll Cry I LOVED this book! Ove is a grumpy old man whom you grow to love by learning about his past and how it's shaped who he is as a result. His interactions with his neighbours will make you laugh and the ending will make you cry. I originally purchased it for my Kobo but I enjoyed it so much that I ended up buying the book just so I could lend it to family and friends. Looking forward to reading more from Fredrik Backman.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Heartwarming Story This book was such a pleasant read. A heartwarming story about a seemingly grumpy and senile old man that is much more than who he seems to be. Prepared your hearts!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Wonderful Book! A warm, funny, serious, and sad book all at once. The book touches on a sensitive issue in an interesting way and makes you realize that before we judge someone, we should take the time to understand and appreciate what they may be struggling to deal with in their personal lives.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from What a fantastic read! Ove had me from the beginning. I couldn't put it down as I absolutely fell in love with Ove and all his neighbours. I highly suggest this book! Made me tear up a couple times.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Unbelievable approach to sensitive subject matter I enjoyed every moment of this book. The main character (regardless of his best efforts) will worm his way into a special place in your heart and make himself at home there by the last page. A fantastic perspective to such a heartbreaking topic. I cried (from laughter and when my heart was touched) and was reminded of the importance of all of those you love in your life (and those you do not even realise care for you from afar).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Heartwarming and Laugh-Out-Loud Funny! I absolutely loved this book! It's the heartwarming story of a grumpy old man who, with the help of the people he begrudgingly "befriends" (such as his neighbours), he slowly comes out of his shell. It was a really funny book, I was reading it when I was camping and there were many, many parts where I just burst out laughing. Even though the main character is a super grumpy old man who thinks everyone around him are idiots, you can't help but like him. I would definitely recommend this book!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Read this book Can not recommend this book or this author enough. Who knew the story of a grumpy old man could make one smile, laugh and not me, but certainly others tear up. Really I didn't tear up. Stop looking at me I'm not teary eyed its laughter eyes.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful Read! I loved everything about this book. From the way the story unraveled and all the characters in it. We all know someone like Ove, grumpy, quiet and just wants to be left alone. But he turns out to be the biggest hero in the story.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Funny. Loved It. Ove is just like the old man living next door. You only see what he wants you to see. He's cold, annoying, not wanting to show that he's simply protecting himself from whatever. Funny, touching and sad. Good read.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wow, so incredible This is my new favourite book. I read it cover to cover in one weekend. A grumpy old man is not a new story, but the way this is told really touches you. I actually saw the movie first, learned it was based on a book, and then ordered the book. I was still drawn in so easily. The world indeed needs more Ove!
