about

David Rotenberg’s Decker Roberts is back, and he always knows when who’s telling the truth.

Decker Roberts is back, and he always knows when you’re telling the truth.

David Rotenberg first introduced Decker Roberts and his unique gifts in the critically acclaimed thriller The Placebo Effect. Since Decker’s last run-in with the NSA, he’s been trying to remain off the radar, searching for his estranged son, Seth. Decker’s synaesthetic abilities, once a lucrative gift, are increasingly becoming a liability.

When a vicious attack wipes out the best and brightest of America’s young minds, devastating the country’s future, Decker is forced to step out of the shadows and help track down the killer. And as the hunt brings him in contact with other people of “his kind,” Decker begins to realize that there may be depths to his gifts that he had never even imagined.

Meanwhile, several parties are secretly tracking the progress of Decker’s son, trying to determine if Seth has the same powerful gift as his father. Decker is determined to go to any lengths to find his son, but along the way he will have to face down enemies, both old and new, as well as struggle with whether Seth even wants to be found. David Rotenberg’s thrilling sequel to The Placebo Effect is full of suspense and will challenge what you think you know about people who have special “gifts.” From rural Africa to downtown Toronto, the paths of Rotenberg’s colourful characters intertwine as they move toward a conclusion that none of them can see coming.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Murder of Crows Rotenberg definitely takes a suspenseful approach to making his readers think outside the box. I found Rotenberg’s descriptions to give a rather dark feeling and visual to the world at hand. You always feel like the worst is just around the corner. The way that the chapter titles count down to the end, and then show the after, adds a sense of urgency to the already forward moving novel. The characters are unique and intriguingingly developed, however, I found them difficult to identify with. This makes it difficult to fully immerse oneself in the story at hand. It is also impossible to understand them if you haven’t read the first novel in the series. Overall? I really appreciated that this was a book written for adults by an adult. Rotenberg never dumbs down his writing nor does he take a lighter approach to events to increase his possible audience base.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Another Winner David Rotenberg's second Junction book is a great read. It picks up the story of Decker Roberts, acting teacher, synesthete and, well, general know-it-all. An engaging character pushed to the limit by operatives of the US NSA and by his own demons. A Murder of Crows extends far beyond the limits of Toronto's Junction neighborhood, but that's where its rooted--a great mixture of local knowledge for those of us who know the area, and a broad sweep for those who enjoy a fast-paced smart thriller. Conspiracies both small and large plunge Decker into the investigation of a bombing at a US university while his family life continues to unravel with the disappearance of his son. But finding him may lead Decker into bigger trouble. I'll be looking forward to number three in the series.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from What a series of books so far! I am always fascinated by characters and real life people with incredible gifts/ intelligence. This series of books, Book one: The Placebo Effect which I had the pleasure of reading recently and now A Murder of Crows, the second novel in the "Junction Chronicles" has shown me what an intelligent/ gifted author David Rotenberg is and the same goes for his main character Decker Roberts. This book continues on the fast paced thrill ride that is the life of Decker. David Rotenberg's use of imagery is done so masterfully. Amazing detail is attached to each character that Decker's life intersects with. Pick up a copy you won't be disappointed!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent follow up to "Placebo Effect" The Junction Chronicles Once again Mr. Rotenberg has given us a fast paced psychological thriller that picks up nicely where "Placebo Effect" left off. Using a taut thriller/mystery/chase vehicle he Delves into our relationship with the "truth" and our notion of family. A wonderful addition to his collection of Zhong Fong crime novels set in China, and his excellent historical epic "Shanghai".
